Standards (What do you want students to know and be able to do? What knowledge, skills, and strategies do you
expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? ) Please
put a summary of the standards you will be addressing rather than abbreviations and numbers that indicate which
standards were addressed.
Students will investigate how clouds are formed. Students use computers for capturing
Content Standards
information.
Students demonstrate understanding of and operation of technology. Students use
NETS*S Standards: technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
Overview (a short summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)
This lesson was created to allow students the opportunity to use technology as a way of research, creation, and
communication. After a quick pre-assessment on SurveyMonkey, the students will view a cloud powerpoint,
research the 3 basic types of clouds, create a short presentation on emaze. By the end of this lesson, the
students should have more knowledge on various online tools that can be used for research purposes as well as
tools for creating presentations. Students should also have more knowledge on clouds and how they are formed.
Essential Questions (What essential question or learning are you addressing? What would students care or
want to know about the topic? What are some questions to get students thinking about the topic or generate
interest about the topic? Additionally, what questions can you ask students to help them focus on important
aspects of the topic? (Guiding questions) What background or prior knowledge will you expect students to bring
to this topic and build on?) Remember, essential questions are meant to guide the lesson by provoking inquiry.
They should not be answered with a simple yes or no and should have many acceptable answers.

What are the 3 basic types of clouds?

What are clouds made of?
How do you think clouds form?
How do the 3 basic types of clouds predict weather?

Assessment (What will students do or produce to illustrate their learning? What can students do to generate new
knowledge? How will you assess how students are progressing (formative assessment)? How will you assess
what they produce or do? How will you differentiate products?) You must attach copies of your assessment and/or
rubrics. Include these in your presentation as well.
To begin the lesson, the students will complete a very simple quiz on Survey Monkey. I will write the web address
on the board so that the students can use their Chromebooks to access the survey. After we have finished the
quiz, I will use their data to lead a group discussion/review on the material we are learning. I will also use a rubric
to assess their finished product which is the presentation on the information collected.
Most of the students have already had some experience with creating powerpoint presentations but for those who
have not, I have provided a step by step tutorial on how to use emaze to create a presentation. I also wanted to
make sure that I had the directions posted so that students could see the words. I would like for all of the students
to create their presentation using emaze, but for those that are struggling using the computer, I included the
option to create a presentation in front of the class. If students do an oral presentation, they still must include
pictures in their presentation. Student who create their presentation using emaze will still present to the class.
I will assess students learning by their creation of their presentation on Clouds. In order for the students to get full
credit for this assignment, they must use some form of audio/visual aids and/or media. A rubric will be created to
use as a way of assessing them and their work. Although, the assessment will be at the end of the project, I will
be monitoring students throughout the process to try and identify any struggles they may face. I want to ensure
that they are working successfully through the entire process.

Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resourcesonline student
tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etchelp elucidate or
explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students
have to complete this project?)
Every classroom in the school contains a set of 25 Google Chromebooks and each student used one during this
project. The Chromebooks stay in the classroom at all times. Although each student had their own Chromebooks
to navigate through the SurveyMonkey and the Cloud Powerpoint, I still modeled it on the SmartBoard and led the
students. Most of the students found it very easy to navigate.
By beginning with the pre-assessment, it allowed students to begin thinking about the material being covered.
Also, after viewing the cloud powerpoint online, the students were able to identify correct answers for questions
they may have gotten wrong on the pre-assessment. By using emaze to create their presentations, students are
enhancing their technology skills as well as their learning skills on the topic. Since emaze is an online
presentation tool, the students are able to create their presentation using the Chromebook, but they are also able
to save their work and finish it at home on their own time. Extra time on the Chromebook is provided for those
who do not have computer access at home.
Instructional Plan
Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How can
you find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)

