The North Korean National Tae Kwon Do demo team made their third and final stop on the 2011
Goodwill Tour in Collingswood at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. Grand Master Ken MacKenzie of
MacKenzies Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do Institute in Voorhees had facilitated the trip for the
North Korean Tae Kwon Do demo team, a group of the 14 best karate experts from the embattled
country. MacKenzie said the demo team practices 12 hours a day, 365 days out of the year.

The Voorhees Township Com-
mittee voted in favor of a $25.8
million budget for 2011.
The recent vote was 4-1 with
Committee Member Michael
Friedman casting the lone dis-
senting vote.
Mayor Michael Mignogna said
the budget is $1,208,031 below the
2 percent tax cap levy instituted
by Gov. Christie.
The average home in Voorhees
is assessed at $335,930. This year,
the local tax for such a home will
decrease by $10.66.
Im very proud of a lot of the
work our committee has done
this year with the budget to rein
in spending, Friedman said, not-
ing this is the first time in 10
years that there is no tax in-
crease.
I cannot vote for a budget that
allots approximately $100,000 to
pay for the health benefits of
committee members, he said.
Friedman said he pledged when
he ran he would return his por-
tion of the health benefits given
to him.
All the committee members
but Friedman were grandfa-
thered to receive health benefits
when Christie signed into law
that part-time elected officials
could not receive health benefits.
In this economy, where people
are tightening their belts and are
struggling to pay for their own
health care, I think its totally un-
fair and improper for residents to
be paying for health care benefits
for quarter-time officials who are
supposed to be giving of their
time, Friedman said.
And what does the mayor think
about Friedmans comments?
Weve discussed the issue and
weve determined that its really
an individuals choice to accept
[health benefits] or not,
Mignogna said, noting Friedman
is not eligible for benefits because
he was elected after the law took
effect.
The mayor also said he has
some medical issues and is con-
cerned that a different program
might view his condition as pre-
existing and not cover it at all.
Im very pleased with our
budget, Mignogna said. Weve
worked hard over the last five or
six years to stabilize our tax situ-
ation.
He noted there are now 25
fewer township staff members
than in 2006. Voorhees is now en-
gaged in a number of shared
service programs with Cherry
Hill and six other municipalities
for trash disposal, the biggest one

The Voorhees Sun
Camden County recently re-
leased a seven page proposal de-
tailing the possible plans, bene-
fits, and structures for a Camden
County wide police force to repre-
sentatives from municipalities
throughout the county.
Among the seven-page docu-
ment were several reasons as to
why municipalities in Camden
County should consider joining a
proposed countywide police force.
The document also provided
some details on how such a police
force would exist and operate.
A county police department
provides the opportunity to re-
duce the cost of police services to
taxpayers, putting more police of-
ficers on patrol, and streamlining
police services, the document
reads. To county residents, the
local division of the county police
department serving their com-
munities will look and operate
much like their existing police de-
partment and offer the same qual-
ity service. The difference is that
the CCPD will be more effective
and cost-efficient.
Included in the document are
several reported benefits the
county lists for a countywide
force:
n Mitigate police layoffs in
communities throughout the
county.
nCoordinated deployment and
administration of resources to re-
duce/eliminate redundant
staffing and administration.
nCreate consistent and realis-
tic work rules, reduce related
compensation and support costs.
n Increase patrol officers on
the street by eliminating redun-
dancy and sharing resources and
services.
nEconomies of scale and pool-
ing of resources provide opportu-
nities to use and share existing
equipment, saving on capital
costs for all participating munici-
palities, and gain cost savings
through shared purchasing and
procurement of supplies, equip-
ment, etc.

