A Message from Jumaane
Dear Friends,
As we enter the summer months, I would like to congratulate all of our students on another successful year! We have so much to be proud of thanks to their continued development and growing sense of civic duty, as exemplified by the young people that joined us to march against violence in our community several weeks ago; you can see the photo below to get a sense of how inspiring the event was for everyone.
This past Thursday, I traveled to Washington, DC with colleagues from city and state government to advise members of Congress and the Department of Justice on our concerns with the NYPD stop, question and frisk policy. I am pleased to report it was a successful day of advocacy, and I am more optimistic than ever at our prospects for better policing and safer streets for all New Yorkers. On May 17th, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams marched with hundreds of local youth through the streets of East Flatbush for the second annual Not in My Hood March and Resource Fair, to take a stand against gun violence.

Update from City Hall

Its budget season at City Hall! Council Member Williams has attended a series of executive budget hearings over the last few weeks, asking tough questions to agency commissioners about how their proposed spending and cuts will impact the 45th District. As always, his goal is to make our community a safe place for young people to learn and grow. That is why Council Member Williams is on the record that he will not vote for this years budget unless serious restorations are made to our youth programming. Thousands of slots have been cut from Out of School Time and child care, and Beacon schools are being slashed across the city. We know how pivotal these programs are to working families and how cutting them is both a public safety hazard and a danger to our childrens futures.

On April 28th, Council Member Williams practiced self-defense techniques at his Flatbush Community Health Fair at the Flatbush YMCA.
Council Member Williams is also committed to preserving funding for senior services. He has been visiting centers around the district to ensure he has the best understanding of what they need to live their best lives.

1) What work do you do in the 45th? My work in the 45th District consists of managing the daily operations of Community Board 17, identifying community needs as part of the Citys budget process and working with government agencies to improve the delivery of services to residents of the district. 2) Why did you decide to get involved in the community?
On May 15th, Council Member Williams celebrated his birthday at Crystal Manor with family, friends and a cake depicting him as a New York Knick occupying the Garden.
My passion for community service developed back in Guyana. I remember accompanying my Dad to political events back in Guyana and even then, I understood the benefits residents could derive from getting involved in their community. 3) Tell me a valuable experience you had in your service. While there are many, my constant is when someone calls the office or sends a Thank You letter expressing how my assistance made a difference in their lives. That is the most fulfilled feeling. 4) How can people get involved?
People can get involved by becoming members of their community boards, or members of the various committees on the board. Additionally, they could organize and form community groups and become involved with community organizations that address the needs of the community.

GET ACTIVE!
This Fathers Day, help us make a difference in New York City so we can reform stop, question and frisk once and for all. On Sunday, June 17 th, meet us at 1:00 PM at 110th Street, east of Fifth Avenue, for a silent march to end racial profiling. We are expecting tens of thousands to come out, from New York City and beyond, to send a strong statement of our unity and strength on this crucial public safety issue. This is being organized by a coalition of civil rights, faith, labor and community groups, including 1199 SEIU, NAN and the NAACP. The march is expected to step off at 3:00 PM. I hope you will march with me to help us ensure better policing and safer streets for all New Yorkers!
Neighborhood Highlights
On May18th, Council Member Williams presented proclamations to the boys and girls basketball teams at Nazareth Regional High School in honor of their championship seasons, as well as for their role in helping to save the institution from closure. On May 21st, in response to heavy rains that affected I.S. 285 and other parts of the 45th District, Council Member Williams asked the Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Protection to work together on a long-term solution to repeated flooding. On June 5th, Council Member Williams co-sponsored a free afternoon concert in Marine Park for seniors and families, in conjunction with Council Member Lew Fidler, the Department of Aging, the Department of Parks and Recreation and Millennium Development Corporation.
