The document summarizes the student's progress on their professional portfolio related to competency G-2-1 on health teaching and coaching for pre and postoperative care. The student describes a learning experience researching postoperative care best practices and teaching patients about early ambulation. They learned health teaching benefits patient recovery and prevents complications. The student rates their competency level as "good" and explains how they achieved it through dedicated research, class attendance, and skills practice. They will apply this by continuing health teaching skills practice and staying informed on best practices for future patients.

G-2-1 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to
provide health teaching and coaching associated with pre and postoperative care. One significant learning experience that I learned from this course is that health teaching is an essential part of pre and postoperative care. In addition, including health teaching in nursing interventions provides health benefits through education for clients to recover from their surgery and prevent the development of complications associated with post-operative surgeries. I was able to apply this skill when we were assigned to complete a research regarding previous and current surgical issues in the hospital care setting. Based on my research, the previous issue was that nurses were not able to incorporate early ambulation for post surgical clients specifically on clients that had a total knee replacement. The recent article found that this previous practice results in the development of certain complications like deep vein thrombosis and long recovery. Through researching the current best practice, I found that the utmost nursing intervention was to encourage and teach patients the benefits of early mobilization. Through this teaching, patients will benefit from decreasing incidences of developing DVT and improve their ability to regain muscle strength by early mobilization. I learned that gaining knowledge and ability to successfully incorporate health teaching to post surgical clients can help them recover and decrease the incidence of developing complications. I also learned that it is important to evaluate the outcome of patient education so that I would be able to know if the outcome has reached my client goal. In addition, this learning was meaningful because I was able to gain knowledge and confidence on providing the best health education for my future post-operative clients. From the proficiency category, I would rate myself on the category of good: understands competency in theory and in scenarios and nursing practice. To achieve the CLPNA competency, I dedicated an ample time to do my research of previous and current issues of surgical clients in the health care setting. Through my research, I was able to identify the best practice from comparing it to the previous practice. In doing this assignment, I was able to relate my health teaching based on my research
that supports early ambulation for post surgical
clients. I also achieved this competency by being a motivated student. I attended my theory classes and ask my professor for clarifications regarding my client health teaching. I came prepared for the post surgical procedures lab skill by watching the videos, reading my textbooks and doing the exercises in my lab manual. I actively participated during health teaching of post surgical clients and exercised my already gained knowledge from my current research. DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL APPLY THIS LEARNING IN YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE NURSING PRACTICE
I will apply this learning skill throughout my
practical nursing course. During my current practice, I will continue to actively participate in the lab by providing health education for my post surgical clients. I will do this by practicing more nursing care scenarios in lab and at home so that I will be able to apply my knowledge on health teaching. In my future practice, I will gradually update my knowledge on current best practices by being informed and up to date on my skills. I will do this by gaining an active participation in the CLPNA. Through this, I will be able to provide my future postoperative clients the most current health teaching.
