OBJECTIVE
To determine the particle size distribution of a soil sample by a sieve process. This analysis
can be used to predict ground water moment and soil classification.
THEORY
Particles size distribution analysis is used in engineering soil classification universally. This is
because the particle size plays an important role in the selection of soil in cons
APPARATUS
3) Sieve brushes
1) Finely crush soil sample in a mortar using plastic pestle until all particles areseperated.
2) The mass of all sieve and lock atreadable 0.1g accuracy was weighed. The sieves
according to the size together was installed with the receiver and cover.
3) The mass of 250g soil sample readable at 0.1g accuracy was weighed and the sieves the
soil using using the british standard sieves and mechanical sieves shaker for 5 minutes.
4) The mass of each sieve and its content at accuracy to 0.1g was weighed. The total up
all soil mass that is left on the sieve and receiver. Compare the mass of soil with the
used soil mass which is 200g. If the difference is greater than 1.0g repeat the
experiment.
5) Keep the sieves soil of #36 (all the soil under sieves #36) for the purpose of experiment