word document can be found at

For the fourth time, the
Voorhees Animal Orphanage will
raise funds by selling tickets to an
upcoming Camden Riversharks
game.
We are hoping to raise at least
$1,500 from this event which will
go directly to our medical fund,
shelter events coordinator Chris-
tine Todd said.
Our medical fund helps with
heartworm treatment and any
surgeries that may be needed for
the animals at the animal orphan-
age.
Todd said the orphanage is
busy all year long.
There are so many people in
this economy who are unable to
care for or keep their animals,
she said. People just dont under-
stand the importance of spaying
and neutering your pets and the
lifetime commitment that entails
in owning a pet.
Todd said the orphanage will
always welcome those animals in
need of shelter.
She said the Riversharks sell
the tickets to the shelter for $5
and the orphanage will sell them
for $10.
Also, there will be animals at
the game that are up for adoption.
We will have some great dogs
attend this event, Todd said. Its
a great opportunity to stop by our
table to meet your new best
friend.
This is a great event for all
ages, she continued. Not only is
it an opportunity to raise funds
and showcase our dogs looking
for homes, we encourage every-
one to bring their dog, too.
It is one of several fund raisers
held by the shelter all year long.
In April was the 5th Annual
Wag n Walk dog walk fund rais-
er.
But the biggest event of the
year should be the 15th Annual
Woofstock Pet Festival which
will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10
at Connolly Park in Voorhees.
There will be more than 40 ven-
dors and rescue groups and over
2,000 supporters in attendance.
We have many former or-
phans support this event, and it is
nice to see how happy they are
with their new families, Todd
said.
The Voorhees Animal Orphan-
age is a non-profit organization.
Established in 1988, the
Voorhees Animal Orphanage
takes in nearly 1,500 animals a
year.
According to representatives,
the Animal Orphanage rescued
275 adoptable animals from high-
kill shelters along the east coast
in 2009.
The Riversharks vs. Road War-
riors game will be held Sunday,
June 26, at 1:05 p.m. at Campbells
Field, Camden. Tickets are $10.
For more information, contact
Todd at (609) 743-6444, or by e-mail
at [email protected].

The demo team displayed Hap

Not a crime
But sexting raises parenting questions
H
eres a statistic for you: Roughly one in five teens in-
cluding 11 percent of girls aged 13 to 16 have sent a
nude or semi-nude picture or video of themselves to
friends or posted one on a website.
That statement comes from a
press release from Assembly-
woman Pam Lampitt, who cites
a 2008 survey by the National
Campaign to Prevent Teen and
Unplanned Pregnancy. The ac-
tivity is called sexting.
Frankly, we are shocked.
The purpose of Lampitts press release was to announce that
her bill had unanimously passed the Assembly a bill that
would mean that kids who do this sort of thing receive intense
education instead of criminal prosecution.
Well, yeah, that makes sense. Kids do stupid things some-
times. Sexting doesnt necessarily make them kiddie pornogra-
phers or sexual predators.
Yet it seems that some overly zealous prosecutors in several
states have charged youngsters with crimes, including distribu-
tion of child pornography, according to Lampitts recent press
release. So, unfortunately, the new law is necessary.
Still, how many of you, as youngsters, OK, even as adults
(and, member of Congress, we are not talking to you), ever
thought about snapping a quick photo of your naked self and,
say, tacking it up to a telephone pole or dropping it into the mail
to a buddy? Zero?
This issue isnt about technology. Its about values, instilling
a sense of right and wrong in the young ones and, when they
screw up, punishing them so that they learn that doing stupid
things leads to consequences.
Sure. Pass the bill. But maybe there should be a parental edu-
cation element added to it.
If your kids dont know the dangers of sexting, it shouldnt
require state intervention to teach them.

On June 13, the Voorhees
Township Committee adopted
the 2011 Budget that calls for no
local tax increase. Over the last
few years, the Committee has
worked hard to control spending
while maintaining the high level
of municipal services our resi-
dents have come to expect and
deserve.
Voorhees Township has 25
fewer full-time employees than
in 2006. We now operate just as
efficiently with less people
through changes such as auto-
mated trash collection and the
reorganization of our planning,
zoning and construction offices.
We have joined with Camden
County and surrounding munic-
ipalities to work together to save
money through shared services
programs. We recently merged
our local dispatch into the coun-
ty system and work with the
county in the snow plowing of
roads. We have an agreement
with Cherry Hill and six other
municipalities for trash dispos-
al. It is the largest agreement for
trash disposal in South Jersey.
We also have an agreement with
Cherry Hill to share equipment
for sewer maintenance and re-
pair and a similar agreement
with Gibbsboro for leaf collec-
tion. Our Township Administra-
tor has monthly meetings with
the administrators from Cherry
Hill and Evesham to explore ad-
ditional ways to share services
and save money.

