From Vance Joys music video, for his song Fire and flood I liked the use of colour
and lighting in the video and how it corresponded to the emotions of the lyrics. I also
like the symbolism aspect that was used within the video, and how an interpretive
narrative is woven into the video.
James Bays song Hold back the river is focussed solely on himself and the song. I
liked this aspect because it focusses the attention on the song, the artist, and the
instrument. I like the bland background as well because this also draws the attention
to the song. Although I would prefer to use a light, or brighter colour that is less
bland than the black background.
Lyrics
Insert the song lyrics below
Ill use you as a warning sign
That if you talk enough sense then youll lose your mind
Ill use you as focal point
So I dont lose sight of what I want
Ive moved further than I thought I could
But I miss you more than I thought I would
The song doesnt have a simple meaning. The song is subject is subjective, and can
be interpreted by the listener in different ways.
Although the music is could be considered either woeful or calming, this is because
of the slow beat and the melodically singing.
From the lyrics we can gather that the song is being sung about someone who was
loved. It is never specified as to who or what type of love it is. All the lyrics are vague
meaning that they understood differently.
Because of the subjective lyrics of the song, the visuals will reflect this. The visuals
will be impressionist so that the song matches the video and can be reflective just as
the song is. This means that a narrative can be constructed from the symbolic
images that match the lyrics and tell their own story.
But since the song is a cover, this means that I want the artist to be the main part of
the video rather than only the song. Because of this the video is mainly As live and
shows the singer sing and playing the song. The impressionist aspect then is only
shown in short clips throughout the song.
