The policy of globalisation and liberalisation followed by the government has deregulated infrastructure, manufacturing and service sectors. This has improved the GDP growth rates along with efficient utilisation of resources, increasing productivity and income levels. The economic reforms have opened up the financial, banking, insurance and service sectors while many ambitious and prestigious projects are launched. All these have created tremendous new job opportunities at various levels including those in general management and engineering management areas. But the country has been experiencing a dearth of trained and efficient manpower to cater to the requirements of the economy. NICMAR, one of the industry driven research institutes in India, with its vast experience of about two decades, has earned a reputation and recognition as a prestigious Centre of Excellence in Management education. It has now taken initiative to bridge this gap and have set up the School of Management (NICMAR - SOM) with the vision to provide quality education, training, research, consultancy and Human Resource Development Services in Management. The NICMAR - SOM offers the following two-year full time programmes: 1) Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). 2) Post Graduate Diploma in Project Engineering and Management (PGD PEM) The objective of the programmes is to develop professional managers with the potential to manage domestic and global business in diverse fields. Curricular excellence has been built into the syllabus and campus life to this effect , to help the students metamorphose into being valuable assets to the organizations they would be working with, and also to address the larger needs of the community. EXPERT FACULTY
Faculty is the foundation on which the structure of NICMAR - SOM is designed to grow. Therefore careful attention is paid to attract the best talent from the academia as well as industry to teach various specialised subjects through core, permanent faculty, visiting experts and guest lecturers. PEDAGOGY NICMAR believes that the method of instruction for maximizing learning should vary from course to course, and therefore, uses a host of pedagogic approaches in different courses. Apart from classroom lectures, Case studies, group and individual exercises, class projects, and simulation of business environment are used in different courses. SUPPORTING STRUCTURE Computer Centres NICMAR campuses at Pune and Hyderabad maintain well equipped and modern computer centres. Each computer centre has sufficient number of computers of the latest technology. Internet and e-mail facilities are available at all locations. All important software packages of project management, estimating, quantity surveying, inventory control, accounting, personnel handling etc. are available at the Centres. The Computer Centres are headed by qualified and experienced staff and they are open about 16 hours a day.

LIBRARIES Each campus is equipped with a library. The main library is at the Pune campus. This is a specialized library on construction management & the construction industry, Project Management and general management. It holds a collection of over 8,000 books, documents and reference material. Library subscribes to all major technical and professional journals relevant to the mainline work of the Institute. The library provides text book services to students and research/reference support to faculty and scholars and useful information to engineering enterprises. It is fully computerized and staffed by professionally qualified and computer proficient librarians and documentalists. A system of common catalogue at Pune and Hyderabad is maintained and users can access all material at any location.
STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
NICMAR provides to students an opportunity for all round development through education and professional interaction with other management schools and project construction related visits and activities. They are encouraged to visit project sites, exhibitions and attend seminars related to their professional field. Famous national and international libraries are accessed to get update on latest development in the Project Management f i e l d .
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Provisions are made for extra-curricular activities of students. Some of the more important ones are mentioned below: - Well equipped facilities exits for indoor games, watching T.V., listening to music and for general reading and e-mail, Internet facilities are available at all campuses. - At Pune, the international sports stadium is just across the road from Campus and students can access swimming pools, gymnasia, field tracks and other facilities. - The students participate in the socio-cultural activities in the city and inter-collegiate competitors. This is encouraged. - Students also bring out in-house magazines, newsletters, and similar publications. - All students at NICMAR shall mandatory serve in either one of the community program related to the following categories. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this Programme is to train the minds of young and dynamic students and develop mature and responsible professional techno-managers with the potential to manage products/projects/services at home and globally, to assume responsibility in diverse fields and has following competencies: Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of corporate management. Proficiency in marketing, manufacturing, operations, information technology, finance, strategy, infrastructure projects, construction, and people management skills. Skills and techniques in managing products/projects/services in any business sector.
ELECTIVES
The programme offers electives from all major areas of management such as Marketing, Finance, Manufacturing & Operations, Human Resource Management, IT & Systems, Infrastructure, Projects, Construction and General Management.
