Remembering his infectious smile and big heart,

the CFR Chemicals Bison teammates are mourning
Markus Lavallee who unexpectedly, along with his
grandmother, was taken from his family and his team
following a car accident last weekend.
The 16-year-old joined the Bisons last year and
quickly became known for his positive outlook and
willingness to lend a hand.
His passing devastated those around him that are
now left to cope with the loss.
Markus is the kind of guy that you love to be
around, said Bisons General Manager Wayne Hansen. He was so happy, he was always encouraging.
No matter how bad things were going for you, if you
saw Markus you had to have a smile on your face.
Born and raised in Chestermere, until he moved to
Strathmore a year ago, the AAA midget player had
a passion for sports. Competing in track and field,
soccer, basketball, lacrosse and working out, the teen
was always eager to improve. However, his friends
remember him as the first one to crack a joke and
breaking down some dance moves.
Hed goof around with you and make you feel better about your day whether it was going good or
not, said Bison teammate said Josh Bishop.
Lavallee, who also played for the Wheatland Warriors from 2011-2012, left an impression with his former double-A bantam coach Paden Grant.
Acknowledging the players selfless play and need
to put his teammates first, Grant said it was his pleasure to have coached the young athlete.
You hear a lot of stuff other people say about him,
and its all true, said Grant. He was all smiles, he
was pleasant to be around, and his teammates loved
him. Every time Id see him hed come up and wed
chat and catch up. That doesnt always happen with a
player after youre done with him. He was a pleasant
player and a pleasant person.
His considerate personality also didnt go unnoticed with Bisons Captain Shane Fraser, who said he
relied on Lavallee when in need of a goal. According
to Fraser, Lavallee was a behind-the-scenes type of
guy who went out on the ice to do his job.
Shortly after 3 p.m. on July 11, Lavallee and his
63-year-old grandmother Kathleen Lavallee, were
struck by a cement truck at the intersection of Hwy
901 and Hwy 817.
Markus and Kathleen Lavallees funeral will take
place at the Centre Street Church in Calgary at 1:30
p.m. on July 17.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers at the service or at any Credit Union using the name In Trust
for Markus Lavallee.

Catch a break on a downtown patio

The beginning of summer saw two patios placed in the
downtown area. They were an initiative of the Downtown Design Review Committee (DDRC), who will soon be adding two
more patios.
The DDRC is a volunteer-based town committee with the
aim of improving and revitalizing the Downtown Strathmore
area. The patios, which were unveiled last year, were one of
their design initiatives to give people somewhere to sit in the
area while enjoying the sunshine.
It is a nice place to sit and have a coffee with your friends,
says Chuck Proctor who works for the town and sits of the
committee. It is a nice place to come visit in the summer and
we are trying to attract people to our downtown and to get
people down here.
Each of the patios has a picnic table, umbrella, planter, garbage bin and red, outdoor furniture in an effort to bring more
people into the area.
Starting this year Proctor sent out letters to shops in the
downtown area asking if they would like to host one of the
patios outside their stores for the summer. Rockys Bakery,
Aztec Realty, Co-op and Chinook Financial showed interest in
the initiative.
The first two patios went up outside of Rockys Bakery and
the Co-op on the street level, and the next two, will be slightly
bigger.

One of them will sit on the astro-turf outside the Aztec Realty building, and a 20ft by 14ft patio will be placed in the
empty lot between the Chinook Financial and Joyland Theater.
Despite the first two patios taking up parking space, Proctor
says they have had good feedback and that they have been
well used, especially during the recent downtown festival.
They have been really busy, said Ellie Blokland, of Rockys
Bakery. We have had a lot of new people coming into the
bakery and they like to go out and sit out on the patios, so it
has been very good since they put it up.
The committee will be offering the downtown stores the opportunity to host one of the patios again next summer.
Carseland Firefighter safety

Concern about the building site for
the new Carseland Hall brought resident
Kurt Emde to Wheatland Council on July
7, with a suggestion for an alternative
building site.
Relying on his past 16 years of firefighting experience, he dedicated personal time to gather information that
might effect the safety of volunteers responding to the hall.
Given the stressors, factors of something happening to volunteers responding to the hall are high, said Emde.
He outlined the proximity to Hwy 24
and the high traffic flow of approximately 1,700 vehicles and 450 semi trucks
utilizing the road daily, as potentials for
delay or accident.
Railway crossings were included as a
hazard; whether the train was blocking
the crew from getting to the hall, a train
carrying hazardous cargo, or any derailment that would cause an emergency
situation where crews could not reach
the hall. He said hazards with anhydrous
ammonia were a possibility as there
were businesses processing the chemical
in the area. The off-gas is undetectable
and with prevailing winds, the plume,
may cut volunteers off from hall access.

He said the adrenaline rush associated

with getting to a call often heightens the
potential for accidents. He clarified volunteers need to learn to control internal
stressors, but planning ahead for uncontrolled hazards can improve safety.
Emde furthermore presented suggestions for alternative response routes and
an alternative site location that would reduce safety hazards.
Fire and Emergency Services Manager Judy Unsworth said that one third
of the volunteer firefighters live outside
of Carseland and part of their contract
stipulates a commitment to respond to
all calls. She presented a map plotting
the calls responded to by the Carseland
hall for 2013/2014. She said it could be
used as a reference in decision making
processes.
The new hall hopes to include two
drive-through bays, an attractive exterior and have room to provide intensive
training facilities for the fire crews. The
site will need room for a 120 by 120 foot
building and 2-5 acre training/parking
area. It was noted that a hall close to
residents often received complaints due
to siren use.
Council discussed the presented information and gave alternative viewpoints
on the information presented. It was
pointed out Emdes suggested site, situ-
ated north east of Carseland, had a water

course nearby that could have environmental impact issues.
Its a catch-22 situation, said Councillor Ben Armstrong. Conditions can be
dangerous no matter where it goes.
CAO Alan Parkin objected to the presentation, as he felt it did not represent
the views of the community, firefighters
or the fire association.
This is just the opinion of those here
today, said Parkin. The fire chief, fire
crews and association didnt have a
problem with existing plans.

Q: What is Cremation?
A: Cremation is the process of subjecting dead
human remains to direct flame and reducing

them to a powder-like substance that can be
buried or scattered. A crematorium reaches
temperatures of around 1600 C. This process
takes roughly 6 hours, depending on several
factors. All that remains after the cremation
is bone fragments and ash that is reduced
to a finer powder to be placed in an urn and
returned to the family or scattered. A stamped
medallion is often placed with a body to ensure
proper identification, along with many other
systems in place to ensure the identification
of the cremated remains is never in question.
The cremated remains are entirely sterile and
completely safe to handle. Because cremation
is irreversible, unlike burials, more paperwork
is required, including permission from a
Medical Examiner, before a crematorium may
proceed with any cremation.

15-15 Fees Bylaw Amendment Bylaw.
Council awarded the Civic Centre door replacement project to

Starcraft Construction Ltd. with costs not to exceed $41,123.00
plus GST, with funds to be drawn from the Financial Stabilization
Reserve.
Council approved the replacement of the Marathon Motor for the
lap pool circulation pump at the cost of $10,407.95 plus GST with
funds to be drawn from the Financial Stabilization Reserve.
SPEED LIMIT CHANGE NOTICE
Please note that the speed limit along Brent Blvd. from Wheatland Trail
(HWY 817) and George Freeman Trail will be reduced to 30 KM/Hour all
day from July 16 - 19, 2015. Signage will be posted along Brent Blvd.

