Pat and Don Schelling

Coming to Arizona was the best thing that ever happened to us.

from Washington State University. Don is a retired business owner and presently sells real estate exclusively in Festival. Pat is a retired commercial interior design professional. Between the two of them, they have five grown children and eight grandchildren. Two years ago, Don started playing Pickleball and quickly fell in love with the game and the people. He is presently the President of the Pickleball Club and has been since 2011. He also is a member of the Barrel Buddies Club and feels that it is important to be a good community steward so has taken on an Adopt-AHighway mile on Sun Valley Parkway. Pat is more sedate due to illness from RA (rheumatoid arthritis) but hopes to be able to get out more and enjoy life. She is also a member of Barrel Buddies. Life is sweet!

Don and Pat moved to Arizona in 2008 from Spokane, Washington. After enduring one too many freezing winters in the northwest, they decided to try something different. They wanted something that was a little out of the way and not in a large city where you dont get to know your neighbors. Sun City Festival is a perfect fit. Both grew up in small communities, so it was natural that they fell in love with our desert community. Don was originally from a very small town in central California and attended the University of Nevada in Reno. Pat was born and raised in Spokane and graduated

Lower Your Risk for Dementia

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness & Wellness Director

the brain. Many types of dementia exist and any of them can strike anyone. People with dementia lose their ability to solve problems and control emotions. Other symptoms of dementia include personality changes, memory loss and impaired intellectual functions. More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimers, the most common type of dementia. Different types of dementia affect different parts of the brain. Some include loss of circulation or damage to nerve cells. Increasing amounts of research reveal the potential for lowering the risk of dementia. Activities that challenge the brain such as crossword puzzles, chess playing, and reading can help build reserves of brain cells and connections of brain cells. These reserves can slow a mental decline. Recent research reveals this may be less significant than previously believed. However, mental stimulation and stress relief from these activities are still helpful to keep the mind sharp. Learning to play a musical instrument can also boost brain power. Research from the University of Kansas showed those who played a musical instrument did better on tests of mental abilities. This also held true for people who had played an instrument but stopped years prior. Having learned how to play an instrument early in life may provide lifelong brain benefits. The Mayo Clinic has published research indicating physical activity can reduce the risk for dementia. Any activity raising the heart and breathing rate provides a benefit. Cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking or cycling should be done most days of the week for thirty minutes or more each time. Social activity has also been shown to provide a brain boost. Spending time with friends and participating in activities with other people stimulate the brain and lower risks for dementia. Additionally, risk factors for developing any type of dementia include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, elevated cholesterol levels and diabetes. Activities to reduce stress, provide brain stimulation and improve physical fitness are all things that reduce the risk of developing dementia and limit mental decline.
5 Ways to Cut Your Risk for Dementia, Linda Warner Andrews.

Dementia is a term for a group of symptoms caused by disorders which affect
