MARCH DEAF CLUB

On Friday February 7
th
2014 we had a lot of people come to play Crazy putting.
John Uren organized it and brought two different crazy putting games. Both games
had to be played to get the highest points to win. Michael Manchett was the
winner. Thanks to John Uren. To celebrate St. Valentines night we had a small
party. Also our club gave Ann Ratcliffe a 70
th
birthday cake for February 8
th
. We
cut and ate two different cakes in one evening. See photo of Ann We had to wear
coats because the central heating had broken down in the hall but no-one
complained.
On Friday March 7
th
2014 as I unlocked the front door of St Peters Hall I was
surprised to see the hall had been decorated in a nice bright colour. The heating
had been fixed and new flooring laid.(see photo N0 4). Artist Jamie McCulloughs
parents brought some of his work to display in a Fantasy Art Exhibition. He has
usher syndrome. His communicator guide is Emma Burrow. Using sign language
he spoke about his life and told how he creates pictures by computer. His pictures
were beautiful and he sold some on the night. It was a good evening.

Peterborough Deaf Drop in
In January, the weather
became wetter with sudden
outbursts of rain, breaking
records in parts of the UK,
causing the deaf drop in to
be very quiet.
In February, We had 2
people from Comic Relief
visited us to see how the
deaf people need Advocacy service for D/deaf people
in Peterborough. Also, on the 11
th
of February we
had a delicious meal at Kaimas Lithuania Restaurant. Thanks to Mareks and
Vladimirs who arranged this wonderful night and gave a presentation so we
learned many things about their country as well as their custom. It was a
wonderful night.
In March, Jason Sharpes gave a presentation about
the Deaf Lobby day at the Westminster London on
the 17
th
March. Throughout the day over 250 people
from all the UK met their 45 MPS in Westminster
London. We all had a fantastic day and where
laughing hard on the improve comedy show on the
29
th
March. Thanks Jason Sharpe, Vladmirs
Krumins, Amanda Jane Richards, Daryl Jackson,
Mathew Gurney and David Sand we had a fantastic
night. Special CDA sponsored the Hall at the Key
Theatre for our great evening.

Attendance for this group was disappointing as just over ten people regularly
attended this monthly group. We hope to arrange an outing for this group to go

later this year to Woburn Safari Park later this year. Like all of our other drop-ins,
we have Support workers available for Deaf People.
We have agreed with Fire Station in Cambridge that Deaf people can visit at their

Fenland Deaf Drop-in
Christine Tarrant is back as Co-ordinator for this Drop-in as Michael Pape had

April due to lot of people being away for Easter. Ruth Godden came to give a talk
about CDAs new services that started from 1

April. I am doing this report
because Christine is busy in getting everything ready for her and Michael Papes
big day on May 10

Editors article
I hope you all had a good Easter and I would like to apologise for the delay of
Spring Newsletter. I was hoping we would be able to release it before Easter but
that did not happened.
The staff at CDA Office had been really busy and we are all doing our best in
improving our standards now that we have got successful funding from
Cambridgeshire County Council. They have got a lot to do but we are getting
there. You will see all the
information at the back of
newsletter.
We are so pleased that the Improv
Comedy in Peterborough Key
Theatre was a great success and
CDA supported the group by
contributing the room hire of the
theatre. We even managed to raise
a collection of 79.61 for CDA which
is brilliant. Most of us went on to
Charters the pub on the boat and it
was wonderful to meet everyone
there, socially and relaxing. This is
what it is all about! Congratulations
to Jason Sharpe for playing a big
part and we are very happy to
support him.
Also we had Tenpin Bowling tournament which took place in Ely strikes on Sunday
early evening Feb 23
rd
. This was organised by Rebecca Andreo and she did a
brilliant job. About twenty five people turned up and we split into five groups of
four or five players each. The winner of the Man who got the highest points in total
of two games is Godfrey Palmer and the winner for Ladies is Ruth Godden. Both
were presented with a bowling trophy. Everybody enjoyed the tournament and a
lot of them have said they would like to do it again and big thanks once more to
Rebecca.
We would like to welcome Sarah Clark for joining CDA BSL Course as a Tutor. I
wish her all the best of luck. We have done a lot of Deaf Awareness training so far
this year which I think is very good.
Andy Palmer, very kindly is organising a Deaf film at Key Theatre in Peterborough
on June 10
th
for us and this should be very good. We all look forward to this
exciting night.
Also a trip to Fire Station in Cambridge on May 21
st
during Deaf Awareness week
should be worth visiting and another event booked on June 10
th
for DLA/Pip &
Benefit talk is a must to attend.

BSL Walk in Gazeley
The walk was organised by Ron Allen
and it took place on Sunday April 6
th
.
There were only five people, all deaf
and it took us nearly all day to
complete six miles in a beautiful
surrounding. We had two breaks, one
to eat our packed lunch in a beautiful
area and we really enjoyed the
countryside view. Our second break
was in a very posh pub where we all
enjoyed drinking a pint of beer. The
barmaid can sign in BSL and she was
so pleased to see all of us so she was
making most of the sign language in
front of all these wealthy snobby
people. Wow! We were letting them know how beautiful language BSL was!
Big thanks to Ron for the lovely day.

DEAF GREENBELT

Greenbelt is a Christian Arts Festival where there is music, drama, dance, talks,
things to look at and different kinds of Christian Worship all weekend. It has just
moved to Boughton House near Kettering so it is not too far away from us. It
starts on August 22nd and finishes on the 25th but you can just come for the day.
There is a shuttle bus from the middle of Kettering to the site if you come by bus
or train to Kettering. There is an interpreter team to make everything accessible
and if you want to come for the whole weekend the Deaf community campers
usually camp together in the same area. Huntingdon BSL cafe church group are
planning on organising a day trip on the Sunday.
