Kernels pound Peoria 11-2

The Kernels set season-highs in runs (11) & hits (17) in a 9-run win at Peoria on Saturday. The Kernels avoided the sweep by scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning & 5 runs in the 4th inning.

PEORIA, Ill. The Kernels set season highs in runs and hits in a 11-2 pounding of the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday afternoon. The kernels collected 17 hits. The Kernels scored all runs in the 1st and 4th innings to cruise to the victory. With the win the Kernels avoided the sweep. The Kernels jumped on Peoria with six runs in the 1st inning to take a 6-0 lead as 12 hitters came to the plate. All 5 hits in the inning were singles and all resulted in runs batted in. Jorge Polanco, Travis Harrison, Drew Leachman, Jhonatan Arias, and Niko Goodrum collected the hits. Romy Jimenez added a RBI sacrifice fly to score the other run. The Chiefs plated a run in the bottom of the 3 rd inning, but the Kernels tallied five runs in the top of the 4 th inning to nearly double their lead to 11-1. With the bases loaded Drew Leachman lined a single to score Dalton Hicks. Romy Jimenez then cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double that just snuck inside the 3rd base line and rolled to the corner. Jimenez later came home on Niko Goodrums RBI single. Mason Melotakis started for the Kernels and went 3.1 innings. He allowed 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 4. Steve Gruver (1-0) went 4.2 innings in relief for the win, allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking 0. Tyler Jones pitched the 9th inning, allowing 1 hit and 0 runs. Dail Villanueva (0-2) had a rough start for Peoria, going 0.2 inning and allowed 6 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 in the loss.
