Questions 1-4: A golf club 1.01 m long completes a downswing in 0.25 s through a range
of 180. Assume a uniform angular velocity.

1. What is the average angular velocity of the club? (3pts)

2. What is the linear distance moved by the end of the club? (3pts)

3. What is the tangential velocity of the end of the club? (3pts)

4. What is the tangential acceleration of the end of the club? (3pts)

5. A baseball player is up at bat. With the bat angled 60 clockwise of forward and rotating
clockwise at 160/s, the player begins to accelerate the bat counterclockwise at a
constant 2300/s
2
. The ball arrives at the plate 300 ms later. At what angle is the bat
when the ball arrives at the plate? (6pts)

6. A slow-pitch softball player is pitching the ball by keeping her torso motionless and
rotating her right upper limb about her shoulder (see figure). She releases the ball when
her upper limb is angled 50 clockwise from forward. At the instant before she releases
the ball, her upper limb is rotating counterclockwise at 860/s and is accelerating
clockwise at 130/s
2
. Her upper limb has a length of 58 cm. What are the projection
speed and projection angle of the ball (i.e. the magnitude and direction of the balls
linear velocity at the instant after it is released)? (8pts)

7. Calculate the thigh and shank (lower leg) segment angles and the knee joint angle given
the following x-y coordinates (9pts):

x y
Hip 1.2675 0.8282
Knee 1.3288 0.5175
Ankle 1.3026 0.0938

8. During an elbow flexion exercise, the relative angle at the elbow is 22 at 0.3 s and 155
at 0.62 s. What is the angular velocity of the elbow? (4pts)

9. A cyclist completes 3.2 cycle revolutions in 1.4 s. What is the angular velocity in radians
per second? (4pts)

10. A cyclist approaches a curve traveling forward at 15.6 m/s. 50 m before entering the
turn, he begins to apply the brakes. Assume that he applies a constant pressure to the
brakes, resulting in a constant acceleration of the bicycle. When he releases the brakes,
2 m before entering the turn, he is traveling forward at 8.9 m/s. What were the
magnitude and direction of the linear acceleration produced by the brakes? (6pts)