Fildebrandt on the job

Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt sat down for a face-to-face
chat with Wheatland County councillors, at the July 7 council meeting, for
his first official visit. Fildebrands efforts
are already gaining momentum.
There has been quite a bit to take
in as I am new to this, Fildebrandt
said. Although I am not from here, I
am humbled by the support and help
people have given me. I have been given this chance and I wont take it for
granted.
Fildebrandt informed council about
his open door policy and looked forward to meeting with council last week.
He also plans to have town hall meetings in the local communities, to listen
to his constituents ideas, concerns, and
the issues they face. He has been actively looking to relocate to the Strathmore area, and hopes to find a suitable
acreage. He believes people need direct
access in their government representation and he has set up offices in Brooks
and Strathmore. Fildebrandt said that
he has some good contacts within the
NDP government and is committed to
working with them, keeping the best
interests of his constituents in mind. He
said he is working with the health minister on the Strathmore Hospital issues.
It is about working constructively
together, these are not partisan issues,
said Fildebrandt.
However, he said there are times
when MLAs must make a stand. When
discussing the Calgary Municipal Plan,
he said the Wildrose Party is supportive
of local autonomy. He said there is a
trend to larger centres annexing more
of the rural land and services.
The Wildrose Party is the greatest
defender of local acceptance and autonomy, said Fildebrandt. I want to
champion local issues and make sure
people can come to me with their concerns.
He did suggest the county form

He added big cities seem to have no
problem getting attention on issues,
but he committed to represent rural interests. He said it is too early to determine what stance the NDP will take on
some issues, but had concerns on the
NDP focus.
We are operating on the 2014 budget and they just allocated $18 billion
from the interim supply to conduct
business until a budget is passed, said
Fildebrandt. It is disturbing to me. It is
impossible to see how they are spending money.
He said they may be able to pass a
budget by October 2015.
Fildebrandt has been appointed the
shadow Minister of Finance and the
committee is currently working on audits of the former PC government finances.

listed on the Wildrose Alliance party

Strathmore RCMP are looking for

information regarding a motor vehicle
collision which occurred between a Grey
Dodge Ram truck and a Gravel Trailer Truck
at Highway 1 and Lakeside Boulevard. The
Gravel Trailer truck suddenly stopped in
front of the Dodge Ram causing the vehicle
to collide with the rear end of the Gravel
Truck. Significant damage was done to the
small Dodge Ram and the damage done,
if any, to the gravel truck is unknown. The
complainant was unable to describe the
truck colour or markings and was also
unable to get plate information as the
gravel truck continued West Bound down
Highway 1. If you have any information on
gravel trucks that may have damage to the
rear end with possible grey paint transfer
please call the Strathmore RMCP.
If you get a tick on you or your pet, remove it

as soon as possible. Use fine-tipped tweezers and
grasp the head-end of the tick as close to the skin
as possible and pull up with a steady, even pressure
without twisting. After the tick is removed, wash
the area with soap and water. If you have problems,
get medical help.
July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. Six key points
are being stressed: 1. There are vaccines available
to prevent Hepatitis A & B but none for Hepatitis
C, although a new drug is available to treat Hep-C.
About 242,000 Canadians are living with Hep-C
and many of them dont know it. It may take 1020 years for symptoms to occur, but liver damage
has been occurring all that time. If you are over
60 and had been exposed to blood products before
1992, get tested.
There is a relationship between the more hours
we spend daily at our jobs, the greater the risk we
are of abusing alcohol. Longer hours adds more
stress to our lives and alcohol is often used as a
stress reducer.
Sometimes, people confuse the words dementia

When Sarah Foy was diagnosed with
Lupus and Crohns Disease in Grade 11,
she had no idea that her search for new
chemical-free recipes would cause her
to stumble upon a 150-year-old candy
recipe that is now the fundamental
piece of her recently launched candy
business Shhugar.
The new Strathmore-based venture is
the only hard candy business in town.
Shhugar has been a hit since it made
its debut one month ago at the Strathmores Farmers Market, and even resulted in the 21-year-old being commissioned to make favours for a wedding
and candies for a birthday party.
I have been doing the farmers mar-
kets very week and I just sold out of

nearly everything this last Friday, said
Sarah Foy, the business owner and candy maker. I didnt think there would
be this much interest in it, but there has
been.
The idea for the candy came about a
year ago when Foy was looking online
for free recipes. She makes her own
food, as the chemicals in processed food
are triggers for her illnesses. During her
search she stumbled upon a Victorian
cookbook that featured a 150-year-old
hard candy recipe. She decided to give
it a go and had so much fun during the
past year tweaking the recipes with a
plethora of different flavours that she
quickly found her home packed with
the candy.
When people started saying that they
would pay for the candy, Foy began to

do some research into what she would
need to start up her own candy company.
It took about three months to get
that right and then I thought why not
give the farmers market a shot and get
rid of the stockpile that I had amassed.
The candy is handmade by Foy and is
packaged by her mother Helen. Foy has
an old, custom-made candy hook that
she uses to pull the candy. The only machinery she uses is a table that keeps
the candy hot, and she makes about
four batches a day.
Originally Foy planned on going between different farmers markets selling
the candies, but the business has done
so well that she thinks she would like
to open her own store one day.
Sarah Foy makes her own hard candies from a

recipes to add a variety of different flavours and
designs.

I would have it so that people can

see me making the candy, she said.
They would be able to pick their own
flavours and I would make it right there
for them. I think that would be a good
goal.

A record from 1095 produced by
Heritage Studio in England shows the
name Baldwinus in Bury, England.
By 1200 it had been changed to
Baldewin. The name means a bold
friend and was common in England
in the 11th Century. It later changed
to Baldwin as shown
in reference to Mathias William Baldwin,
who lived from 1795 to
1866, and built railway
locomotives, one of
which was called Old
Ironsides produced in
1832. Mathias went on
to build over 1,000 locomotives by 1861!
Another member of
this family was famous
in a completely different way - his greatgrandmother was a
bareback rider with
Barkers Travelling Circus who travelled extensively through
England and Europe in the 1800s. She
is recorded as having performed for
the Czar of Russia, and appeared with
Barnum and Baileys Circus in America.
Godfreys grandmother travelled across
England and France accompanying
her husband, George Baker, to boxing
matches, as he was one of the original
bareknuckle boxers.
Godfrey was born in London, England on Feb. 14, 1925, the eldest of two
children. He had a younger sister. At the
age of five years, the family moved to
Quebec, for a year, before returning to
England where they stayed until after
the Second World War. Godfrey joined
the Royal Navy in 1944, and served until after the war ended.
In 1945, his ship visited the Isle of
Wight, and it was here that he met his

future wife Rosemary at a dance. She
was a make-up artist, who came to
make up the sailors who were appearing in a show. She also worked as a
toupee maker.
They were married in 1945, had a
daughter Susan, born the day they arrived in Vancouver in 1947. He now has
two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. As they had
nowhere to live, they
stayed for some time at
the original Hotel Vancouver, with other war
vets. He told me some
wonderful stories of
those days, too numerous to include here.
His first job was as a
motorman for Harry
Lyons and Dick Gardner on the Vancouver Street Cars, which
operated
sightseeing
tours around town. He
followed this by eight
years with BCE, then
became a steel worker and welder for
Dominion Bridge, on False Creek in
Vancouver. The next 12 years he spent
as a Drivers Examiner for the B.C.
Government. In his late 50s, he semiretired and travelled across Canada and
Europe, with his wife Rosemary. About
seven years ago, they decided to settle
in Strathmore, so they had their own
house built, where he still lives today.
Regretfully, Rosemary passed away in
2010, at the age of 84 years.
An ongoing love of Godfreys, from
an early age, has been his love for music. He is a well-known and respected
member of the Gleichen Community
Choir, and has sung with barber shop
choirs, and on cruise ships, amongst
others. His house is always full of music.

