County Protective Services Manager, Gerald Skibinsky said he had a chance to review new Alberta First Responder Radio Communications System (AFRACS) radio equipment that may be required in the future for area Emergency Response crews. I attended an AFRACS meeting in Red Deer and got to see some of the radios that were being replaced in the RCMP communication system, said Skibinsky. He forewarned council that the costs of the radio system are considerably higher than radios currently in place within the county. Radios are currently purchased for around $800, but Skibinsky said the new radios will range from $3,500 to $5,000. Truck radios were priced between $5,000 and $7,000. System promoters suggest users can soften the economic hit by making purchases as old equipment needs replaced; however, compatibility of the Countys current radios would have to be determined. The Government of Alberta Justice department had an update on the progress of the project. See www.solgps.alberta.ca/ AFRRCS . AFRRCS is being developed as a voluntary buy-in service, to a single province wide P25 radio system based primarily on the 700mhz Public Safety radio band wave. There will be need for conventional VHF radio in mountain parks and designated remote areas. Operations will be push-totalk and provide message data for dispatch console operations. Emergency services can talk to one another without the need for additional equipment or specialized interconnections, yet can choose which agencies are connected. It replaces the Province of Alberta Communication System (PACS) used by the RCMP and the Multi Departmental Mobile Radio System (MDMRS) used by the Government of Alberta. It will be available to all Alberta first responder agencies and phased in between 2011 and 2014. Permitted manufacturers are submitting new radio models for addition to the allowed purchasing list. Users will be responsible for purchasing P25 handheld portables, mobile radios and mobile repeaters, as well as associated migration fees. Continued on Page 2

Charity golf tournament TIPS looking for a new charity

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Chinook Credit Union is looking for an organization to partner with for their 2014 charity golf tournament. On July 25 Larry Betts, Strathmore Chinook Credit Union branch manager, presented a cheque for $15,000 to Bev Nadeau, program manager for the Strathmore AIM Society. The funds were raised at the third annual charity golf tournament, which was held on July 5. This years tournament was the last one to raise funds for the AIM Society, though the bank will continue to partner with AIM on the annual walk, which was held on June 1 this year. Its been great to have the three-year relationship weve had, but I know theres a lot of other organizations in our communities that could benefit as well, said Strathmore Branch Manager Larry Betts. Next year were opening it up by application to other charities in Chinook communities, so wherever Chinook Credit Union is, organizations in those communities can apply said Betts. The exact process still has to be set up, said Betts, but the goal is to have applications in by November, decided on by mid-January. Then the bank can start their partnership with that new organization and get things on track for the summer golf tournament. AIM Society welcomes new manager

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Strathmore branch of the Foothills Advocacy in Motion (AIM) Society has welcomed a new program manager to its ranks. Bev Nadeau has been involved with the AIM Society for 13 years. Starting out as front-line staff, Nadeau worked her way up through intake coordination and financing. I kind of know AIM inside and out. Its kind of good and with the government steering things differently within our sector, said Nadeau. The AIM Societys head office is in High River, so when the flood hit they had to put accepting new clients on hold. She said the Society had a number of clients displaced due to the floods. The priority was making sure they were safe, with a place to stay. The Society was able to get a building in the community of Cayley, south of High River, and was able to maintain some of its programs out there. Nadeau said it will take a few months to get everything back on track, but the big thing right now is making sure the individuals have homes to go to and making sure the homes are safe for them to be back in, both for their clients and staff members. The last month has been a journey for all of us, and even though were not directly involved, its kind of had a ripple effect for all of us, said Nadeau. Hopefully well have things back to what we consider normal come September. On July 25 Chinook Credit Union presented a cheque for $15,000 from their annual charity golf tournament to the AIM Society. Nadeau said the funds from that will help enhance some of the programs AIM offers. We offer employment preparation and employment assistance if they need it to get back on track. A day program if they just need to have social networking, said Nadeau. We offer outreach to individuals that are a little higher functioning that need us to come out and do medical and appointments with them, do the budgeting and do meal prep with them. The AIM Society also offers residential programming to clients who may be looking for a place to live in the community, and respite care for those families or individuals who may need a little break. The Strathmore branch of the AIM Society currently has 15 clients, and Nadeau said there are a couple more they hope to invite into their family. The Society has been in Strathmore since 2009. It provides services and supports to adults with disabilities, helping them find the right support, people and placement in their lives and in the community.

Charges laid in sheep attack

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Charges have been laid in a case that saw several sheep killed and injured at the Ag. Society grounds earlier this month. The owner had one of the dogs euthanized, prior to charges being laid and without consulting with the RCMP, said Const. Andrew Lindsay. The dog was described as a wolf/ shepherd cross. The second dog is a Shepherd, we will not be removing it from the owner but will probably ask that the Crown requests that the owner be ordered to keep the dog properly contained on the property. Andrea Ouellet, 42, of Strathmore has been charged with 26 offences under the Strathmore Municipal Bylaw Act. The charges include two counts of dog at large and 24 counts of a dog killing or injuring another animal. Normally if someone was charged with a dog injuring or killing an animal it would be a $200 fine/per offence. In this case, Ouellet has been charged with 24 counts, the potential fine could be $200x24 plus the fine for two counts of dog at large, said Lindsay. The courts, however, could impose a higher or lower fine, especially if restitution is order to be paid to the sheep owner. On the morning of July 6 two dogs got loose from their home and wandered to the Ag. Society. There they attacked a herd of sheep that were on the land as part of a grazing contract with the Sunshine Hutterite Colony. There were seven sheep killed and 16 injured in the attack. There was also one goat injured so badly it had to be euthanized. Ouellet is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14.