ELIGIBILITY
Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university with at least 50 percent marks in qualifying exams. Preference will be given to those having work experience, and to candidates sponsored by their employers. Foreign candidates should possess qualifications considered equivalent by British Universities.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE
Selection of students is done by the Selection Committee. Admissions work is handled centrally at Pune. Those interested in admission to the Programme should submit applications in the prescribed forms to the Dy. Registrar (Acad.), NICMAR Pune along with the required documents within the specified dates. The documents should be complete in all respects. All enclosures must be submitted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. All applications for admission are scrutinized and eligibility established on the basis of documents submitted.

All eligible candidates are invited to undergo the selection procedure which comprises the following: . Written Test Test Covers Analytical, Quantitative and Psychological Abilities and i English Language OR Valid MAT/GATE/XAT/ATMA/CAT/GMAT scores taken after January 1, 2004, will be acceptable. i i . Group Discussion (GD) i i i . Personal Interview (PI) The common pool Merit List is drawn on the basis of performance in written test / Score, GD, PI and AR (Rating of Applications of candidates). All competing candidates appear in this Merit List in the order of their respective merit. Admission letters are issued in the serial order of the Merit List. The allotment will be done at the sole discretion of the Selection Committee. Candidates should provide 2 days for undergoing the selection procedure. They must make their own travel and living arrangements.

The following conditions apply to payment of fees and other dues. i . i i . Fees once paid non-refundable and non-transferable. The deposit will stand forfeited if a student, after having been enrolled, leaves studies in-between for any reason whatsoever or fails to complete the studies successfully. i i i . Fees are payable by Demand Draft drawn in favour of NICMAR SOM and payable at a Pune local bank, personal cheques and cash are not accepted. i v . The fees and other dues payable at the time of admission are mentioned in the Admission Letter itself. v . The Fees are payable as per the schedule given. Late fee @Rs.100 for every day of delay from the stipulated date will be levied upto 10 days and thereafter the studentship may be cancelled. Hostel and mess fees are additional. v i . The above fee includes a cost of 2 NICMAR T-Shirts and one tie for both men and women.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The Institute offers merit scholarship which is granted on the basis of academic performance of the candidate in each academic term. The Institute assists students who seek study loans from banks. Companies that accept students for summer training invariably offer allowances stipends during training period.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
i. Course Work The two-year programme of PGDM has been divided in to Seven Trimesters. Each Trimester is about 13 weeks. There are 3 Trimesters and a foundation programme in the first year. Students learn the very basics of management skills, attitude and behaviour etc. Then the students move to a specific industry for a period of 8-10 weeks to have hands on training (Summer Training) to test the academic knowledge that they have gained over a period of last 39 weeks during the Trimester IV. In the second year, the students get acquainted with host of electives in addition to few compulsory subjects. The list of tentative courses to be offered is given below in Table 1. Beginning of each Trimester the schedule of actual Courses shall be announced. ii.Computer Practice Workshop (CPW) A techno-manager should be proficient in computer application to all aspects of his/ her work. He/she should be able to use project management software packages for project planning, scheduling, monitoring and control and other packages for estimating, accounting, stores management, personnel management and or generating outputs for a variety of purposes. He/she should be comfortable with Internet and multi-media systems. Every student spends at least 6 hours per week (most spend many more hours) in the Computer Centre where he/she gets hands on experience of all aforesaid types. Skilful and creative application of tools and techniques of information technology and use of computers in the practice of his/her profession is the trade mark of a NICMAR-SOM graduate. iii.Summer Training As a part of the curricula each student has to undergo a supervised field training with a reputed management firm. During this period they can do their project work which they have to select a live problem of the concerned company/industry and get it approved from the institute. Therefore, the summer work will make students research an applied research in the area of management. Organisations for practical training are carefully selected. The host organisation is expected to nominate a senior officer to supervise the students work, be willing to pay a stipend to the student and hopefully may offer employment to the student trained by it. What the Institute looks for is meaningful and supervised work experience for the student. Sponsored students may be allowed to do training in their own organizations. Students are expected to arrange their Summer Training on their own. i v . Industry Interface Plan
NICMAR-SOM will ensure a healthy input of industry interface for its students over the two years of training here. These will be in the following categories. Weekly Guest Lecture Workshops by experts in specific areas. An event such like an international level Seminar/Conference Tie-up with industrial bodies such as the CII, FICCI and some international Chambers of Commerce for regular interaction with the students and faculty, through industrial visits, lectures, participation in students seminars etc. v . ASSESSMENT
Assessment of students performance is done as per Guideline of Academic Administration which is a printed booklet and available to all on request. The NICMAR learning system de-emphasizes lecturing, and examination system. Class work comprises 41 percent of total inputs. Examinations have only 43 percent weightage: Concurrent Internal Assessment makes up rest of 57 percent. A student may pass all examinations and yet may fail to qualify as Pass. High score in examinations does not necessarily get higher GPA. It is an all-rounder, team player person with analytical mind and proficiency in relevant skills who is likely to do better. . Weightages i The curricula of PGDM comprises course work and summer training. Forty percent of the course work is Subject to Concurrent Internal Assessment (CIA). Examinations are held for 60 percent of course work.