Fire ban shuts down burn pits;

transfer sites overflowing

A padlock was secured tightly on
Wheatland Countys largest burn pit
last week, as extreme weather conditions forced the municipality into a
county-wide fire ban and prohibited
the Carseland waste transfer site from
utilizing the pit leaving sites at maximum capacity and turning away further materials.
Carseland joined the countys seven other sites Gleichen, Rockyford,
Cluny, Rosebud, Standard, Hussar, and
Strathmore when an advisory to ban
all fire permits, including the burning
pits at the waste transfer sites, was issued July 6.
As a result of the dry spell, all fire
permits were suspended until the ban
is lifted.
Big burns like that require a fire
permit and are not acceptable, so thats
why we are getting so backed up at
the transfer sites, said Lisa Bastarache,
communications officer for Wheatland
County. Thats why were asking people not to bring the stuff in right now
until weve had a chance to get rid of
whats there. Theyre all pretty full.
The province issued a full fire ban
for Alberta forests on May 25, as the
province battled 629 wildfires since
April 1, blazes that destroyed 13,098
acres. With temperatures rising into
the 30s, Wheatland County plunged

into a one-in-one hundred year dry
spell, according to Alberta Agricutlure
and Forestry.
As a result, waste transfer sites, such
as Carseland, are struggling with the
volume and can no longer accept
burnable materials.
I did a burn eight weeks ago and it
took nine hours, thats how much stuff
we have, said Joe McCluskey, transfer
site operator at the Carseland waste
and transfer site. This rain that we
got, it never hit Gleichen or Standard.
So those fire chiefs out there wont let
us burn because they didnt get the
water we did. Its pretty bad, but we
cant argue with Mother Nature.
As of June 9, Wheatland County declared a fire ban representing an extreme fire risk. Due to dry and windy
conditions, the ban includes usage of
camp stoves, solid fuel barbeques, incinerators for farm and acreage use,
and recreational camp fires. However,
internal household fireplaces and liquid fuel barbeques propane or natural gas are exempt from the ban. As a
result, all outstanding burning permits
have been suspended indefinitely. For
now, Wheatland County transfer sites
will have to sit tight and residents remain patient, until the fire ban is lifted.

Rosebud Fellowship Day hosts successful work bee

lage, including assembling picnic tables, demolishing a sagging porch, cleaning up old theatre
sets, gardening in public spaces and adding wings
to the Festival Stage.
The days biggest project was constructing a
picnic shelter overlooking the river. LaVerne Erickson, RSA founder, wrote in an email that the
shelter is a gift back to Wheatland County who
permitted it to be built on municipal land, and
whose Community Enhancement Grant paid for
the materials.
It was a great day in our town, said Ray Wall,
pastor of Rosebud Community Church. So good
to see so many involved in the various projects!
Erickson and others had volunteered over 168
hours in preparation for the day, Van Dyke wrote
in an e-mail, and volunteers donated 320 more
hours on the day of the bee. In the weeks following, local volunteers continued giving much more
time to complete the picnic shelter.
The theme of the day was Fellowship an old
English word depicting the joy of working together as a demonstration of shared values showing
their love of God and community, Erickson wrote
in the e-mail.
Volunteers enjoyed a breakfast provided by
Rosebud School of the Arts, and the Rosebud Lions provided lunch. Many volunteers took advantage of the volunteer discount and attended The
Wizard of Oz at Rosebud Theatre together that
evening.
They didnt want the fun to end, Van Dyke
said.
Twenty-five people attended the annual general
meeting of the newly-revived Rosebud Fellowship
that afternoon.
The aim of the Rosebud Fellowship is support the artistic endeavours of Rosebud and be
a positive presence in the community, said Van
Dyke. It enables friends and donors of Rosebud
Schools of the Arts, as well as its graduates, to stay
plugged into Rosebud and offer their help to the
School and the community they love.
The Fellowship elected a new nine-member
board and has received 37 new and renewed
members.
RSA alumni, staff and friends of Rosebud anyone who wants to see this little hamlet prosper
and be a rural home for guests from everywhere,
said Erickson is welcome to become a member.

Last Train to Nibroc: a sweet and funny

romance at Rosebud Theatre

The Last Train to Nibroc, a sweet and funny romance directed by Kevin McKendrick, opened on
Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage July 2.
May and Raleigh grew up in neighboring Kentucky towns, but dont meet until theyre on the
homebound train from Los Angeles, each of them
carrying broken dreams. May (Heather Pattengale)
had hoped to get married and become a missionary, but broke up with her fianc when she discovered he wasnt the man she thought.
Raleigh ( Jordan Cutbill) was training to be an
air force pilot but had to leave the forces when
he developed epilepsy. He still dreams of being
a writer.
Their hilarious and hopeful love story plays out
over two and a half years, from December 1940 to
the spring of 1942. I was afraid the three far-apart
scenes might seem disjointed, but playwright Arlene Hutton wove the back story so smoothly into
the dialogue, it seems I saw those in-between
events too. All of the dialogue feels very genuine,
made even more so because Pattengale and Cutbill deliver it in consistent, believable Kentucky
accents.
In the intimate setting of the BMO Studio Stage,
the chemistry between these two is nearly tangible. Watching the adoration in Pattengales eyes,
hearing the teasing in Cutbills voice, observing
their finely-crafted body language I felt like I
was sitting in someones living room, watching
two people fall in love.
Ive seen Pattengale play diverse roles most recently in We are the Body, where she gave a heartwrenching performance as a Romanian Christian,
imprisoned and tortured for her faith. Here shes
just as convincing as the naive and trusting young
May. This is the first lead role Ive seen Cutbill perform, and after Last Train to Nibroc, Ill be looking

for opportunities to see him perform again.

May and Raleighs story is sweet, sorrowful,
healing and very tender. For anyone who loves
a romance, itll also be deeply satisfying. I confess
Ive already seen it twice and will likely see it
again.