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor While talking about water after flooding may seem like overkill, the flood may be a good reminder for landowners to reassess ground water, riparian areas and wells. Good condition of these areas helps with flood prevention in the future and County and Federal programs are offering landowners money for improvements. When in a properly functioning condition or healthy state, riparian areas are one of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems in the world. Healthy riparian areas sustain fish and wildlife populations, provide good water quality and stable water supplies, and support people on the landscape, said Sarah Schumacher, Agricultural Conservation Coordinator for Wheatland County. She said while they only occupy two to five per cent of the landscape, they make huge contributions. They trap and store sediment to maintain and build banks, recharge groundwater supplies, provide stable flow and flood protection, filter runoff and reduce the amount of contaminants and nutrients reaching the water. Fish and wildlife depend on this healthy environment and it encourages shelter and forage for livestock. Since 2011, Wheatland County has cost-shared projects to improve the quality of water in the County. The intent of the Wheatland County Water Protection Initiative is to work with interested landowners who wish to implement actions on their land, which conserve or improve water quality in Wheatland County. A long time coming

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Subdivision is a long drawn out process. The Schatokoskis have been waiting six years for their three-acre county residential re-designation on land just outside of Ardenode. The property came before council again on July 16, as the original bylaw had expired and council had to renew it prior to giving the proposal second and third reading. Bylaws are only in place for two years. I am a little frustrated with the process. The rules keep changing. The bills come in from the county and I keep paying them. It takes a lot of patience and I am not a patient man, said Van Schatokoski, an elderly gentleman. I was thinking that my grandchildren might have to carry this on. It just seems like it is one thing after another. As all the conditions were met and there were no registered objections, council quickly passed the second and third reading, which will give Schatokoski a letter of approval, so that he can register the new land title. Compassionate concession Wheatland Council passed a motion July 16, to allow flood victims the ability to stay in recreational vehicles parked on consenting landowners property within the county, for a term of not more than one year. We normally dont allow people to live in recreational vehicles parked on landowners properties, said Reeve Glenn Koester. Council is allowing the action to accommodate those friends and family who are having a hard time locating alternate housing. A written request must be made to the county, including the names of the persons occupying the recreational unit, where the unit is located and a dated signature indicating acknowledgment that the situation is an interim measure, for no longer than one year, while they look for alternate accommodation.

Six degrees of something

Pat Fule Fule for Thought If you read last weeks column, then you know that the Fules are brand new owners of a hedgehog. Of course, I still maintain Deb bought a badger by mistake, because this thing is huge. Its nocturnal, so youd have to have insomnia to see him do anything! We do know that he runs on his wheel a lot, in fact he has been inspiring me to keep at it, too! Its a strange animal, this hedgehog. For defense it popcorns into a ball with its bristles out. Im guessing the other thing it would do, based on the exercise wheel is run. The strange (and disgusting) thing is that this hedgehog also poops when he runs on the wheel. So it has a fearsome defense of running away fast pooping, leaving a gross trail, followed by it turning into a ball of bristles, snorting. I cant understand why these things arent extinct! Anyway, back to todays column. I was listening to the German version of the Beatles singing She Loves You, and I got to thinking of where my love of rockn-roll started. I was sick a lot as a kid, and when I stayed home, CFCN would have matinee movies. Some of these were Elvis movies, Beach movies, and rock-n-roll movies. In fact, my late mother said that I watched the Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Now, I cant remember this at all, but she said I ran out, and came back with a mop, using it to make a wig! For me, as a kid, it was the Big 3: The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and the most important was Elvis. Theres a theory posed, that was actually made into a play, then a movie starring Will Smith. The theory is called, Six Degrees of Separation. This theory states that due to advances in communication, travel, the Internet, and electronics, we live in a shrinking world. We can communicate with almost anyone on the earth in an instant. The theory goes on to state that, everyone is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction from any other person in the world. In other words I could have a friend, who in a friend of a friend connection, could cause me to have a link to any other person in the world. I know it sounds weird, but Ill give you an example. In the 70s, I was a fan of a Vancouver band called Blue Northern. Then years later, I discovered The Blue Shadows. There was something about the sound and the harmonies of these bands that caught me. Heres where the theory takes shape. A former student of mine owned a lounge here in Strathmore and hired a band called The Co-Dependents. In this band was a singer/musician named Billy Cowsill. Deb, another couple, and I got to hear them at this lounge. It was here where I recognized Mr. Cowsill, and I had a rare chance to talk with him during a break. He was gracious, and was impressed that I knew these other bands he was in, and not just the family group, The Cowsills. We chatted for quite a while, I got a photo with him, and he went back to play. It wasnt until I saw the movie, that I saw my Six Degrees of Separation. I had talked with Billy Cowsill, who had been on the Ed Sullivan Show. In fact, on one appearance in the 70s, he borrowed and played a guitar from John Lennon. John Lennon was obviously a Beatle, and he and the Beatles had met Elvis in the 60s and hung out with him at his California home. So there it was, my six degrees was actually only three! I met and talked with, a performer who knew John Lennon, who in turn, knew Elvis! Its actually quite a shock to know I was only two people away from being able to meet the one person I most wanted to meet. If only this meeting with Billy Cowsill came earlier in my life who knows what might have happened! Maybe I could have been introduced to Elvis! So, there you have it: my example of Six Degrees of Separation. Sadly, a few years ago, Billy Cowsill died due to serious health problems. Debs uncle, who had a hip replacement at the same time, told us of a very talented man, who was also his hospital roommate. He told us that he entertained all the staff and patients with his guitar while he was there! He wondered if I knew him his name was (he thought), Billy Cowsill! So now, the link also took in my wifes uncle. Uncle Gerry was linked to Billy, to me, to John Lennon, and finally to Elvis. As William Shatner would say, is that weird, or what? So, you never know, maybe you have a closer connection to someone youve always wanted to meet. Maybe youll be the one to close the separation! Flooding debrief
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland County Protective Services Manager Gerald Skibinsky and WFCSS Manager Lynn Walker met in council, to debrief council on their department actions during the flooding. On June 20-22, Skibinsky coordinated with the RCMP and Carseland Fire Department for bridge closures and sent out peace officers to confirm barricades were in place. He contacted Siksika Emergency Coordinator Tom Little Child and asked about need for cots and blankets. Gleichen Fire Chief Mike Burne had begun to set up a response unit in the Gleichen arena. He said the Town of Strathmore had offered their mobile trailer, with cots, and blankets that could be sent to the centre if needed. Skibinsky and Wheatland County Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Alan Parkin toured areas along the river, and checked the Carseland pump site, the reception centre in Gleichen and areas flooded on the reserve under consent of the Siksika emergency co-ordinator. Costs for damage to the Carseland facility and pumps are being estimated and will be sent to the province. Our only concern through the process was with Alberta Environment, said Skibinsky. He said that the call about imminent flooding could have been better, but he had since discussed the procedures with them. Going forward, better notifications will be given to Wheatland County. Notifications will be sent to Wheatland County and Calgary emergency co-ordinators at the same time. Skibinsky said that he asked WFCSS to help the county with flood issues if necessary. Walker reported on WFCSSs response. She said Siksika had notified them of the need for clean drinking water. She coordinated efforts with the County Food Bank to make up personal kits containing food, water and personal hygiene items. Over the course of the few days, needs at the Gleichen arena dissipated. On June 28, Global Training delivered two truckloads of clothing and household items to Siksika relief centre; however, they were turned away as needs had been met. Walker said WFCSS was on standby, in case any need arises in the recovery process. Whenever they need us, we will be there wherever we can, said Walker. Work alone policy introduced Marty Bozak, Health and Safety officer brought forward the Working Alone Policy to Council on July 16. The purpose of the policy is to ensure workers work safely and to encourage employers contracted to the County to use safe measures when workers are working alone. We have a responsibility to ensure this happens, said Bozak, about the policy. The policy had a series of checks and balances

