ST. MARY ROCKWOOD ROCKET REVIEW / SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 / VOLUME 2, NO.

Sports News
Fall athletics are off to a great start! The kids are showing great effort and playing hard in
both soccer and volleyball. Come out and cheer for your Rockets!
Before we know it though, the winter sport season will be upon us. If your child is
interested in playing a winter sport, their registration, fees, concussion form, and physical
must be in the school office prior to the first practice. When taking your child to the
doctor for their yearly well visit, please remember to take a physical form with you. If you
forget, most offices will fill these forms out for you afterwards. However, they may charge
you to do so. For physicals to count for CYO sports this school year, they must have
been done after April 15, 2014.
All Coaches - You MUST complete concussion training yearly.
The link can be found on the Athletics page of the website.
Please email or print and bring in your certificate to Mrs.
Stager or Mrs. Furtah as soon as it is completed.
Did you know..
you can help St. Mary fndraise without any money out of
your pocket! We participate in many programs that dont cot
anything, but they utilie things you may already have or

HELPFUL Hints for the
Iowa Tests

Eat a good breakfast!
Studies have shown that eating a good breakfast will help students
perform to the best of their ability! They should eat a healthy
breakfast the morning of the test (and every day!)

Get a Good Nights sleep!
A good nights sleep is always important - make sure students are
getting enough rest each night.

listen, listen, listen!
Many directions will be given before the test begins. These
directions are meant to help the student be successful! In order
for the directions to be helpful, the student needs to listen and
follow directions carefully!

be here!
Please do everything in your power to avoid scheduling
appointments during testing weeks! It is important that students
are here during our testing weeks to minimize the need for
make-up testing times!

stay positive!
Standardized tests like the IOWA are designed to help schools
measure student and school progress. They are a diagnostic tool
meant to help many different people. They are a chance to show
off what you know! Do your best to stay positive during these
testing weeks!

Jean Day for Pennies for Playground & Food Bank Friday, September 26:
On Friday, September 26, students & staff may wear jeans along with a school appropriate casual top
of their choice. You may also wear: Spirit Wear or an 8
th
grade shirt. In order to participate, students
must bring a $1.00 donation to benefit the Pennies for Playground Restoration Drive AND an item for
the Food Bank.
Since Preschool children do not wear a uniform they may also participate in a Food Bank offering,
(optional), by bringing in a food item needed below (you do not need to pay the $1.00).
Even though our loan has been paid off, we are still saving money to replenish mulch for the
playground area.
The Food Bank items that are requested: Boxed Potatoes, Boxed Cereal, Coffee, Hamburger Helper,

Can You Please Help?
The school office is looking for parent(s) volunteers that can help them
with the Labels for Education program.
Campbell Soups have been supporting schools nationwide for the past
38 years, and we would like for them to continue to help St. Mary
School.
Its simple & easy, and the best part is that our school could receive
FREE educational, athletic and/or art supplies just for clipping the
Labels for Education tabs.
Remember, any volunteer time will go towards your required service
hours for the school year, and you can even assist from the comfort of
your own home.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Heggie in the
school office at [email protected] or stop by and visit her to
discuss.
ITS BACK!
SAVE YOUR CANS & BOTTLES and BRING
THEM TO ST. MARY SCHOOL
The PTO bottle drive is in full swing and we
appreciate your continued participation. Please
bring your cans & bottles (cans & bottles only
please) that have been accumulating in your
garage and leave them at St. Mary School. We
will be more than happy to take care of them for
you.
There is a large green container marked Bottle
Drive in the back of the school, and all proceeds
will benefit Pennies for Playground - Restoration.
This year we need to replenish the mulch, and all
proceeds will be used for that. Tell your family,
friends and even neighbors and spread the news.
Our bottle drive will continue through the end of
the school year.
If you have any questions, please email PTO
Secretary, Maureen Brinker, at
[email protected]. Thank you for your
continued cooperation.
Do you want a Free St. Mary Catholic School window
cling for your car?
Now is the time to promote our wonderful school with the
new and improved car window cling that mounts on your
vehicles back window.
It measures about 5 in diameter and is a great way to let
others know about our school and your St. Mary Rocket
pride. It is yellow & black, (our school colors), with our
Rocket logo.
The PTO is offering (1) free window cling per St. Mary
family; and if you would like additional ones they are
available for purchase at $5.00/piece.
If you are interested in obtaining one (or more), please
contact Cindy Majlinger at [email protected].