Long live the Queen

Long live the Queen is a saying that signifies well wishes to reigning royalty. A letter to the
County of Wheatland council from the Monarchist
League of Canada requested that a special day be
set aside to mark Queen Elizabeth the IIs reign.
As of Sept. 9, 2015 she is the longest reigning
queen in modern history.
Buckingham Palace has calculated that on Sept.
9, the Queens reign will surpass that of Canadas
other great Mother of Confederation Queen Victoria, said Dominion Chairman Robert Finch.
None of us need to be reminded how remarkable of a woman is Queen Elizabeth II. Monarchists or Republicans, Canadians agree that our
sovereign has shown the ideals to which we all
might aspire, which reflect our countrys traditions and the best of its contemporary life: inclusiveness, stability, friendship, service, dignity, defiance of stereotypes of age and gender, to name
just a few.
County council took the information as information and decided to wait until they heard
whether the Strathmore Legion was planning

events for the celebration, before committing to
action.
The Queen has enjoyed a long and fairly peaceful reign, but there are some who feel it is time
for the Queen to hand rule over to younger family
members.
This year the Queen is 87 years old and her
husband Prince Philip is 92 years old. There have
been times when age and health have been a
factor in delegating some of her royal duties to
Prince Charles.
While she is alive she could appoint Prince
Charles as her regent, but news sources say abdicating the throne is not something she would
consider. Some anticipate reign will eventually
fall to her grandson Prince William, who with his
wife the Duchess of Cambridge and their children, have been a favorite at events.

Revitalization award
The Downtown Design Review Committee recognized Mr. Ron Warrack and
Ms. Katelyn Haffner with the first recognition award at the regular council

Badlands Passion Play

a multi-sensory experience

The 2015 Canadian Badlands Passion Play, telling the story of Jesus life, opened its 22nd season,
July 10.
My Passion Play experience this year began on
a low note; there was no record of our tickets,
and several other patrons had the same difficulty. It was clearly stressful for staff, but they were
consistently gracious with patrons and with each
other. They found us seats, and my friend and I
agreed afterward that the show more than made
up for the minor hassle beforehand.
This is the fourth time Ive seen the Passion
Play, but I could see it a dozen more times and absorb new details every time. This year, I realized in
a new way what a multi-sensory experience it is.
The play is set in a natural amphitheatre in the
Drumheller badlands, and we attended on a hot,
humid day, which made me feel even closer to
the original climate and terrain of the story. I marvelled again at how the actors run all over the
little valley. Even the Alberta sky becomes part of
the set when Jesus releases a dove overhead.
The actors use mics, but the show also makes
use of natural acoustics. We heard a baby cry,
sheep baa, and crowdspeople laugh and chatter.
Chanting, singing, drumbeats and instrumental
music wafted all around us. When religious leaders urge Pilate to execute Jesus, they turn and

clothing to reveal sections of blue. Its designed so
the crowd will respond even if theyre not consciously aware, she said and I realized that had
been true for me.
The movements and locations of the 100 or
more actors are all precisely timed, she said.
Where theyre passing bread, for instance, each
person passes at the same time, on a drumbeat.
When all the details have been rehearsed, it
almost feels like a machine, Warkentin said, yet
working together precisely also strengthens the
performers sense of community. Its almost like
theres this heartbeat, which gets louder and
deeper as they tell the story.
Warkentin plays the Samaritan Woman, who discovers that Jesus knows all about her but loves
her anyway. And for Warkentin, this huge communal story is also very personal. I feel like its my
story, she said. You cant help but have all your
heart in the telling of this story.

Rural addressing program questioned

Councillor Rex Harwood brought a residents concern about the rural addressing process to the attention of Wheatland County council on July 7. He said
the resident had a property adjacent to a
rural village and did not yet have an address designation. CAO Alan Parkin clarified how the process worked. Wheatland
staff are working on the project and it
is anticipated that the process with be
complete in about one-and-a-half years.
We are not going to focus on individual cases. We will do all the communities
at once, said Parkin.
In the past, addressing had been taken
from utility company designations, but
then the province stepped in to regulate
a comprehensive addressing system that
helps emergency response.
There are policies that dictate to the
type of designation given to an acreage
or farm adjacent to villages and hamlets.
Parkin said the address is taken from the
main access point on the property.
DUMPING DILEMMA
Illegal dumping at transfer sites is an
ongoing issue experienced throughout
the county. Councillor Rex Harwood
suggested council look at the usage card
utilized by Camrose for its residents.
County staff have set up a survey system
at the various sites within Wheatland
County, to document where the garbage
is coming from. They have found urban
residents are indeed utilizing the rural
sites. However they are not pushing restrictions at this time.
We found when we tightened up the
site, people began dumping in the ditches, said Councillor Don Vander Velde
about the Carseland site.
Councillor Ben Armstrong said there
is sometimes confusion about who can
utilize the sites. For more information on

WADEMSA 911 UPDATES
TRACKING SYSTEM
Councillor Berniece Bland, in her report to council, indicated WADEMSA is
required to have an upgraded 9-1-1 response program in place by 2016. The
system will improve the crews information on call location and incorporate a
tracking mechanism that can map the
callers location. It can even be accessed
by crew cell phones. One company proposed to supply the program at a cost of
$1 million, but an alternate company can
supply the service for $100,000. WADEMSA is hoping to get financing in place for
the service and expects it will improve
response to emergency situations.
WADEMSA responded to 1,708 calls in
2014.
CHECKBOOK UPDATE
County spending remains steady this
month with $4.9 million in financial reconciliations. Sandy Johal-Watt, Wheatland County Finance Manager, updated
council on the monthly finances at the
July 7 council meeting. She said investments were averaging about a 1.9 per
cent return.
Johal-Watt said that there were 60 outstanding delinquent tax notices, which
were delivered by hand by county officers, to ensure residents received the notices. She said there were about 5.6 per
cent of taxes uncollected to date.
She also asked for a decision about
credit cards used for business purchasing, as the current purchase program
doesnt have the module software that
directly downloads amounts spent to
accounting programs. The appropriate
system would cut time spent on record
keeping and increase efficiency.
In 2013, Chinook thought they could
meet our goals, however they are not
there yet, said CAO Alan Parkin.

He said department purchases can be

larger amounts than the current credit
card limits of $25,000. It was suggested
the use of a purchasing card would be a
better alternative. The county is currently using MasterCard for purchases and
will continue the practise until a new
tender can be found for the desired software/financial supplier. As per councils
wishes, Chinook and ATB will be the

County of Wheatlands overall financial
services providers. Reeve Glenn Koester
said although the purchasing cards make
more funds available, if due diligence is
paid to spending and all the checks and
balances are in place, there shouldnt be
any problem with departments using the
purchasing cards.