and associated recording forms that Bozak felt would improve safety in isolated working situations. Adherence to the policy would minimize risks, identify hazards, make communications procedures clear, and educate all staff working for the County and those working under companies contracted by the County. It integrates an assessment of risks on a low to high rating scale, which would be accompanied by associated procedural plans. These included a series of check-in times through radio or cell phone communication and supervisory or nearest staff member safety checks on unanswered calls. Supervisors would be responsible for paperwork and staff adherence to the policies. Bozak said the policy meets all legislated safety guidelines and shouldnt affect staff numbers, or work hours. Some councillors questioned staff perception of the program and if some roles would find the recording too much. Some of the forms may be overkill in some situations, but it fits for others and protects all the staff, said Bozak. Peace Officer stats for June Peace Officer Ben Mendoza gave a summary of activity that engaged officers in June. They covered 101 traffic offences, attended to one call for disaster assistance, two RCMP assistance, one rollover assist, one Alberta Health Services report, assisted with Alberta Transportation cleanup, five unsightly residence calls, 12 animal control calls, six environmental calls and six general reporting duties. In total, they needed to put in 49 hours of overtime. Mendoza reported someone was using public road allowances for dumping grounds again and it was a hefty cleanup job. There were no clues that directed officers to those responsible. The County Public Works compound had a theft of 3,600 litres of fuel. Video was taken, but those involved were not easily identified, said Mendoza. He clarified that the new cameras were working well, and vehicle details picked up by the video helped RCMP catch two individuals, which resulted in charges laid. He said the individuals had disguised the license plates and themselves. Reinforcement had been done on the fence line, to address the problem in the future. Peace Officer Memorial Day Council approved a request for Skibinsky and another staff member to participate in memorial events and training sessions held on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Edmonton. We have not had any representation in the past few years and I feel it is important, said Skibinsky. He said one of the training presentations was a session on dealing with difficult people and methods of de-escalation in potentially violent confrontations.

Campground quashed
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland residents gathered in Wheatland Council chambers July 15, to object to a campground proposed for an eight acre parcel near RR235 and Hwy 21. We understand the risks of agriculture, but we are inviting people in who do not understand those risks. Seventy five per cent are long term residents, but 25 per cent of the spots are unreserved and there is no control over that demographic said one of the adjacent landholders. The possibility of having 100 to 300 people on eight acres and not having any problems with it are slim. Many of the surrounding neighbours appeared at the public hearing to register their opposition to the proposal. The list of concerns included camper complaints of farming practises, which generate dust and overspray drifting into the campground, increased traffic on the road, conflicts over farm equipment movement, campfire hazards and drifting smoke, no recreational facilities and safety of campers. They also felt the proposal did not fit into the definitions of the Municipal Development Plan, which discourages fragmenting agricultural land outside of designated growth nodes. The campground is centered in an agricultural area. Some people said the open house was not well advertised, and did not know when it occurred. The owner said she hand-delivered invitations to the open house; however, she could not reach some neighbours directly. She said that the campground was intended for middle age to senior recreational users and she adjusted the quiet time parameters to start at nine oclock. After the public hearing closed, councils unanimous vote defeated the second reading to redesignate the acreage for campground use.
Directions:

This snappy Shakespeare is for everyone

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor When a new theatre space called the Forum was created on the Passion Play stage, a Rosebud couple just had to take advantage of it. (The) new Forum is an outdoor space with fantastic acoustics, said Brad Graham, Production Stage Manager and Head of Props at Rosebud Theatre. I really wanted to see something theatrical happen in the space. Graham and his wife Glenda Warkentin, whos acted in She Has a Name and other productions, opened their own theatre company, Suspension of Disbelief, and will present their first production, Much Ado About Nothing, at the end of August. Much Ado About Nothing is a humorous, yet delicate story about love and jealousy, Graham says. Its a roller-coaster of emotions with some very witty dialogue, and when each of the love stories resolve it is as heartwarming as a summer day. I discovered Shakespeare in high school. Id love for other young people to do the same, he said. To that end, Weve found an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing thats snappy and still keeps the story intact. Theyre playing the timeless story in a modern setting, and using pay-what-you-can ticketing. I think this story has something in it for people who are in love (or would like to be), for a parent, for anyone whos ever been jealous of someone else, and for anyone who likes to laugh, he says. The audience will appreciate the jibes and taunts of Beatrice and Benedick as they argue, but even more the poor mixed-up Constable Dogberry and his accommodating deputy, Verges, (whose) Columbo-style sleuthing ends up saving the day. In short, this Shakespeare is for everyone. The Forums unique design will help audiences feel theyre a part of the show. Being outdoors and in full daylight, as well as the shape of the space, allows for our performers to really be talking (with) and maybe even hiding amongst the audience, Graham said. Much Ado About Nothing cast members, most of them former or current students of Rosebud School of the Arts, also serve as the crew. Weve drawn on individuals who possess significant acting skill (and) who are also talented designers, graphic artists, and wellrounded theatre people, says Graham. Warkentin, for instance, is playing Beatrice and designing costumes. Kelsey Krogman of Rosebud, wholl play Hero, designed the poster and will codirect. Graham is both producer and director. With their first show weeks away, Graham is already looking further ahead. Its my hope that we will be able to continue to develop the concept of summer Shakespeare with future productions, he says. There are so many fun scripts by the bard that Id love to tackle. Much Ado About Nothing runs August 23 - 25 and 28 - 31 at 7:30 p.m., August 25 and 31 at 2 p.m,. Kingdom Rock
The Strathmore Full Gospel Church held a Vacation Bible School July 22 to 26 with the theme this year of Kingdom Rock. There were 42 kids who came out to participate in the annual free program. There were stories told, snacks, games, crafts and more for the kids. The church looked like a castle inside, and was a great success in part because of the 21 helpers.