Dear Parents of St. Mary School:
The PTO would like to remind you that the Box Top collection
program helps our students of the school out tremendously. There are
many ways to accumulate them (shown below).
We would like to welcome Tonya Robinson as our chairperson for the Box Top program. Our fall
collection month will begin October 1-31, so continue to save those Box Tops and turn them into
your childs teacher during the month of October. Please continue to ask friends, grandparents,
relatives & neighbors to clip and collect Box Tops for St. Mary Catholic School. We earned over
$1,900.00 last school year, and would like to surpass that figure this year.
Here are some ways you can earn Box Top points for St. Mary Catholic School:
Clip:
Clip the Box Top from hundreds of participating products and send them to school in an envelope
marked PTO Box Tops or save up for our Fall/Spring program. Each top is worth $0.10 when the
school redeems them.

Up to 15% of your qualifying purchase total is automatically donated to our school, at no additional cost
to you. Plus, you will get exclusive Box Tops deals and discounts. Search for our school by entering
zip code 48173.

Police Advise Schools About
Scholastic Scam
SEPTEMBER 22, 2014 BY JOHN
Police are advising schools across the community to be cautious of a Scholastic scam. According to
reports, some central Missouri schools have been receiving bills for the popular student fund raising
program from a company claiming to be Scholastic school supply. However, upon review of the bills
educators have discovered the charges were for items never order by students or school
representatives. The actual Scholastic company has announced that the other business is using their
name and trademark without their approval.
BBB Scam Alert: Scholastic Supply Scam
September 06, 2014
START INDEX CONTENT
Perfectly timed for the back to school frenzy, on August 20
th
, 2014 The Better
Business Bureau Serving Southern Nevada received its first complaint against Scholastic School Supply,
soon after noticing a severe influx in complaints regarding the business. The tactics employed by the
company are similar to the well-known Yellow Pages Scam, a business to business operation that
surfaced in 2013, and bilked more than $14 million from small businesses and churches before being
halted at the request of the Federal Trade Commission.
Consumers reaching out to the BBB allege that the operation is sending false invoices to schools and
school districts throughout the country in the amount of $647.50 for a bulk purchase of text books that
were never requested or received. The only contact information available on the invoices is an email
address which consumers report does not respond to messages, a phone number which routes to a
series of voice mail boxes, and mail drop addresses in either Sewell, New Jersey or Las Vegas, Nevada.
Although the entity lists addresses in New Jersey and Nevada on its invoicing, the BBB has been unable
to locate any corporation filings, business licensing, or otherwise required business entity documentation
for it in either state to substantiate a physical location.
As of September 5, 2014 The BBB Serving Southern Nevada has received a total of 51 complaints from
consumers located in 22 states throughout the country, as well as 2,303 inquiries regarding this scam
operation. With numbers continuing to rise in increments of as many as 15 complaints a day, schools are
urged to not pay the invoice, but instead to contact the Federal Trade Commission at (877)
382-4357 www.ftc.gov, the local Postal Inspectors, or Nevada State Bureau of Consumer Protection at
(702) 486-3132 www.ag.nv.gov.

UPDATE: BBB has recently been notified that a phishing scam involving the fake Scholastic, directed to
school districts has been circulating. The email requests the recipient to click on a link to complete a
survey and claims to reward the first 50 respondents with a $100 gift card upon completion. After
contacting Scholastic, Inc., they confirmed it did not originate from them. If you receive this email do not
click on the links. If you have clicked on the link, run a virus scan immediately.