Hussar debates village status

The Village of Hussar is exploring the
viability of continuing its village status,
by examining the pros and cons of becoming a hamlet under the County of
Wheatland.
Municipal Affairs representatives Linda Reynolds and Darryl Joyce appeared
at Wheatland County Council on July 7,
to outline the processes involved in decision making processes offered by Municipal Affairs.
We have a diverse background and
have the ability to talk the talk and work
with people on these issues, said Reynolds during her presentation.
She outlined the partnerships and
strategies that would be involved once a
request for help is made by the community to Municipal Affairs for help from
the community. It could be initiated
through a council request, resident petition, or a failure to meet key measurement guidelines.
A questionnaire would be used as a
tool to ascertain if the village is meeting
key measurements for viability. Three
or more no answers indicate there may
be problems. Reynolds said this doesnt
mean dissolution is necessarily a given
outcome, as there are a lot of resources
that can be accessed to help villages get
back on track.
Municipal Affairs is sending a team that
includes Reynold and Joyce to provide
support to Hussar working through the
process. The first step will be completing
a self-assessment tool kit that will identify the villages strengths and weaknesses. There will be meetings with residents
to develop key messages. Goals will be
developed for actions to take.
An electoral vote will be taken and
then village council will make a decision. A final report will be generated
to deliver to the community and it will

also be sent to the Municipal Minister.
The minister has the final decision on
dissolution.
The process can take anywhere from
nine to 12 months, and there are resources that the village can take to illicit funding. One of the options in the
viability toolkit provided by Municipal
Affairs is to determine if there are other
resources that can be tapped to maintain viability. One suggestion is asking
for help from Wheatland County council.
Hussar has occasionally requested
help with funding from the County of
Wheatland. The most recent request was
a reduction in waste transfer contract
fees. Councillor Ben Armstrong felt that
the village should meet the terms of the
original contract, which they had previously signed with the county.
I question whether next time they
will come at us for something else they
cant afford, said Armstrong.
If all factors in the process add up to
a dissolution decision, there are grants
that can be obtained to complete the
smooth transition to county administration of the hamlet.
The 2014 grant for an infrastructure review is $150,000 transitional funding for
administration, government and legislative costs of $350,000 and a final grant
of $450,000 for critical upgrades to capital assets and non-utility capital debt repayment. Reynolds cautioned that these
were last years guidelines and there has
not been an indication from the current
government if this will be continued or
changed.
There have been other villages in the
county, such as Gleichen and Namaka,
that have decided to become hamlets.
Hussar is not alone in the province going through this process; Swan Hills, Rycroft, Hill Spring, and Willington are all
completing similar processes this year.
Strathmore centres receive

necessary upgrades

The accumulative strain on the infrastructure of two public facilities required two councils attention ahead of
the 2016 budget-year and resulted in
the dispensation of thousands of dollars for upgrades.
Over the years, increased usage
due to expansion in summer sport programs and daytime ice usage caused
the Strathmore Family Centres doors,
especially its handicap-access mechanical systems, to withstand greater
wear-and-tear. The east entrance to the
Strathmore Civic Centre also endured
damage from harsh weather conditions
in previous winters, where closing the
warped doors required a chain and
deadbolt because its hardware, doorframe, and doors no longer locked in
the cold temperatures, administration
said.
With thousands of dollars being exhausted in maintenance every year,
town council signed off on spending
over $66,000 on a replacement.
This upgrade will allow so that both
sets of doors open when you hit the
one outside button or the inside button depending on which direction you
are going, which will make it easier for
those people in wheelchairs or walkers, as well as kids carrying gigantic
bags of hockey equipment, said Tracy
Simpson, community services coordinator with the town. We feel that with
replacing the full four sets of doors
well alleviate a large portion of this
maintenance cost.
Concerns, regarding both projects,
were raised at the 2015 spring workshop with a request that both items
already be brought before council this
year. Administration informed council on July 8, that maintenance on the
Strathmore Civic Centre doors cost between $2,500 and $6,000 annually. A
quote provided by Starcraft Construction, includes the removal of the facilitys eight doors, installation of eight
hollow metal doors with glass, the installation of four handicapped operators, and painting the doors and hardware.

companies, and they said one of our

biggest problems is that our doors are
all glass, and glass is just not as durable, Simpson said. Theyre suggesting
a replacement of a fully steel door with
only a small window at the top, so that
itd be more secure.
Starcraft Construction also proposed
providing the Strathmore Family Centre with modifications and service to
its eight doors. It will ensure the doors
not blow past 90 degrees, prevent heat
loss and frosting, and allow for the
doors to be locked and secured properly an option posing a struggle currently.
This is long past due to have this
repaired and I have absolutely no concerns, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
Town council awarded Starcraft Construction, who proposed the lowest
bid, with upgrading the Strathmore
Family Centre doors for $25,059, while
providing necessary upgrades to the
Strathmore Civic Centre for $41,123.

Pat Fule were absent during the July 8
regular council meeting.

Local family embarks on rare adventure

Colin Steadman and his family are embarking
on a rare journey, one thats never been attempted
in Alberta and which will act as a warm-up for an
even bigger undertaking next year.
The Strathmore family recently purchased a
$30,000 hovercraft from the United States, and on
July 11, headed out to cover a 3,000 km distance
across Alberta.
I had seen the bigger hovercrafts and it always

sat in the back of my mind, said Steadman.
I found out you can actually buy smaller ones.
Eventually I talked the wife into letting me, she
said you can have a toy but we all have to be able
to fit in it and you have to be able to use it 12
months of the year.
Steadman began mapping out his route after
discussions arose with a Coast Guard team during
a trip to Vancouver. With an initial plan of travelling from Vancouver to Lake Superior, the family

was left in the lurch when the hovercraft was held up at

customs.
As an alternative, Steadman, who works for the Alberta
Construction and Safety Association, was approached by
his employer to consider a shorter trip.
My boss came to me and said you know what why
dont you tour Alberta, use it as a warm-up for next year
and visit these regions, recalls Steadman. Going around
Alberta was probably a blessing because its almost 3,000
km this trip. Well be able to figure out what do we really
need for next year, the whole familys looking at it as a
great warm-up for next year.
Steadmans interest in hovercrafts stemmed from his
background of eight years in the military dealing with helicopters and hovercrafts.
He settled on a $30,000 Neoteric Hovertrek model out of
Indiana that can be operated in any season, and on surfaces
such as ice and football fields.
One of the major reasons that he chose this model was
because of some of the features that are user friendly on
some of the waterways. Neoteric Hovercrafts, who is based
in Indiana, are sold internationally and have garnered much
success on the global scale.
Canada in particularly has been good along with Russia,
Sweden, pretty much all of Scandinavia because of the environment, said Filip Przybysz, public relations representative for Neoteric Hovercrafts. Theres a lot of ice and winter
adventures in Canada and a lot of customers buy hovercrafts because they would like to go on lakes and rivers.
He added that places like Canada are becoming more
popular for hovercrafts and the market for them are mostly
for those who are pioneers and know about them.
Przybysz noted that Neoteric makes 30 to 40 hovercrafts
in slower years and 60 in a busier year and at least half go
to the safety industry and the others go to recreational use.
The trip began on July 11 in Lethbridge where they
opened the trip on the Oldman River, before making their
way up to the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers. They
will also make their way down the Athabasca River before
concluding on the Bow River.