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Pat Leich, Chief Financial Officer for Wheatland County, hit a pop fly when she presented an option to open up investment opportunities with banks that did not give a 100 per cent guarantee on funds invested. Wheatland Council was on the ball and stopped the proposal from gaining momentum. You can have some risk, no risk, or open up to a competitive market, said Leich. She said there were options the county hasnt taken that were available to them, still compliant with the Municipal Government Act. Opening up to other banking institutions would increase returns, give bids that are more competitive and boost compensation rates. She was confident in the stability of the major Canadian banks. What we see is people looking to credit worthiness in making investments. Currently the banks credit ratings have been better than the provinces, said Leich. She said increasing investments to longer terms would beneficial. The county currently deals with Alberta Treasury Branch and Chinook Credit Union and invests in short term and one year plans. Leich said that other banks utilized Canadian Insurance Deposit Corporation that insures $100,000 of lost investments on defaults. Several financial advisors were asked to be present for council questions. If we plan to get high rates, we will miss them every time, said Reeve Glenn Koester on the day to day variations in the market. He did not have faith that similar circumstances could not occur in Canada. All councillors agreed caution was necessary with ratepayer money. It was discussed that rates would only be one or two per cent rate more and returns would not be very significant for the risk incurred. Leichs second proposal hit a home run. She knocked out a strategic plan for payment consolidations to be done by the bank instead of staff and gave it speed by delivering the addition of purchasing cards used for staff purchases. She tapped all bases indicating the plan would free up staff time in accounting data entry, give better data feedback, provide cash rebates, access to a credit line and provide direct pay opportunities for municipal vendors. She avoided being tagged out by suggesting checks and balances could be built in to prevent misuse, while retaining the current practise of supervisory control on expenditures. Contracts would be set up outlining responsibilities and penalties for those using cards. Policy would have to be written surrounding the plan. Council would still have to approve expenditures. Misuse would mean an automatic termination, said Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin, who had seen similar policies set in other municipalities and organizations. Precision farming reaches new levels

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Precision farming is about to get a whole lot easier thanks, to the introduction of a new satellite-imaging product called Power-Zone, developed by Agri-Trend. Power-Zone can gather up to 30 years of field data, cull out the years that were no good due to poor weather conditions, or poor crop growth, and help find zones where vegetation has been high or low. On July 19 Premium Ag held a crop tour and discussions to celebrate its 10th anniversary. One of those talks was by Doug MacKay, Geo-coach for Agri-Trend, who spoke about Power-Zone and how it can benefit todays farmers. Its a good starting point for your farm to get involved in precision farming. If youre not sure if variable rate (VR) is for you, if thats the way you want to go, before investing in Veris and going and getting your fields maps, you could get your whole farm Power-Zone analysis done much more economically said MacKay. Veris collection is one method to collect Electrical Conductivity measurements that are geo specific across a field that are GPS referenced. Once the collection is done there are tens of thousands sets of data including 12 and 36 EC, lat/long, and elevation. That data is analyzed and polished to create a zone based map upon discussion with the producer, Agri-Coach, and Geo-Coach. It will rank all of your fields, from best to worst candidates for variable rate, and which ones have the best potential for savings. Some fields that produce very well may not have a fit for investing more capital into VR technologies. Power-Zone can get a Crop Productivity Index (CPI), which lists what your potential savings could be, and net gains from yield if you go to variable rate applications. Savings in fertilizer combined with potential yield gains can also be calculated, and Power-Zone is specific to each individual farm. Precision farming, also known as satellite farming, is a farm management concept which observes, measures and responds to both inter- and intra-field variability. Rob Saik, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Agri-Trend group also spoke about the potential Power-Zone has for todays farming communities. He shared a story about a farmer from Red Deer that he spoke to just before the Agri-Trade Exposition last November. The farmer had called when there was still snow all over the ground and he told Saik he wanted a variable rate on two quarters this year, and he wanted to compare it to two quarters if they just did their standard program. Saik said you couldnt run a Veris machine when there is snow on the ground. Agri-Trend had just gotten the Power-Zone technology, and within 24 hours Saik was at the Red Deer farmers home with maps showing interpretations of the fields. Saik and the farmer took soil samples and all winter long they developed the variable rate maps. The cards were produced and installed into the machinery and this spring the farmer did two quarters of his land with variable rate technology. The second story Saik shared was about one of his longest customers from Vyefield Cattle Company from Burdett, Alberta. They dont do variable rate technology but theyre really big into cattle and they have a very large dairy operation. So I talked to Kevin Kielstra into doing Power-Zone for his operation, said Saik. The first thing they did was sat down and looked at the maps and picked out where they would scout the fields for disease, because, said Saik, you scout where the historic crop vegetation index is the highest. The second place they used the technology was for manure application. Saik said in some spots the irrigation pivot is heavy, and in the other half it is light but they have been putting on the manure application over the whole circle, which is something Vyefield now plans to stop. It was about a $5,000 bill for 1,800 acres. The third thing we noticed was on one circle called Marathon we didnt know how much poor area was in that circle, said Saik. In other words the poor zone was much larger than we had anticipated, so were going to go back there and were growing grain corn there. So we learned an awful lot about the field, even though these guys had farmed this field for 20 years all of a sudden youre seeing this field through a different set of lenses. The Power-Zone technology, whether youre into variable farming or not, will help farmers understand their fields better. The price of the service also ranges from $2.25 to $5 an acre, depending on the volume it is used on. It is geared as a full farm product.