MAYORS MESSAGE
Working hard to save money
So lucky to live
in Voorhees
In general, children in Voorhees have a lot going
for them supportive families, great teachers, and
a safe community.
As an educator who has worked in major urban
areas, I cant help but compare this to the misery of
many poor kids Ive known. And after visiting a
great Pompeii exhibit at the Osage School, I again
realized my family was so lucky to live in
Voorhees.
At the same time, I couldnt help but ponder
Joanne Yatvins questions: How does it feel to be a
hungry child in a dilapidated school in a danger-
ous neighborhood with a teacher who (is required
to read) from a script? How much does a teenager
who has little hope of going to college or living the
American Dream care about handing in his home-
work or acing the big test? (Joanne Yatvin, past
president of the National Council of Teachers of
English).
After Osages Pompeii exhibit and Yatvins ques-
tions, I know I need to be more creative about help-
ing kids in need. Clearly, President Obama, Gov.
Christie, congressional Democrats and Republi-
cans, and the corporate charter school movement
know or care little about helping them.

John Mauer
June 15, 2011
Voorhees Township Public
Works Director John Maurer died
last week. For that reason the
Voorhees Public Works Depart-
ment was closed Thursday, June
16, so that employees could attend
funeral services. Mayor Michael
Mignogna said Maurer will be
missed.
John Maurer was a dedicated
employee of Voorhees Township
for over two decades, Mignogna
said. He was both passionate
about his job, yet one of the most
unassuming people Ive ever met.
John was the foundation of
our Public Works Department,
the mayor continued. Snow
plowing roads and leaf removal
only scratched the surface of his
responsibilities.
Mignogna said Maurer over-
saw the maintenance of township
open space parcels and made sure
the athletic fields were safe.
It was John who turned a for-
mer quarry into Connolly Park,
our community oasis and the
home of many township events,
Mignogna said. It is one of the
many legacies John leaves.
Voorhees is a better place because
of John Maurer and I am a better
man for knowing him.
Maurer, 58, struggled with can-
cer. The Shamong resident was
employed by Voorhees for 21
years.
The viewing was June 15 at the
Bradley Funeral Home in Marl-
ton and the funeral was June 16 at
Lord of Life Lutheran Church in
Tabernacle. Interment was at
Colestown Cemetery in Cherry
Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests donations to Lord of Life

The Committee has also
worked hard to bring new tax rev-
enue to the Township through the
sale of a new liquor license and
the construction of the Voorhees
Town Center and the new Virtua
Medical Campus. Voorhees has
joined the state program known
as Live Where You Work to en-
courage those who work in
Voorhees to live here. A partner-
ship has been formed between the
Economic Development Commit-
tee and the Voorhees Business As-
sociation to form the Business Re-
tention Task Force to help our
local businesses continue to
thrive. In spite of a decrease of
$100,000 in construction fees, our
budget in the amount of
$25,790,000 is $1,208,031 below the
2 percent tax levy cap instituted
by Governor Chris Christie. The
average home in Voorhees is as-
sessed at $335,930. This year, the
local tax for such a home will de-
crease by $10.66.
Summer Twilight Series
The first free show in the 2011
Summer Twilight Series is on
Thursday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. at
Connolly Park (rain date June 30)
and will feature the sounds of
Parrotbeach, the Jimmy Buffet
tribute band. Voorhees Township
brings a touch of the Florida
Keys to Connolly Park. Come out
and be a Parrot Head for the
night. Enjoy the Jimmy Buffett
style music and indulge in the
tropical lifestyle. Have a virgin
Margarita. The fun continues the
very next night at 7:30 p.m. when
a group of local talented artists
known as Cocktail Party Phe-
nomena perform some new musi-
cal sounds. The show includes a
full horn section and a mini-choir
of incredibly talented vocalists.