Method Examination
i i . Examinations The Term-end examinations is of 60 marks (Each paper) and will be of two hour duration. The Term-end examination has the following components. . Essay type questions. i i i . Structured or short answer questions. i i i . Questions involving computations and derivations. It is to be noted that the Term-end examination covers the entire syllabus of the courses taught during the Term and also any additional information given by the teacher during lectures. iii.Concurrent Internal Assessment Concurrent Internal Assessment (CIA) is for 40 percent marks out of a total of 100 allotted for each course. The student must secure a minimum of 50 marks in a course for passing. The Concurrent Internal Assessment is done on a continuous basis by the teacher of the course concerned. The internal assessment is based on (i) one hour midterm exami9
nation, (ii) an essay type assignment on a topic assigned by the course teacher, (iii) the students overall performance in the class, and (v) half an hour presentation in the class on a selected and relevant topic. The teacher concerned will announce the results of internal assessment in the class so that the students are aware of their performance. The answer books of mid-Term tests are returned to a student so that he can verify and convince himself of the correctness of the assessment done by the teacher. The essay assignment is also returned to the student after correction and evaluation by the teacher. This enables the student to be aware of his performance on an ongoing basis. In case performance is below standard, the student can request the teacher for a Make up Test and if his marks in the Make-up test are more, they will replace the earlier marks to improve the overall grade. i v . Joint Assessment
Students Project work are subject to Joint Assessment by the Project Guide and an External Expert appointed for the purpose. The internship is also assessed jointly by the Company Supervisor of the student and the Faculty Supervisor, both nominated prior to the start of Summer Training. v . Viva Voce The Viva Voce may be held for all PGDM students on Completion of all requirements of the Programme. A panel of experts is especially constituted for the purpose. vi.Failure Cases NICMARs Post Graduate Diplomas are high profile Programmes to which students of a high calibre are admitted through a process of rigorous evaluation of their competence. It is therefore, expected that no student will fail in any subject. However, if any student fails to obtain minimum passing marks in any subject, his overall result is withheld. Such a student will have to take examination by paying reexams fees of Rs.500/- per subject along with the next batch and obtain the minimum passing marks so as to enable him to qualify for the Diploma. vii.Grading System Evaluation will be on Trimester basis. At the end of every Trimester, a Trimester Performance Index (TPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) will be calculated. The CPI at the end of any Trimester must not fall below 6.0. A student is permitted to accumulate a maximum of two failed grades throughout the course. In order to pass the Programme a student should clear all F grades. AWARD
Students who are assessed to have met all the academic requirements successfully are eligible to receive their Diplomas.

In order to quality for the Award, the student should meet successfully the following requirements : i. Minimum prescribed attendance of 80 percent in each course. ii. Minimum prescribed grades in each course. iii. Satisfactory completion of Summer Training. i v . Passing the final viva voce. v. No dues payable certificate from the Institute concerned.
PLACEMENT / JOBS
As mentioned earlier, NICMAR is the best platform for the students to get into reputed companies and hold responsible positions. NICMAR has a 100percent placement record and all graduating students found good jobs before leaving the campus. Campus interviews are held at all campuses. Reputed companies are invited to campuses and select their future managers. The institute takes no responsibility of finding jobs for students.