Pass the Salt

The expression salt of the earth has been around for generations and remains with us to this day. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, the salt of the earth is now used to describe a person or persons of great kindness, reliability or honesty. Many people in our modern day world might be surprised at the origin of the saying. It comes to us from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, where Jesus, talking to a crowd of his followers says, You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. There is an elderly gentleman who works on the same floor as me. He works for a company that recently moved in across from us. After seeing this enigmatic fellow around for some time, I finally got the chance to introduce myself and find out a bit about him. We work in different sectors of the same field. Frank has been in the business since the 1940s. Hes 86 years old. He told me he tried retiring a couple of times, but it wasnt for him. So, every morning at 7:00a.m., he goes into work to sort and distribute mail, until noon. Then, he goes to the nursing home where his wife lives to sit with her while she has her lunch. She suffers from Alzheimers disease. After this, he goes home and rests and does it again the next day. Recently, he told me he was on his way to the hospital because wife had fallen and broke her hip. When I said, How awful, I am so sorry to hear that. He said, Well, a lot of people have it worse. I suddenly found myself looking at my trivial problems with a slightly different perspective. I am indeed humbled by the unassuming heroism and persevering spirit of this senior citizen. I bet a great many of us know someone in our community who is the salt of the earth, those people who make a world of difference in the lives they touch. This week, lets reach out to them some way in gratitude. Or, better yet, lets repay them by being the salt of the earth, to others. That way, we can all take an opportunity to pass the salt! Grateful but uncertain: Siksika Nation after the flood

Guenther Times Contributor When a flood swept into the Siksika Nation June 21, more than 1,000 people left their homes, expecting to return in a few days as they had after the flood in 2005. But the 2013 flood was not like the flood of 2005. Inspectors said 15 houses were irreparable and uninhabitable. Over 100 homes would be re-habitable after significant repairs. After weeks of sunshine, with standing water in basements, those statistics are likely to change and not for the better. Many residents could only return with Samaritans Purse volunteers, who were there to help clean out basements and carry clothes, documents, food, photographs, family heirlooms, and traditional artifacts to the dumpster. Despite loss and trauma, displaced residents are thankful for many things. When Shawn Redguns family of six moved into a tent on higher reserve ground, the first thing to help us out (was) financially, the money, he said. Donna Weasel Child and her daughter stayed in the Strathmore Travelodge. Shes grateful for the kindness there. They are super hosts, she said. Very understanding about the little kids racing around all over the place, and poor grandmas trying to keep them quiet and keep them still. To everybody who donated, and those who are praying for us, we really appreciate it its just overwhelming that people care that much. But the kids are going through trauma too, Weasel Child said. Theyve been displaced, and all of their belongings are gone. Their bedding, their toys, their home is gone. Muriel Kirby also moved to Strathmore. She hopes to move home once its cleared out. We go out there every day and come back to the hotel every night, she said. I go (to the house), just like Im going to work. And Im tired when I get back. She misses her dogs, who are in shelters. Loss intensifies the exhaustion. My childrens younger pow-wow outfits, their old ones that had been put away -- those were just thrown out in the dumpster, Weasel Child said. I lost a lot of stuff, but (my daughter) -- she lost everything. The loss continues. When we asked Redgun what his family needs, he said, right now, a tent. I have four kids and the wind blew down our tent. Weasel Child and other displaced band members could only stay in the Travelodge until Heritage Days opened; after that, all hotel rooms were booked, and she didnt know where theyd go. But even if Weasel Childs house is repairable, she wont move back. I love my community. I love my home, she said. But I will not live there anymore. Two floods, thats enough for me. The Nation has moved in ATCO trailers as temporary housing. Weasel Child said permanent homes might not be available for two years, perhaps longer. Where everything lies is not knowing, said Kirby. It was Christmas 1928, I and my two sisters (Edna, Norma), our parents Lilian and Ed were going to Uncle George and Aunty Glenna Mosss (Mossleigh Ranche) for Christmas day celebrations. They had seven children and we were anxious to see and play with our cousins. Uncle George had a lovely team of matched horses and a large sleigh. He came all the way from the Ranche to Carseland to pick us up. The horses had bells and ribbons on the harness and made a wonderful sound as they trotted along, In the sleigh was dry straw and heavy blankets as it was very cold. We were all dressed warmly and we huddled down in the straw with heated bricks and blankets with only our faces showing. We left Carseland and headed for the bridge over the Bow. The road was just a dirt trail covered with snow. When we crossed the river we turned left at Wyndams and followed the trail East up the river hill then South to the Ranche. When we got there the older cousins were waiting for us with a team of horses and a stoneboat so we could ride out to see the open prairie. Our presents for them were in a box and that was put under the tree. Our parents were glad to warm them selves by the big stove. Horses were used to haul everything for farmers and ranchers, cars were a rarity. I have always remembered this Christmas, the sleigh ride, jingling bells, and ten children all having a wonderful time.