Farmers perturbed by consequences of drought

A domino effect, sparked by this
years drought, became the driving
force behind discussions at an agricultural round-table meeting with notable
local producers and Canadas agriculture minister on July 4.
Approximately 20 individuals were
present at the information-gathering
meeting with Minister Gerry Ritz,
which shed light on numerous staggering concerns in the agriculture industry,
affected by the unpredictable dry spell.
The drought is on everybodys mind
because its been a few years since weve
had these kind of dry conditions, said
Martin Shields, the Conservative Party
candidate for the federal Bow River riding who hosted the discussions.
The hay prices are going up, cattle
guys are worried about being able to
feed next winter and so cattle producers are looking at possibly selling cattle
early this fall. Its very widespread and
huge. There are little pockets of places
where we had thundershowers but its
very isolated so the drought is extremely widespread.
According to the Alberta Agriculture
and Forestry crop condition reports,
crop condition and soil moisture ratings
continue to deteriorate in all regions
across the province, and have dipped
to the lowest ratings collected since
2009. The reports also state that pasture growth struggles to keep up with
grazing and hay yields. With Wheatland
County in dire need of precipitation,
some operations are already on the radar for crop insurance, and despite recent showers in the area, not all areas
were able to reap the benefits.
Its been a very nerve-wracking couple of weeks and last week was a really
tough week, said Matt Gosling, agrolo-
gist and partner with Ag Premium.

Once you get about 15 or 20 miles
east of Strathmore it goes from bad to
very bad. Its definitely going to affect
our grain yield at the end of the year
and that has tremendous economic impact from custom application to grain
trucking, the elevators will be handling
less grain, so its huge.
In comparison to last year, soil moisture looked promising in early 2015,
but suffered during seeding period with
very little rainfall. Although precipitation may still impact crops during the
current reproductive stage, Gosling expects its unlikely for it to influence any
big yield impacts. However, he added
between 10 to 20 per cent of the county
that are rated average to above average,
might find the rain will have an impact
on their bottom line.
Those crops really got hit hard, and
this rain wont do much if anything for
those crops, but well take any moisture
we get, Gosling said.
This rain that we just received over
the weekend, in most areas will really
help give a little bit of weight to the
crop. I think its too late to think that
therell be any sort of real big yield impact as far as making more bushels.
During the round-table discussion, local farmers and producers had a chance
to voice their concerns that also triggered debates regarding trade agreements, transportation, the origin of our
food, education and recruitment, and
cattle prices.
Among those present, the Strathmore
& District Agricultural Society, who is
gearing up to host their annual muchanticipated Strathmore Stampede event,
is facing some challenges of their own

as farmers deal with the implications.
Were a little concerned because
one of our signature events is coming
up and we do have some international
people that come in, and were a little
nervous I guess as to what our numbers are going to be this year and were
bracing for some changes, said Brad
Walls, president of the Strathmore &
District Agricultural Society.
Currently were sitting about par,
and thats good for us. We were expecting that with the oil and gas doing
what it did, and now recently with the
new government everyone is a little bit
unsure whats going to be transpiring
there. Were optimistic that things are
going to just march along. We have lost
some sponsors, Im not going to say we
havent but, we also gained new ones
as well.
Walls assured that the event will not
be cancelled, but added those farmers
who may now be required to harvest
during that time usually make up a
large portion as sponsors and spectators.
For now, the industry is dependent
on Mother Nature. And while the arid
conditions may be familiar to some,
others wonder if the younger generation of farmers will be able to cope.
You try to understand some of the
situations but when you actually start
to hear how some of the farmers are
really doing you really start to grow
concerned, Walls added. You really
do, and one of the things, a lot of the
younger farmers maybe havent been
through this yet. Are they going to survive it?

Decommissioned pool pump

receives new motor

Town council once again
dipped into the pockets of Financial Stabilization reserve
to make up a $10,000 shortfall
caused by replacing equipment at the lap pool, which is
currently running on its backup pump.
The lap pool circulation
pump at the Strathmore
Aquatic Centre, which is a vital component of the operations of the pool, has been
out of commission since June
10. Without the circulation
pump the pool can only remain open for four hours, and
while the six-year-old backup
pump has been working hard
to keep the pool active, its not
equipped to handle the load.
Its definitely a busy place
and [the pump] runs 24
hours a day, seven days a
week, every day of the year
except during shut down
when the pool is closed, so it
works very hard, said Tracy
Simpson, program services
coordinator for the Town of
Strathmore, who added that
summer programs drive up
attendance.
The reason we have two
pumps is for exactly this reason. So when the main pump
goes down the main backup
can handle it and the pool is
never down. This one is our
main pump, so its the largest
one and obviously our most

costly. The backup pump is
older and its not quite as big,
so its not meant to be used on
an annual basis year around.
A report submitted by
James Electric, an electrical
company who has been servicing the machine since its
installation 13 years ago, suggested that the motor was no
longer repairable and in need
of replacement. Since the pool
was built, the pump which
circulates the water through
the pool every hour to clean
it, treat it, and thus ensure the
safety of the pool required
various parts replacements
over the years. According to
town administration, servicing was required every two
years with the majority of the
parts having been replaced at
least once previously.
According to Simpson, administration is confident that
the pump currently in place
will suffice until the new
pump arrives later this week.
As the purchase was not
a budgeted item, the $10,
407.95 plus GST required
to replace the motor will be
coming from Financial Stabilization.
With the absence of Councillor Brad Walls and Councillor Pat Fule, town council
passed a motion to replace
the Marathon Motor for the
lap pool circulation pump on
July 8.

Summer is here, and with Alberta
temperatures rising to the 30s, pet owners are reminded to keep their animals
safe from the heat.
Animal welfare organizations such as
the Animal Care Centre in Strathmore
and the Calgary Humane Society are
among the various institutions trying to
keep pets safe in the summer.
The groups are busy spreading their
safety message including the information that even a small increase in temperature, about two to three degrees,
can cause serious harm to an animal
whether they are outside or left in a car.
Dont take your dogs in the vehicle,
said Reesa Bruce, veterinary practice
manager at the Animal Care Centre. If
you have to, then someone should at
least stay in the vehicle with the dog so
they can monitor the temperature.
The Animal Care Centre of Strathmore
also added that the temperature in a car
can rise above 40 degrees within five
minutes even with the windows down.
This rapid temperature surge can
cause a rise in the animals body heat,
and can increase the risk of heatstroke,
organ failure or even death. As dogs
can only sweat through their paws and
noses, a small area to lose heat through,
this means the animal can overheat very

warns that by not taking safety concerns into consideration, consequences

People dont realize if your dog is suffering in there, then yeah your window
potentially will be broken, you could
lose your pet and you could be charged
under the Animal Protection Act and
the Criminal Code, said Sage Pullen
McIntosh, senior manager of communications for the Calgary Humane Society.
If you know you are going somewhere
and you know you need to stop along
the way, leave your pet, just dont bring
them. Get your errands done first, because it will only take a few minutes to
see really tragic consequences.
However, what some owners may not
know is that pet safety extends beyond
the car and they must be careful about
taking their animals outside. Pets must
be provided with plenty of water and
adequate shade while they are outside
in the heat. There are many fun ways
to keep pets cool, whether it be taking
them swimming in a lake or freezing
popsicles with treats in them.
Bruce, who is also a pet-owner, said
she has to monitor her dark-furred dog
and bring her into the cool shade when
outside in the sun.
She doesnt know what is good for
her and she will stay out there all day in
the hot sun, Bruce said.
Dog owners must also ensure that the
sidewalk is not to hot to walk their pets,
as the overheated concrete can leave the
dogs paws seriously burnt. According
to the society you can test the ground
to see if it is too hot for the animal by
placing your hand on the ground. If it
feels too hot, then it is too hot for the
pets paws.
If it is hot for you, imagine how hot
it is for your furry friend, remarked McIntosh.
The Animal Care Centre has not seen
increased cases since the temperature
has risen. Bruce also said the cases in
Strathmore so far have been minimal.

