One-day event provides services to east county homeless

INFORMATION: 925-313-7700 or email [email protected] WHAT: Homeless Connect WHEN: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Oct. 9 WHERE: Antioch Fairgrounds WHO: Contra Costa Countys Homeless Services Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a one-day, one-stop event that provides immediate healthcare, social services and housing resources to persons experiencing homelessness in Contra Costa County. The county rotates this event between east, west and central county, said Supervisor Federal Glover. It is east countys turn this year and it will be held at the Antioch Fairgrounds on Oct. 9. In the homeless count held earlier this year, Contra Costa had about 4,000 homeless individuals at any one time -- with a great number residing in east county, said Glover. PHC events are a national and international phenomenon that began nearly a decade ago in San Francisco. Now, over 200 communities participate in Project Homeless Connects throughout the United States, Australia, and Canada. In the past, Project Homeless Connect provided dental work, pet vaccinations, free eyeglasses, legal advice, clothing, shoes, haircuts, identification cards and a hot meal. To provide these services, the County Homeless Program partners with over 250 services providers, businesses and community volunteers to provide 1000 participants with free services that include medical care, substance abuse and mental health counseling, family services, shelter, legal assistance, state-issued identification cards and haircuts. The homeless are not strangers to our community, said Glover, most of them are from the area. Some are students attending school every day who sleep in a car with the rest of their family. Other individuals move from one friends couch to another friends couch. This event gives them a chance to receive services and aid that they do without the rest of the year, he said.