A day in the life of a flood volunteer

Morgan Lee Times Contributor The Best Things in Life Arent Things Art Buchwald It was an overcast morning when we loaded up the car to drive out to Siksika. It was my mom, her friend from work, my sister and I who all packed in, and during the drive we were surprisingly talkative, despite it being 7:30 a.m., much earlier than either my sister or I like to wake up. We met at the Siksika High School with a bus that was driving volunteers out from Calgary, then picked out rubber boots and jumped on the bus to head to the community of Little Washington. As the bus drive down into the river valley I chatted with my sister, singing to the country songs on the radio and goofing around in the bus seats, giddy from being over tired and up so early. When the bus stopped we were separated into teams and then assigned to houses. At this point everything seemed pretty mechanical; we were given suits, gloves and masks to protect us from the potential mould and bacteria that we might encounter within the houses. We were given instructions to take frequent breaks and to change our masks if necessary. Our first job was to clean out what was left in the basement of the house so a truck could come and easily suck the mud out. At first we all went down to the basement into about a foot of muck, grabbing large debris and bringing it outside to a pile. This method was extremely tiring and inefficient with everyone going up and down the stairs, and as a group of 15 we soon managed to divvy up the labour, with about ten people down in the house, picking up large items and filling buckets with smaller things, and then passing them through the already smashed basement windows of the house to the five volunteers who then carried them to a pile. I was one of the carriers, and I was committed to being efficient, not really looking at the things I lugging them to a pile: wet cardboard, stacks of floor tiles, chunks of soggy insulation. I was like a worker bee, back and forth grabbing and going. At this point I wasnt thinking about what I was doing, I just wanted to get it done. This method changed suddenly, when within the pile of junk I was moving, I noticed a framed picture of a baby on Santas lap mostly soaked with the goopy, rancid mud. This was the moment when the reality of this abandoned house as a home became tangible. This photo was like a switch that turned on the emotions in me that I guess I was trying to ignore. As I placed the picture on the pile, tears trickled down the sides of my mask as I thought about how overwhelming this experience must be for the homeowners. Lucky for me, I was also sweating profusely because the suits we wore held in a lot of heat, so my tears were disguised, saving me from embarrassment while enabling me to have a private moment thinking about the family, their home and what I was really doing. As I continued to work the things I was pulling from the basement became more noticeable, a pair of skates, a childs tricycle, a dreamcatcher, all enveloped in a thick coating of sour smelling muck. Each of these items underscored the reality of the losses this family had. After lunch we had the opportunity to tour the Blackfoot Crossing Museum. Our guide was a flood victim herself, and it was her first day back at work. Throughout the exhibit she shared her personal experience of the flood and of her life, expressing intimate details about how she and her family we grappling with the loss of their personal treasures. She gave us advice: if you have a gift for someone, give it, dont wait. She was clearly devastated, becoming emotional with every story she told. Despite her familys great loss, she still had something positive to say about her circumstances. She spoke of how the flooding has brought people together, tearing them away from the overly technological world that we live in, to come together in support of one another. The tone in the room was one of gratitude and it was mutual, from both the guide and the volunteers. After working all day in a familys home, handling their personal items, it was fulfilling to actually meet someone who was affected by the floods, putting a face to this tragedy and hearing someones story. As we rode the buses up and out of the river valley, I looked out the bus window, and noticed how beautiful the prairie landscape is, especially with the sunbeams shining through the gray clouds onto the vast fields. Physically tired from the days work I rested my head against the bus window, my sister resting her head on my shoulder. Though my body was exhausted, I felt a renewed sense of energy within, the kind of energy that comes from community participation and helping others. As a community we are fortunate that disasters on this scale happen rarely; as a member of this community I am lucky my life was not directly affected by the flooding; however, I am also lucky to be able to help those in need, hearing and learning through their stories. Sometimes when someone needs help, the hardest thing to do is ask. Im proud of my family for helping this day, but Im more proud of my community for coming together in these times of need.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores Scott Ball, along with his teammates, will be racing in the Canadian Death Race on August 4 and 5 a 125 km course through the Rocky Mountains in Grand Cache, with 17,000 feet in elevation changes. The race began in 2000, and has the competitors race for 24 hours through five legs, ranging from 19 km to 36 km. Ball will be completing the last leg through the night of 22 km. This was kind of a life changing thing for me, said Ball. We started four or five months ago, training for this, and I was 189 pounds, Im down to 155. Ninety-nine per cent of it is running, and then my diet as well has changed. I basically dont eat fast food anymore. Its actually been the best thing thats ever happened to me. Ball was introduced to the race by good friend Scott Wismer, who had previously served in Afghanistan and ran the race last year. Wismer is doing the hardest leg of two mountain summits this time around. Ball has been running anywhere from five to 30 km each day to practice for this weekend. Everyones kind of nervous and anxious and excited kind of that funny feeling in your stomach. Its going to be really good, he said. Balls team of his brother Luke and friends Wismer, Chase Dziatkewich, and Clay Dahl are raising funds for Project Hope in Strathmore. The latters brother was in the program for kids who are mentally challenged. Project Hope uses musical, physical education and speech therapies to assist the children involved. The team of five chose Project Hope to support because it is completely funded by donations. Its not mandatory to sponsor a charity for the Death Race, but it was something the group wanted to do. Ive actually seen it, it does work for them. It helps them express something that they cant express, said Ball. The group has a fundraising goal of $5,000. The Tour of Alberta coming through our province in September has announced new sprint sections within the legs, to bring the small communities into spotlight, rather than simply having the riders go through. These areas include kilometer 27 in Fort Saskatchewan and Ardrossan on September 4, kilometer 57.3 in Wetaskiwin and kilometer 94.6 in Ponoka on September 5, and kilometer 93.4 in Drumheller on September 6. On September 7, there will be
no sprint due to the terrain in the mountains for that day, however the last sprint will be on September 8 in Calgary at kilometer 117.9. Within the race there are now four competitions: the general classification (the yellow jersey in the Tour de France), the mountain classification (typically the polka dot jersey in France), the best U23 Canadian, and the sprint classification (the green jersey in the Tour). It really creates a race within the race, said Chairman of the Board, Brian Jolly. Each team will have a dedicated one or two sprinters, all

