LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

During NFDN 1002, I have learned the importance of maintaining

safety not only to promote my own health and well being as a nurse,
but to prevent injury to my patients and coworkers as well. A great
example of this is the art of ambulating my patients, either manually or
with a mechanical lift. If I use incorrect or unsafe technique I could
severely injure my patient, my coworker, or myself, possibly resulting
in long term pain and disability.
In relation to this competency, I have learned head to toe assessments
and how to recognize distress, proper body mechanics, proper sharps
management, as well as how to properly check and re-check
medications safely. These skills are all crucial in maintaining my safety
and the safety of those around me, especially with patients who are
unable to care for themselves and rely on me for their health and well
being.
I would rate my proficiency in this particular competency "good." In
order to achieve the level of confidence I have in this competency I
have read and reviewed notes taken in class as well as textbooks
generously, as well as practiced lab components daily, ensuring I have a
solid foundation and confidence in my technique and routine for when
I am faced with real patients in a clinical setting.

Safety is an everyday necessity, and I must always be conscious of my

surroundings and be able to think critically and quickly on my feet with
every decision I am faced with. My confidence in this competency will
only increase as I practice my skills and take away more and more
knowledge through education and personal experiences. This will
ensure I am maintaining the safety and well being of everyone I am
exposed to at work and in everyday life.
