Eurocode 3 : Design Of Steel

Structure

Definition of Eurocode 3 Design of steel structure is a set of important

technical rules developed by the European Committee for Standardisation for the
structural design of construction work in the Europian Union. It involve the design
in one country followed by erection in another country. It is standard Building
rules for whole Euro-Market. Eurocode 3 Harmonized core material for local
handbooks , design aids and educational material.
The history of Eurocode 3 started in 1975 where the Commission of the European
Community decided on an action programme in the field of construction, based
on article 95 of the treaty. The program objective is to eliminate technical
obstacles to trade and the harmonization of technical specification. Through the
program the commission took an initiative to establish a set of harmonized
technical rules for the design of construction works which, in a first stage 1,
would serve as an alternative to the national rules in force in the Member States.

European Commission Community

For 15 years there communities with the help of Steering Committee with
Representative of Member States, conducted the development of the Eurocodes
Programme and finally led to the first generation of European codes in the 1980s.
In 1989 the structural Eurocode programme comprises the following standards
generally consisting of a number parts :
EN 1990 : Eurocode

: Basis of structural design

EN 1991 : Eurocode 1 : Action of structures

EN 1992 : Eurocode 2 : Design of concrete structures
EN 1993 : Eurocode 3 : Design of steel structures
EN 1994 : Eurocode 4 : Design of composite steel and concrete structures
EN 1995 : Eurocode 5 : Design of timber structures
EN 1996 : Eurocode 6 : Design of masonry structures
EN 1997

: Eurocode 7 : Geotechnical design

EN 1998 : Eurocode 8 : Design of structures for earthquake resistance

Eurocodes is important in designing of steel structures construction according

to its rules B.S :
BS
General.
EN1993 Common rules

This part contains rules for section classification,

sectional resistance, axial and flexural buckling,

-1-1

and rules for

buildings

amongst others.

BS
Plated structural
EN1993
elements
-1-5

When plate buckling has a significant effect the

supplementary rules in part 1-5 will be used. This
part includes rules for the design of stiffened
plates, stiffeners, shear buckling etc.

BS
EN1993 Design of joints
-1-8

This part contains provisions for determining the

resistance of bolted, welded and riveted
connections.

BS
EN1993 Fatigue
-1-9

The fatigue part of Eurocode 3 replaces BS5400-10

for determining the fatigue resistance of structural
details.

This part contains design requirements for the

Material
BS
selection of steel for fracture toughness and for
toughness and
EN1993
through thickness properties of welded elements
through thickness
-1-10
where there is a significant risk of lamellar tearing
properties
during fabrication.
Design of
BS
structures with
EN1993
tension
-1-11
components

Part 1-11 contains design rules for tension

components, including tensioned bars and cables
that by the nature of their connection to the
structure are adjustable.

BS
EN1993 Steel bridges
-2

The steel bridges part supplements and modifies

the provisions in the general rules. Partial factors
for use with steel bridges are contained in this
part, as well as bridges-specific rules.

BS
EN1993 Piling
-5

This part contains specific rules relating to the

design of steel piles.

Eurocode 3 Design of steel Structures

It contain the general rules for building which is rules for section classification ,
sectional resistance ,axial and flexural buckling, amongst other.
Eurocode 3 Design in steel structure bring a lot of benefit in this modern
construction , it improve the General, Basis of design , Materials , Durability ,
Structural Analysis , Ultimate limit states , Serviceability limit states of structural
design.
In eurocode the terms and difiniton also bring a lot of benefit in designing steel
structure :
Example :
A =cross-sectional area of a pipe
C =curvature due to bending
De =external diameter
D = diameter of the mid-line of pipe wal1
E =modulus of elasticity
F =normal force in the pipe in longitudinal direction
M =bending moment in the pipeline conceived as a beam
Mp =plastic moment
Ml =torsional moment
N =effective normal force in a pipeline
V = shear force in the cross-section

Scope of Eurocode 3 Design of steel structure

EN 1993-1-1 give basic design rules for steel structures with material thickness t
more than 3mm. It also give supplementary provision for the structural design of
steel building.
Example subject dealt with in EN 1993-1-1
Section 1 : General
Section 2 : Basis of design
Section 3 : Materials
Section 4 : Durability
Section 5 :Structural analysis
Section 6 : Ultimate limit stress
Section 7 : serviceability limit stress
Section 1 to 2 provide additional clauses to those given in EN 1990 Basis of
structural design. While Section 3 deals with material properties of products
made of low alloy structural steels. Section 4 gives general rules for durability.
Then section 5 refers to the structural analysis of structure in which the
members can be modelled with sufficient accuracy as line elements for global
analysis. After that , section 6 gives detailed rules for the design of cross section
and members. Section 7 give rules for serviceability.

Conclusion
As for conclusion Eurocode 3 Design of Steel Structures involve the importance
for designing steel structure base on the guideline of Eurocode 3 standard terms
and definitions such as basic of structural design , materials , durability ,
structural analysis , Ultimate limit states , serviceability limit states.
The introduction of the Eurocodes in the design practice needs great care.
Design examples, guide lines, design tools (special software) should be
developed in the various countries. Explanations of differences and the
justification for these changes should be supplied to support the acceptation of
the Eurocodes.