these teams will protect that sprinter, so that he doesnt get tired and hes in good shape for the sprint. Jolly says the last kilometer will have the riders doing 50 km/h or more. Hell be taking shelter (from wind) before the last 200-300 meters, when hell burst out like a rocket and try to win, said Jolly. Youll have four or five teams trying to do the same thing, so itll get really, really interesting. Theres money at stake, and theres the overall green jersey at stake, which is very prestigious. The general classification winner for the Tour of Alberta proves he can time trial, sprint, and climb. The province will be the title partner for the Leaders jersey. Stage 4 of the Tour of Alberta has been rerouted due the floods in Canmore and the damage along Highway 40. Instead, it will begin and end in Black Diamond. Racers will complete two rounds each of a 60 km circuit through the foothills, and then a 40 km circuit through tough terrain. Ten of the 11 stages the Tour of Alberta had planned were affected by Junes floods. Everyones been able to come through with the goods, with a lot of help from different areas and communities. This event will help them because what the event is about is selling Alberta to the world particularly the small communities, which normally dont get the exposure, said Jolly. Also, at each start and finish, there will be festivals of culture, cuisine, travel experiences, and performing artists from the province; this will be put on by Alberta Culture and Alberta Tourism, Parks, and Recreation, both of which have invested $250,000 each for the start and finish events. The festivals for the Tour of Alberta promise to be bigger and better than anything the cycling world has seen before, thanks to the support from the province, and in general the enthusiasm of everyone involved, said Brian Jolly. With daily themes ranging from the Wild West in Edmonton to Global Fare in Calgary, race spectators and up to 35 million television viewers in Canada and 100 million households around the world will be treated to all the best Alberta has to offer. The Tour of Alberta is partnering with Travel Alberta and Destination Marketing Organizations to have the tour broadcast throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. Final rosters for each team will be announced this month.

450 contestants competed in the Rockyford Rodeo from July 26 to July 28, but thousands came to enjoy food, bouncy castles, and face painting for the kids. Despite heavy winds, spectators enjoyed the entertainment of the cowboys and the parade. All funds raised will go towards the Village, including a new year-round washroom facility on the rodeo grounds.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter At the 56th Rockyford Rodeo, 450 contestants competed in everything from bareback riding to team roping to steer wrestling this is the most the rodeo has ever hosted. This is the biggest rodeo weve had so far in terms of contestants, and I think gate is up, said Kevin Elder, part of the Rockyford Lions Club. Trailers and stuff, were pretty much full. Mayor Darcy Burke credits the fact that there is a declining amount of small-town rodeos in the province. Theyre shutting down, he said. We still have the same number of cowboys, but less venues to go to. Thats why we have more people in the stands. Theres still people that follow rodeo. Elder also noted the more contestants that enter, the bigger the prize money, the more cowboys it lures. This is not a stampede, this is a rodeo, said Mayor Burke. Strathmore has a stampede, Calgary has a stampede; in Rockyford, we have a rodeo. The difference? Youre right there. Youre right in the action you can get on if you want. Hundreds of volunteers were needed to help out with the ever-growing event from July 26 - 28. This weekend does not happen unless you have contestants, a facility, youve got volunteers, and youve got sponsorship. If you dont have those four, it doesnt happen, said the Mayor. It takes those people, its a partnership between those groups. Right after the rodeo is finished, a new year-round washroom facility will be built on the rodeo grounds, a $200,000 investment. The funds raised here this weekend, they stay in our community, said Mayor Burke. The rodeo, he feels, promotes the Village of Rockyford significantly, bringing in people from as far as Ontario and the United States. When it comes to Rockyford Rodeo, you see the stands are full. You drive across this province, and you mention Rockyford, people will say rodeo, he said. Fifty-six years is a tradition, and its 56 years of being successful.

The Strathmore Reds Mosquito baseball team ended their season by beating out the Red Deer Braves on July 28 by a score of 12-1, to capture their second provincial title in two years. Half of the 10 and 11-yearold boys team won Tier 4 provincials last year as well. Seven players will move up to the peewee age group for the Reds next season.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores AA Mosquito baseball team conquered Tier 2 Provincials this past weekend in Red Deer, after winning Tier 4 Provincials last year a spectacular jump. The kids are so excited, they played so hard. Its such an accomplishment. Last year, when we won the Provincials for Tier 4, they were like this may be the only championship you win, said L.J. McNeil, whose son Keegan, plays right field for the Strathmore Reds. The Reds lost their first game on Friday, but went undefeated for the rest of the weekend; against Red Deer on Saturday, the boys were down 7-1 at one point, and stormed back to win 15-10. The eventually beat the Red Deer Braves again in the final on Sunday, 12-1. I think what happened, the Friday night game we lost, basically then, we knew we had to win the remaining three games to definitely be into the final. We just really came on with some amazing plays and amazing games, we just kept winning, said L.J. McNeil. Seven players on the 10 and 11-year-old boys mosquito team will be moving up to peewee next season, including Keegan McNeil. This was the best weekend Ive played, he said. I had a few good catches, I had some great hits, and I had some RBIs. Keegan says he enjoys baseball so much because the game can go either way in one inning, proven by their Saturday victory over the Braves. Excited to move up to peewee next year, Keegan says hell

During the season, wed win a couple and lose a couple. We knew going into provincials that the team was capable of winning, we didnt know how they would come on, said mother L.J. I think we couldve held our own in the Tier 1 level as well. I dont know that we wouldve won it, but we certainly wouldve given everybody a run for their money. Coach Jason Tanton would like to thank manager Sonny Warrack and the coaching staff for their efforts. I have coached a long time and won multiple provincial championships and have coached at National Championships but this is the team I am the proudest of, Coach Tanton said.

Strathmore Slopitch held their playoff games at the Ag. Society ball diamonds July 26 to 29. Dirty Mitz and Each Hit played each other on July 27 as part of the competitive round robin playoff. Each Hit had the lead until the last inning when Dirty Mitz took the lead.

The Linda McKenzie Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament took place in Carseland on July 26-28. It was awesome to see so many family and friends taking part by either playing ball or cheering on their favorite team. As one family member stated, we played ball, had tons of laughs, all for a great lady. Many other comments of appreciation were expressed as well. Thank you to Derek Alce for organizing the tournament on behalf of the Carseland Ag Society. President of the Carseland Ag Society, Rita Kruger dedicated one of the four diamonds in memory of Linda, which will be named, McKenzie Field. Linda devoted a lot of time to the kids and their sports and was a huge part of Minor Sports for many years. On Saturday evening everyone enjoyed a Pig Roast, thanks to Roy Groves. Many other volunteers lent a hand to make this a successful weekend. Money raised will be donated to Carseland Minor Sports/Carseland Kids Wellness Coalition as per the familys wishes.
With a nearly full registration, the National Ringette School brought their camp to Strathmore for the third year out of the last four. Girls learn the fundamentals of the sport with on-ice training, dryland workouts, and strategy lessons in the classroom.

