    ASSURE MODEL LESSON PLAN

    Subject: Science Class: Standard One


    Topic: Classification of Animals Age Range: 7-8 years
    Time: 30 minutes
    A. ANALYSE LEARNERS

    General Characteristics: The students represent a range of experiences and attainment


    levels. There are 12 students- 6 boys and 6 girls. They come from a lower socio-economic
    background. Many of the parents are self employed or not employed at all. Most of them
    also belong to single-parent families. One student has both parents incarcerated for drug
    possession at present. Students enjoy listening to stories especially those involving
    interactions with animals.

    Entry Characteristics: Students enjoy listening to stories about animals. They have also
    learned about animals and discussed the differences between them in a previous lesson.
    They have also learned the groupings of animals in a previous lesson.

    Learning Styles: Students in the class exhibit a variety of learning styles. The majority of
    students prefer to search for materials on their own. They later discuss their findings with
    their classmates.

    B. STATE OBJECTIVES: Students will


    1) Classify animals based on given criteria.
    2) Work co-operatively with their peers.

    C. SELECT METHODS, MEDIA AND MATERIALS:


    Methods:
    Task Production: Pictures of various animals are distributed to student groups.
    Students will be asked to classify animals. Teacher guides students accordingly.
    Group Work: Students will work in groups of three to complete the task given.
    They will place pictures in the correct boxes.
    Materials: 10 pictures per group, Boxes labeled Mammals, fishes, Birds,
    Reptiles insects.
    D. UTILIZE MEDIA AND MATERIALS:
    Environmental Preparation: Arrange seating for 3 groups of 4 students. The material
    would be made ready for distribution.
    Audience Preparation: Students are assigned to homogeneous groups. The teacher
    reviews the rules of co-operation for the benefit of the students.
    E. REQUIRE LEARNER PARTICIPATION:

    Initial Activities: The teacher questions the students with respect to their prior
    knowledge of animals. A picture of Mr. Rod’s farm is show to the class and the story is
    read aloud. Students are given the pictures of animals.

    Skills to Practice: Students categorize animals according to distinguishing


    characteristics.
    F. EVALUATE AND REVISE:

    Learner Evaluation: The following areas are evaluated:


    Students’ responses
    The completion of the task
    Group dynamics including the contributions made by each member
    Evaluation of Methods and Media: Both group work and co-operation activities are
    evaluated for future reference.

    Revision: The teacher and students reflect on the lesson so as to improve both teaching
    and learning outcome in future lessons.
