STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing
an activity but in doing it.” I feel I go by this way quoted by Greg Anderson
and it has also proved right in my life. My technical journey is analogous to
this quote but the point is I have not yet reached a destination and I truly
feel the joy of learning. This long journey starts right from my primary school
and is now halted in a station waiting for an apt train to continue. I, now an
aspirant of graduate in computer networks, started this travel long back
which dates to my early schooling and took a very meaningful and sensible
path tasting many flavors of computer science and liked in them this field
which interests me more. Having enough experience in my under graduation
to learn further, I am now in an alacrity to learn and work out new things.

I have passion for computers right from my childhood. My school was

one among the very few which had computer classes right from standard
one where my path to the journey of computers started with logo. The FD
command I used there still forwards me through this technical journey. My
parents were also eager to give me computer education at a very young age.
I joined courses for MS office, C, C++, and UNIX, which were new to my
country then, during my intermediate school itself. When I was given a
chance to select a subject of study in my high school, I picked computer
science which later drove me to opt for information technology as my under
graduate study.

My four years of education at SASTRA as an information technology

student gave me multitudinous options in the field. To truly know my interest
I spent lot of time working in variety of fields taking different roles as a
programmer, designer, organizer, ambassador and a charismatic leader. My
participation in online competitions like “IBM’s The Great mind challenge”
and “Microsoft’s Student2Business” for developing web applications in many
platforms gave me insight about computer applications, various technologies
and most importantly gave idea about the web architecture which in fact
made me to gain interest in the field of computer networks. I in my lab
during the leisure hours used to make games in java applets and was once
making a game of chess. Initially I was thinking of adding Artificial
Intelligence then wished that it would be interesting if it was a two player
game and that is how my interest in the networks field accelerated. I have
taken few seminars on networking and related topics during my third year
for my association, SCANIT. Even when I was selected as a member of
“multimedia club” in my college I was dealing with network and multiplayer
gaming. I also took my network courses in my university seriously. I have
won first place in “web designing” in a technical symposium conducted by
Thyagaraja college of engineering.

I got selected as the MICROSOFT STUDENT PARTNER of my

university when I was in my third year. It gave me a lot of scope and chance
to unravel more technologies. This made me a better organizer and gave
better opportunities to learn technologies. I even attended all India Microsoft
student partner meet where I shared my knowledge with my counterparts. I
have presented a paper in my university for DAKSH 09 a national level
technical symposium on “A cryptographic technique using neural networks”
which was focused on network security. Additionally I have done implant
training in JAVA at Cosmo soft Technologies during June 2008.

The journey further accelerated when I got selected as the Chairman

of SCANIT in my final year where I found myself as a leader and organized
many events, technical sessions, tests and classes for my department
students. The best instance I could show towards my interest is in my
selection of project domain. I selected one of the latest topics in networking,
wireless sensor networks. The project is simulation of a routing algorithm
that I designed and a mobile ad hoc application based on it. I also gained the
knowledge of working in simulators like NS2, Sinalgo which will help me in
my project. During my course I have worked in languages like C, C++, C#,
JAVA, HTML, XML, SQL, PHP, ASP.NET and JSP. I am comfortable in working in
platforms such as .NET, JAVA and PHP for web application. I can also write
network programs in JAVA.

I can assure you that I will be a perfect aid for the projects your school
undertakes and I would work with diligence and obedience. I have few
instances in my university where I was given confident roles in handling
information systems. We have a job portal, a web application for managing
the resumes and campus recruitment, in my university which is presently
managed by me along with another student. Also I have created a staff
feedback information system where the feedback about the staff can be
entered online and the administrator can view various reports from it.

After gaining such an interest and experience in my undergraduate

study I definitely can’t stop my journey. I wish it continues more vigorously in
my graduate study as my interest has got focused now. I have no doubt that
your university is the most appropriate one for me, since it provides a unique
mix of educational advantages. After completing an MS degree, I aim to
continue with my studies and ultimately complete a PhD because two years
is scarcely enough time to satisfy my insatiable appetite to keep learning.
Once I finish a doctoral degree, I intend to remain in academia, so that I can
add to the body of research in design and accomplish pioneering work in the
field. Based on my aptitude and personal assessment of my abilities, I am
confident of being able to excel in my studies at your university. My
experiences combined with my determination and excellent direction of the
faculty at your university will see me through the toughest of challenges. I
very sincerely look forward to being a part of your institution.
