Hello Everyone,
Well, if you remember, the last newsletter, I mention, I know it will, the question is when will it warm up. The
next newsletter, remind me of this. I said. Well today as Im writing this newsletter, its 99 at 6:30 pm. That
being said, I know youre wondering whats happened to our greens? The answer is winterkill. When we had a
sub 10 weather, thats when we lost grass. Plus the ice storm we had in February. Then to make matters worse,
we have sting nematodes on about 4 of our greens that I know of and really probably more than that. What have
we done to correct the problem?
core aerated the greens
top dressed one load on greens topdressing material
fertilized greens w/18-6-15greens fertilizer
top dressed again
we sprayed the greens with Abamectin 1.9% for sting nematodes at rate of 87 oz. per acre
Thats just to start.
We will be fertilizing again on the greens in about the last of June.
Also when able, we will begin being more aggressive with out fairway spraying, fertilizing.
Getting back to the sting nematodes. You may ask What are they? Nematodes are microscopic worms. A hand
full of soil conations thousand and thousand of these creatures. Some nematodes are beneficial. They feed on
bacteria, fungi, organic matter etc.. Sting nematodes they have what you call stylets or stingers if you will.
They feed by inserting their stingers into the roots, sucking the contents of the roots.
That, along with the severe cold in February, is what happened.
Well I hope you understand a little better about what we have been up against. Looking forward for a good summer, and a good year.
Thank you for your continuous support.
Scott, Alvis, and staff!!!
