About the Institute

The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad was established in 1999, as a centre of
excellence in Information Technology and allied areas. The Institute was conferred the “The Deemed
University” status by Government of India in the year 2000. The Institute thus became empowered to have a
perpetual seal to award degree subsequent to the conduct of its own examinations. IIIT-A has been conceived
with the ambitious objectives of developing professional expertise and skilled manpower in Information
Technology (IT) and related areas. This has enabled the country to exploit efficiently emerging opportunities to
meet economic challenges being thrown up by the rapid global IT revolution that has influenced virtually every
area of development and social activity. As an apex nucleating institute in the area of IT, the establishment of
IIIT-A, is a major step of Govt. of India towards strengthening the indigenous capability necessary for exploiting
profitability and harnessing multi-dimensional facets of IT at all levels, and attaining expertise to enable the
country to emerge as a leading player in the global arena.

Each academic year consists of two semesters and training. While the education system is broadly organized on
the pattern of other IIT’s, a Relative Grading System pattern with credits allotted for each course, is followed by
End Semester Examinations. Continuous evaluation of students performance also provides students the desired
flexibility to choose courses as per their own interests. Each course is assigned specified credits, depending upon
its relative importance in the field of Information Technology. Class contact hours per week are also decided
based on it. To boost creativity in students, mini and major projects, in their chosen fields of interest, form an
integrated part of the course curriculum at the Institute. Normally one-theory course credit hour is of 15 hours of
lectures in one semester, and one laboratory course credit hour is of 30 hours of laboratory work.

Our, foreign collaborations speak volumes about the Institute’s efforts in striving for establishment of worldwide
linkages. Currently an Indo-Russian Center for Biotechnology with thrust area as Bio-informatics has become
operational while an Indo-US facility for Universal Digital Library has been setup with active collaboration with
Carnegie Mellon University, USA. Several other sponsored projects are also in the pipeline, which shall further
assist IIIT-Allahabad in being recognized as a hub of activity for all persons in the field of IT and CSE. The
institution has also taken a lead in the NME & IT/ITES initiatives of the nation. Currently, IIIT-A, has taken up a
project on "Establishing of North Zone Resource Center for generation of Contents, Mentors / Teachers etc. by
conducting specialized short term HRD courses for IT / ITES sector", is also a contributing partner in “National
Education Mission” of Govt. of India.

MS in Cyber Law & Information Security

Perspective:
The advent of Internet and information technology has given new dimensions to the present world. It is no
longer the same place for individuals and corporation presenting forth a transformed society. This, transformed
world is now known as the cyber world, where the active players are lawmakers, technology builders and
techno managers. Law enforcement agencies are –facing significant issues like new Policies, Acts and its
enforcements beyond the physical safety of citizen, whose foundation was laid for the closed economic
conditions. The use and misuse of cyber space requires law enforcement to take a proactive role in providing
cyber safety. Cyber law has come to the rescue of such persons who are victim of cyber crime, i.e. crime
perpetrated through the electronic and communication means. Moreover, the biggest contribution of cyber law
has been in validation and protection of electronic commerce.

Synergistic Approach:
The requirement at the either ends of Cyber Law & Information Security were to be adequately handled by the
provision of synthesis of these two areas interest namely Cyber Law & Information Security. The discipline of
cyber law covers such diverse issues such as copyrights, trademarks, intellectual property, defamation, privacy,
software privacy, legal drafting and a variety of other related matters. Information security, the other hand, is
protection of information against unauthorized disclosure, transfer, modification or destruction, whether
accidental or intentional. To keep information secure in the current global scenario a gamut of security
practices along with its proper implementation and enforcement both at the system level and the judicial
domain are needed. This course covers the managerial technical aspects of security. Students explore
information security with real world content and issues facing today’s businesses. Course encompasses all
such aspects and they are an integral part of our course.

In the year 2004, considering the urgency to develop techno – legal professionals in the field of Cyber Law and
Information Security and acting on proactive lines, IIIT, Allahabad initiated a one year Diploma Program on
the subject. The eligibility criterion for admission was made strictly restricted to B.Tech, B.E., Post Graduate
or LL.B. where the aspirants were to be scrutinized through a three stage process comprising of application
screening, written test and interview. As the first batch was about to pass out from the Institute, it was realized
that the duration of one year for the course was not adequate to cover all the relevant topics in the field of
Cyber Law and Information Security. As a consequence, the one year Diploma on Cyber Law and Information
Security was introduced to two year Masters Program. With the passage of time the Masters Program on Cyber
Law and Information Security gained immense popularity among various sectors. In the year 2006, it was
decided that the Masters Program on Cyber Law and Information Security be elevated to the status of MS in
Cyber Law and Information Security and bring at par with international standards considering the importance
and exigency of the subject. Currently, the second and third batches are studying in the campus of IIIT,
Allahabad.