Strathmore hosts ringette camp

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Bunny, novice, and petite ringette players ages 7 to 12 are taking part in the National Ringette Schools camp in Strathmore this week, focusing on dry-land training, onice learning, and strategy lessons in the classroom. Five instructors are leading 30 players and three goalies, from July 29 to August 2, on how to develop their ringette fundamentals. This is definitely skills based, and in the classroom, piecing strategies for the game itself, said Pre-Bunny Division Coordinator, Cecilia Moore. Near the end of the week, they do some game play, for sure, but through the week they really are focusing on development of those skills, because you want to teach those skills correctly. The National Ringette School is based in Calgary, but has 22 camps across Canada with over 1,500 participants. The program has run in Strathmore three of the past four years. We picked Strathmore because there was a popular group here; quite a few younger girls that want to learn ringette, and try to improve their skills, said local instructor Dakota Gillies, who was in the program herself. She is now a Strathmore Minor Ringette Association grad, and has been competitive in the sport for 14 years. Site Manager for Strathmore, Steph Cook, also went through the camp for three years, and has been instructing for nine. The ice time focuses on the specific skills, the stuff we do off-ice is the teamwork, and the patience, and the focus, she said. On the ice we go through every skill: we do the forward skating, backward skating, pivots, tight turns. Anything you would encounter in a ringette game. All instructors are either involved with the NRL or are university players therefore they understand the game at such a deep level. That theyre able to teach it most effectively. You learn things here that you dont necessarily get in other places, Cook said. Goalie Emma Moore is in her fourth year of National Ringette School camp, and eventually wants to become an instructor too. I learn how to be a better goalie and how to skate better, she said. Stevens siblings place fifth

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter While Hayze and Destiny Stevens each faced decently in their individual breakaway events, together the pair placed fifth in team roping in the nation, at the Junior High Rodeo Canadian Finals in Nanton from July 25 - 27. It felt good, I was ready. In the team roping, I was ready anyways. I was pretty confident in myself. Me and Destiny did really, really well, said 14-year-old Hayze. We couldve done better but we did great. The second calf we had, it wasnt really good. It just went to the fence. We couldve won, if we would have caught that one, said sister Destiny, 13. Many of the kids they faced at Canadian Finals were also at Gallup, New Mexico for National Finals back in June. There, Hayze and Destiny finished in the 20th-30th range each in individual breakaway roping. Prizes were awarded for the top four roping teams at Canadian Finals, so, the Stevens just missed out. However, the pair received $25 for placing third in the first round. After the three rounds, Hayze placed roughly 15th overall in breakaway; Destiny finished second in the first round of her roping, but then missed her tosses the next two rounds. The pair will be competing in team roping at the Rodeo Super Series in August, and also in individual events. Prior to that, they will bring their team roping skills to the Sundre Super Six Aug. 7 - 8.

Morgan Lee,Times Contributor Pancake breakfasts and rodeos go hand in hand, and this year Strathmore businesses and clubs are keeping that tradition alive. There are free pancake breakfasts and free barbeque lunches that will be happening all week, so even with an empty wallet you can fill your belly! Starting up the Friday food fest is Co-op, who will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. serving pancakes, sausage, fruit, coffee and orange juice. But the free food doesnt stop there - that afternoon from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. Chinook Credit Union will be having their annual Strathmore Stampede lunch where you can find beef on a bun, coleslaw, beans and cookies. Another free breakfast feast is happening at the Strathmore Legion on Sunday morning. Their breakfast runs for four hours from 7 a.m. 11 a.m., keeping options open for both the early and late risers. They will be serving classic breakfast fare: pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs. Additionally, Saturday, Aug. 3 Byron Smith Ford is hosting their annual barbeque, beginning right after the Strathmore Stampede Parade and going through until the late afternoon. Country singers Beverly Mahood and Jake Mathews will be on hand, as well as Christian Laurian Kerr playing keyboard in between sets. What is so special about this event is that the meal is free, but there are requests for donations with all

proceeds to go to the Strathmore Crisis Shelter, the Strathmore Food Bank and the Siksika Flood Victims. The Strathmore & Area Ministerial will be hosting their annual Cowboy Church Breakfast on Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Strathmore Ag Grounds. The Strathmore Lions Club will be serving breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the church service starting at 9 a.m. Listen to live gospel music while enjoying a free pancake breakfast. Food is a big part of bringing Strathmore and area communities together; so dont miss one of these opportunities to break bread with your neighbours this Strathmore Stampede weekend. Angus Luke (Gus)
Died July 26, 2013 in Strathmore Alberta. Born February 5, 1937 in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia. Died July 26, 2013 in Strathmore Alberta. Gus grew up in Cheticamp, Cape Breton until he was 17 years of age joining the army. He took training in Shilo MB, where he was with the IRCHA as a paratrooper. Following his stint in the military he worked in the logging camps on Northern Vancouver Island, then settling in Alberta working on various farms and ranches. His later years were spent in the oil and gas industry as a pipefitter and safety instructor. Gus enjoyed and loved the outdoors whether it was riding his horse or just camping. Gus was a prankster with all he met and knew. His sense of humor was his trademark. Even through his many health issues, he always managed a big smile and a joke right to the end. During the last 5 years, he immensely enjoyed living in the 5th wheel spending the winters in Osoyoos creating many friendships over a game of cards, or a game of pool, or just having fun playing spoons on jam night. The summers were just as much fun being campground hosts at Tileybrook Provincial Park. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Evelyn, his two daughters, Kathy and Nicole, his four granddaughters, Taylor, Laiken, Kennedy and Gracey Mae, plus his little Buddy great granddaughter Lyla. He is also survived by three brothers Raymond (Mary) Peter Paul (Claudette) and Melvin (Paula), Sister in law Dorothy MacKenzie, and Gayle Nakamera, brother in law Clifford Fuller plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Sadie Jane Chiasson and brother Daniel. A private family service was held and a Family and friends gathering will be held at the Strathmore Legion on Wednesday, August 7th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Strathmore Legion or to Stars Air Ambulance. He will be so deeply missed by many. We love you Grampi!