Car and truck show returns to Rosebud

After a few car enthusiasts grew tired
of missing shows dedicated to their
interests in surrounding areas, the individuals put their heads together and
launched the Gearheads Custom Classic
Car and Truck show that is celebrating
its fifth anniversary on the weekend.
With an increase in devotees and
community members over the years,
Rosebud will once again act as host to
vintage exemplars such as a 69 Mercury
Convertible, a 94 SS Impala, and a 74
Ford pick-up composed of stages of
hot-rod and restoration.
Attracting individuals from all over
Alberta and as far-reaching as the United States, this years event is expected
to be another fun-filled celebration.
Were kind of a well-kept secret,
said Ed Sonmor, owner of the High Ea-
gle RV Resort and sponsor of the show.

We developed this years ago, and its
just growing in leaps and bounds. Its a
nice Sunday afternoon, it builds a little
buzz for the Rosebud community, and
its good for our park.
The day will feature anywhere from
40 to 75 classic cars and performances
by the Cat Country Cougar Hunters,
who will rock the stage starting at noon.
The event also includes a barbeque and
secured numerous door prizes from
sponsors.
We bring it back because its fun,
people like it, and a lot of different guys
come back because they built a new car
last year and they want to show it off,
said Sonmor. Were all car guys over
here and we cant get out of our resort
to go to these shows because theyre on
weekends. So five years ago we decided
to bring a show here and had tremendous success, so we just keep on keep-

The Carseland Hotel celebrated its
100th Anniversary, and the event also
celebrated the life of previous owner
Sharon Zimmerman, who passed away
last year.
The event took place on July 11 and
started with a pancake breakfast. Patrons were able to party the hot day
away with entertainment such as a rocking set from Snake Oil Whiskey band, a
raffle and the band TNT.
One of the highlights was the Elvis
impersonator who entertained the delighted crowd with some hip-swinging
tunes. The appearance of Elvis had
symbolic meaning, as Zimmerman was
a huge fan.
She was a big, huge fan, said Judy
Jones, the manager of the Hotel.
She had his picture on a flag and on
the anniversary of his death she would
put up the flag.
According to Jennifer Wiebe, who
wrote a blog post about the day, Zimmerman bought the hotel in 1974 and
she was a well-loved member of the
Carseland community.
Upon her passing the ownership of
the hotel passed on to her sons Jeff and
Jordan Zimmerman.
She was an awesome lady and this
anniversary was a tribute to her, said
Jones.
The event ended with a pig roast dinner supplied by Roy Groves, who is well
known for his delicious roasts.
Jones was thankful for everyone who
came out and made the event a success.

The Carseland Hotel celebrated its

100th anniversary on July 11. The

LET IT RAIN
We had a very dry early
spring. It seemed like it was
the go-to topic for conversation starters. Saying
something about it to a local
farmer eventually became
like a poke-in-the-eye friendly gesture.
The only times it seemed the
clouds would lightly cough
up a few drops was after I,
you guessed it, had washed
all the outside windows on
our house, which I did twice
in May (the second time, my
hand had been forced by the
sprinkler hitting the windows,
in an attempt to keep the
lawn green).
This made me wonder if there
was any truth to the myth
that washing windows made
it rain?
In keeping with the theme
of cause and effect, my next
thought was that I would likely see more response to the
amazing Message of Hope:
God making a way where
men could only fail (which is
the Gospel of Jesus Christ)

played against the Calgary Xtreme during the
provincials on July 10 at the Ag Diamonds.
The Strathmore Thunder U21 girls fast pitch team defeated the Calgary Xtreme 5-3 to win the gold
medal as provincial hosts from July 10-12 at the Strathmore Ag Diamonds. The team comprised
of Libby Wheeler, Morgan Ackerman, Jessica Murphy, Alyssa Lavallee, Shaylene Magwood, Maddison Mitchell, Brooke Johansen, Kirstyn Johnson, Megan Lecavalier, Shayla Pollock and Jordan
Mitchell are off to the Western Canadian Junior Championships in Surrey B.C. from August 6-9.

The Strathmore Thunder U21 fast
pitch team won the gold medal as
provincial hosts, edging the Calgary
Xtreme 5-3 in the final on July 12 at
the Strathmore Agricultural Society diamonds.
Going into the final, the girls had
a 3-1 record but started off the game
with a five-hour rain delay. That, however, did not seem to faze the team as
they started off with two quick runs in
the first inning.
They were able to tack another one
on in the third before the Xtreme got
one back in the fifth to make it 3-1.
After trading a couple of runs in the
sixth and seventh inning, strong defensive play was all the Thunder needed to
preserve the win.

Kirstyn Johnson pitched six strong
innings for the win, Libby Wheeler supplied relief in the seventh inning, said
head coach Lanky Johnson. Centre
fielder Jordan Mitchell (and) shortstop
Jessica Murphy both made great defensive plays in the late innings to prevent
any scoring.
Johnson added that what made it a
successful weekend was the fact the
bats were going and producing runs.
Over the weekend, (the team) batted around the .400 mark and when
you have that it makes things easier,
he said.
The Thunder squad will now prepare
the Junior Western Canadian Championships in Surrey, B.C. from August 6-9.
For the Strathmore Thunder U16
team, the end result was not as exciting

as they had hoped, as the tournament

hosts were plagued by inconsistancy.
Assistant coach Daren Kennett
thought if they did not have as many
slow starts and dug in more they might
have been playing for a medal.
Weve got to play better in all aspects, said Kennett.
He thought the girls competed hard
all weekend considering the teams they
played against were from their regular
season league.
All the other teams we played, played
really well, said Kennett. There was
no easy ride. Everybody came to play
and it was a tough competition.
The girls were able to put it together
and got their lone win in the last game.
Kennett suggested that they might
play a few games next year in preparation for provincials.

The Strathmore Venom junior B lacrosse team gave it
their all against the Red Deer
Renegades in Round 1 of the
playoffs, but fell short two
straight games.
The Venom suffered a 1110 loss on home court on
July 10, before falling 13-7
the following day.
For the Venom, early injuries and suspensions ultimately cost them the series,
as they could not keep up
with a skilled Renegades
squad.
The first game was the
game we needed to win,
said head coach Mike Olver.
We got beat by one goal
and Red Deer is a very good
team. We had beat them
through the season, and after that game we ended up
with one guy suspended and

in the second game we had
another guy suspended and
some of our players were injured in the end.
Olver added that due to injuries sustained by some of
the key players, the Venom
had a tough time catching
up.
When your players that
are going to score goals
are ones getting injured, its
tough, said Olver.
Despite a couple of losses,
the boys showed a tremendous amount of sportsmanship.
Olver really noticed it after
the last game how much fun
the kids had this year.
We all got together, we
had a team picture, kids had
smiles on their faces, said
Olver. Its different, 17 to
21-year-olds than kids that
come to junior high and high

school. Now youre dealing with them

working, they cant make all the games,
they dont make all the practices and
you got to work around all that and still
put a team together.
He expects to have a majority of his
roster back next year, with the exception of some of them trying for Tier 1
in Calgary.
Reds enjoyed Music City experience

From a night out at the Grand Old Opry to playing elite competition, the Strathmore Reds midget
triple-A team had a great experience on their feature trip to Tennessee from June 30 to July 8.
The young Reds learned a lot from the more
experienced teams who play baseball year round.
Every team we played down there were all 18,
19-year-olds, said bench coach Zane Anderson.
Were a young team, we have a lot of first years.
It was great to show the boys that they can compete against the best, older players from the states
so that was good. Despite going 1-3 in the tournament, the Reds were thrilled with their lone win
against a familiar opponent.

