"The final acceptance of a measurement system should not come down to a single set of indices. The performance of the measurement system should also be reviewed using graphical analyses." For measurement systems whose purpose is to analyze a process, general rules of thumb are: Acceptability Criteria for %R&R (% of Total Variation and % of Tolerance) Under 10% - acceptable system - Under 5% preferred 10% to 30% - may be acceptable depending on importance of the application, cost of the system, cost of repair, etc Over 30% - considered not acceptable - every effort should be made to improve the system Based on the AIAG Measurement Systems Analysis Reference Manual -- Call 810-358-3570 to order.

This plot will help identify systematic appraiser bias -each set of black lines should have roughly the same shape

This chart is used to determine if enough part-to-part variation has been observed to estimate Part Variation To be an acceptable measure of Part Variation, 50% of the trial averages should fall outside the control limits This line is identical to the solid black line in the above chart If too few of the averages fall outside the control limits the parts selected here are too similar. Rerun analysis with different, more heterogeneous, parts

For an adequate measurement system, at least 50% of averages should fall outside control limits. Because 0% of averages are outside control limits, the system is NOT adequate to detect part variation.