The way I have my project laid out with using Chromebooks worked well with my students. The students are
already familiar with using the Chromebooks for other subjects and were able to easily navigate to get to each
step of the project. Although Emaze is quite new to the students, they were very enthusiastic about trying
something new to create their presentations instead of using paper and pencil or Microsoft Powerpoint. I used my
knowledge of my students to choose the best elements to make their experience as beneficial as possible.
Although my activities were somewhat simple, I still struggled with my students not being able to understand the
process of creating the presentation on Emaze. I feel that by creating the tutorial students were able to navigate
and manipulate Emaze better.
Management Describe the classroom management strategies will you use to manage your students and the use
of digital tools and resources. How and where will your students work? (Small groups, whole group, individuals,
classroom, lab, etc.) What strategies will you use to achieve equitable access to the Internet while completing this
lesson? Describe what technical issues might arise during the Internet lesson and explain how you will resolve or
trouble-shoot them? Please note: Trouble-shooting should occur prior to implementing the lesson as well as
throughout the process. Be sure to indicate how you prepared for problems and work through the issues that
occurred as you implemented and even after the lesson was completed.
This project was teacher and student guided using a teacher computer and SmartBoard as well as student
Chromebooks. While the teacher displayed the directions to access the pre-assessment as well as the Cloud
Powerpoint on the SmartBoard, the students followed along individually using a Google Chromebook at their
desk.
I made sure to check the Chromebooks charging cart before I planned to implement the lesson. I wanted to make
sure that all Chromebooks had been shut down properly and plugged in to charge completely overnight. Along
with the student Chromebooks, there is a main teacher Chromebook as well. I made sure that a bookmark for the
pre-assessment would show up for all student computers. I wanted to make sure that the students could simply
click on the bookmark. The students must type in a username and password in order to access the Chromebooks.
The students have an index card that includes their username and password.
Unfortunately, some of the Chromebooks were unable to link the bookmark correctly. For those that were unable
to access the pre-assessment by the bookmark, I simply wrote the link on the board for them to type the website. I
also included the website address for the Cloud Powerpoint as well as the address for Emaze.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Activities Describe the research-based instructional strategies you will
use with this lesson. How will your learning environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the
students' roles in the lesson? How can you ensure higher order thinking at the analysis, evaluation, or
creativity levels of Blooms Taxonomy? How can the technology support your teaching? What authentic,
relevant, and meaningful learning activities and tasks will your students complete? How will they build knowledge
and skills? How will students use digital tools and resources to communicate and collaborate with each other
and others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?

The students' role in this lesson is to research the 3 basic types of clouds and then create a short presentation on
the research they found. They should include pictures as well as authentic information they collected. The
students will create their presentation on Emaze. For those who struggle with computer/technology use, they will
have the option to present their findings and research "old-school". (for example: poster including pictures as well
as orally discuss their findings) While the students work independently on this activity, the teacher will continue to
monitor, model, and guide students through the process.
The online survey the students complete before the project is a great way for the teacher to collect data and then
use the student data to guide student collaborations as they defend their answers or correct mistakes.
Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles and
abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide extensions and
opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)

Students with visual disabilities could benefit from magnification of their computer screen, or even use of the
SmartBoard to display the project.
Students with auditory disabilities could benefit from the audio version of the directions for using Emaze. They
could be offered headphones to wear to better listen.

Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work? Will students be
asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for answering the following
questions?
Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing?
In what ways was this lesson effective?
What went well and why?
What did not go well and why?
How would you teach this lesson differently?)
The students seemed to thoroughly enjoy being able to create their own presentation using the online tool Emaze.
They felt that their work was unique and creative because they were able to use various tools on the Internet to
create their presentation.
I monitored the students throughout the process and the only issues we encountered was slow internet
connection. The pre-assessment was a great way to start the discussion on Clouds. It gave students time to think
about what the topic would be about and how they could enhance their learning about Clouds. It also helped me
identify those who had prior knowledge of Clouds and who did not. The step by step tutorial for using Emaze was
extremely beneficial for those who were a little apprehensive about using an online tool to create their
presentation.
In the future I would have the students post their presentation to a class wiki page as well as respond to a blog
post on the subject. This would allow students to better communicate with each other using technology.
Overall, I feel that the project went very well and the students were able to complete the project successfully.
Closure: Anything else you would like to reflect upon regarding lessons learned and/or your experience with
implementing this lesson. What advice would you give others if they were to implement the lesson? Please
provide a quality reflection on your experience with this lesson and its implementation.
Through this project, I learned just how much students enjoy using technology in the learning process. Students
are able to make better and more meaningful connections with the subject being taught through the
implementation of a medium that they are already accustomed to using.
The most important thing to remember when creating a lesson like this one is to make sure that you have given
yourself plenty of time to map out all of the ideas before implementing the project. While this project was
rewarding, it took a lot of research, planning, and revising. I would suggest that when first introducing Emaze or
any type of online presentation tool, that you show the students how to use the tool versus creating a tutorial.
Most students need hands-on opportunities and also directions. Instead of creating an online tutorial, the teacher
could go through the steps on the SmartBoard as the students do the same on their Chromebooks, laptops,
iPads, etc. I would also recommend that you create a collection of resources that are readily available. By doing
this you can benefit yourself in the creation of any new project. It might also benefit one to collaborate with