We beat the Vermont team which was nice because we actually played them in Alaska last year,
said Anderson.
The Tennessee team was very good as well, big
strong kids. Theyre a private school, so they draw
from a big area, not just their community. The
Louisiana team was the best team weve played.
There were a lot of players overwhelmed by the
experience and Anderson thought some of the
veterans took a leadership role in calming those
nerves.
Were playing a team six feet and 180 to 200
pounds, said Anderson.
It was pretty overwhelming for some of the
guys, but they handled it pretty well.

Venom struggle at provincials

Hoping to ride the high of
winning cities, the Strathmore
Venom bantam B lacrosse team
unfortunately struggled to carry
that momentum in Grande Prairie at provincials from July 1012.
The Venom ended up with a
0-4 record and faced some much
faster opponents.
Head coach Stacy Gallant saw
lots of positives out of his team
in the tournament despite the
unfamiliar opponents.
Thats a great tournament,
lots of good teams, said Gallant. We had two great games,
we got beat by one goal in two
games. We learned what kind
of competition that Alberta has
and what its going to take to return there.
The Venom showed that they
would not go away and battled
hard to the very end.
Were a good-hearted team,
said Gallant. We have a good
core group of five or six players who have been together for
six years. This team just meshes,

theyre all friends, theyre all
happy.
Gallant added that playing in
the city league really helped the
Venom progress and that teams
were only a point or two a part.
My boys, they tried hard, he
said. It was a hard-fought season, a lot of close games, but we
just out-worked the other teams
just sheer hard work.
He added that the team would
have to stay committed to teamwork if they were to be successful again next season.
U16 Girl Spurs deserved better fate

The Strathmore Spurs U16
girls were looking for some
consistency and almost found it
during a tight game against the
McKenzie United Soccer Club on
July 9 at the Ranch soccer fields.
The girls were edged 2-1 but
felt they deserved a better fate
in the game.
It wouldve been nice to get
a tie at least out of them, but
the second best team, we beat
twice and tied once, said head
coach Paul OLeary. Overall I
think were having a good year
but I guess were going to end
in third place.
He added that a tie would
have been possible but there
was a lot of inconsistent play on
the field.
Were struggling at times
to find our consistency, said

OLeary. We have great games
and tonight we didnt have as
good of game, but they almost
got their tie.
OLeary, who only started
coaching the U16 outdoor team
nine months ago, felt his team
was able to compete in the fourteam division, especially with a
couple of talented forwards.
We have two good forwards
that can score and theyve done
it consistently for us, said
OLeary. Shes our goalie some
nights but shes often our centre defender. Shes a girl that orchestrates everything.

knew the girls could have been
much better at attacking the
ball, but otherwise was satisfied
with the teams effort.
I think it was overall alright,
she said. I wish we went to the

ball a bit more. Weve had trouble finding goalies, weve been
switching out.
For only starting to play the
game last year, she has noticed
improvements in her game.
Ive been challenged a lot,
starting later than a lot of the
girls, but I think its helped me
overall because I like being
challenged and it helps me improve, she said.
The U16 Spurs finished up
their regular season in Calgary
on July 13.

The third annual Ride Dogs Ride Poker Run is vrooming into its third year
this upcoming August long weekend.
The ride is in memory of Glen Guido
Garland, who died in a bobcat machine
accident over year ago, who loved to
rescue animals and wanted to help the
Calgary Humane Society.
His dream was always to have a rescue of his own, said Garlands wife Diana.
We decided to continue on his charity. His charity is For Love of Animals
and thats of course to help all the rescues.
However, the Humane Society
dropped its sponsorship in the Poker
Run and now the Garland-family-led
organization has shifted their focus to
other foundations.
Last year, the ride raised $25,000 and
the hope is that it will continue to increase this year.
This year were doing Forever
Homes and the Megans Society, said
Garland.
Weve come away from the corporate
businesses because we know they can
fund pretty good. We decided just to do
the smaller rescues to help out because
they need the money way more than
what the others need.
She added that the event keeps the
family and close friends going in Garlands memory.
Garlands 30-year-old son, Munden,
who recently got his motorcycle license
will take his dads 2006 Harley Deluxe
out of the garage to ride it in this years
Poker Run. He said it will be an emotional ride because nothing can replace
a father but having that bike just sit
there was hard.
That bike doesnt deserve to just
sit in the garage, said Munden. I just
want to continue on, people deserve to
see that bike. Im really excited, I think
the whole family is.
The event will run from July 31 and
run right through until Aug. 3. The $20
fee will provide four nights of camping,
a t-shirt and dinner and live entertainment on Saturday, Aug. 1. The poker
run will commence at 11 a.m. on Aug. 1
at the Funny Farm and will make stops
in Standard, Rockyford, Strathmore
(Green Bar), and the Blue in Carseland,
then return to the farm. There will also
be a kids day on Aug. 2.
Old soldiers never die they just fade away

On July 11th, our family said goodbye to a beloved
husband, father, grand-father, great-grandfather
and great-great-grandfather who was 94. Gerrit was born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where he lived with his parents and six
siblings until 1939, the beginning of WWII. He
joined the Dutch army and became a member of
the Princess Irene Brigade. He served the Netherlands overseas for eight long years, ending his
military career in Indonesia with the Intelligence
Unit. Upon his return in 1946, he married his life
partner, Jurrina. Their children, Irene and Frank,
were both born in The Hague. The family of 4
immigrated to Calgary in 1958 and, shortly after
their arrival, Gerrit took a job at the CPR where he
worked until his retirement at age 65. In 1985,
Gerrit and Jurrina decided to move to Victoria,
BC. After a year, their retirement home became
Qualicum Beach for 23 years and in 2008 they
decided to move to Strathmore to be closer to
their family. Gerrit always loved fly-fishing which
he did with family and friends as often as possible, both in Holland and Canada. His expertise
at gardening was phenomenal and his gardens,
whether in Alberta or BC were show-pieces. He
always dressed like a gentleman and was liked
and loved by all who met him. Besides his lifes
love, Jurrina, and their two children, Gerrit is survived by two brothers in the Netherlands, a sisterin-law in Calgary and numerous cousins, nieces
and nephews world-wide, grand-children, greatgrand-children, as well as several great-greatgrandchildren. Gerrit was an Ordinary member at
the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion as a WWII
Veteran. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Rest in Peace, Opa. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Strathmore Legion Veteran
Activities Fund. No service will be held, at Gerrits
request. However, there will be a Celebration of
Life, open to all friends, at the Strathmore Legion
on Saturday, August 15, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00
