When initially completing the self-assessment form, I assumed I would do well on the
CPNRE predictor exam. I had previously completed the CPNRE study guide and found it quite
easy; however I found the predictor exam was more challenging. I was shocked by the results and
found that I was lacking in all areas of the exam.
My rationale for thinking I would be successful in the CPRNE exam was based on a
combination of the confidence I had gained through working on the units during clinical, as well
as my results from the self-assessment tool. I was under the impression, given these successes,
that I was doing very well with my competency but only lacked in a few areas (such as blood
administration as I had not encountered that yet in the clinical setting).

Test results
The critical thinking area is the primary focus of study; I only received a 64% on the
predictor exam. I feel confident that I can use my critical thinking skills to apply my knowledge in
a clinical setting, however in an exam setting I often second guess myself. I plan on using various
CPNRE exams and apps to help me enhance my critical thinking skills and practice. While
answering critical thinking questions, I will learn to destruct or work backwards during the
questions; breaking them down and pulling out key information that is needed to effectively
answer the questions.

I tend to get nervous during exams and rush through them. Upon review of my application
and critical thinking areas, I received a poor mark because I didnt stop to read the exam questions
entirely; I missed simple cues in the questions themselves. Using the predictor exams will allow
me to work on my critical thinking skills in a testing scenario and become more proficient at
deconstructing the questions and pulling out key information. This will help me look at the
objective information, instead of look at the questions subjectively as I currently do.

The application area is the second primary focus of study; I only received 64% on the
predictor exam. I plan to use the Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing (2010) and the Mosbys
videos on practical nursing skills, focusing on the application and skills sections in order to
enhance my application marks. I will use the videos to critique my application process, ensuring
the correct procedures are followed.
Upon review of my application and critical thinking areas, I realize that I received a poor
mark because I didnt stop to read the exam questions entirely; I missed simple cues in the
questions themselves. Using the text and videos will help me to solidify my knowledge of these
areas, while helping me identify clues in the CPNRE exam itself, such as the subtle difference
between clean and sterile procedures.

My initial study plan will focus on three areas of practice, including professional,
collaborative and foundation. While working with the interdisciplinary team these areas are

answers were correct or not, reinforcing my learning and giving a rationale for incorrect answers.
I prefer using tests to help me retain information. According to the Journal Science, those
who took practice tests retained almost 50% more information after a week then those who used
other methods of studying (Karpicke, 2011). Using practice tests forces students to use critical
thinking skills to recall information learned instead of relying on recognition as used with flash
cards. As stated above, after completing the practice exams, a review of the exam gives the
rationale for each question, allowing me to learn why the answers are correct or not, reinforcing
my learning and giving a rationale for incorrect answers.
