    LESSON PLAN

    Topic, class, and level:


    Multiplying Polynomials (Algebra Tiles method & distributive method), Grade 9

    Objectives. (What are you trying to do in this lesson?)

    1. Review addition and subtraction of polynomials
    2. Introduce how to multiply polynomials with algebra tiles
    a. Multiplying a polynomial by a monomial
    b. Multiplying a polynomial by a polynomial
    3. Students will practice multiplication of polynomials with algebra tiles
    4. Student will learn distributive method to multiply polynomials (introduce, and will do
    more practice next day)
    Understandings. (What do you want students to know and be able to do at the end of this
    lesson?)
    1. Students will be able to do the multiplication of polynomials

    Knowledge Outcomes. (What content knowledge do you want your students to gain as a result
    of this lesson? Please refer to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.)

    A-APR.1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely,
    they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add,
    subtract, and multiply polynomials.
    Assessment. (How will you check for student achievement and understanding?)

    Homework, classwork (algebra tiles exercise)
    Instructional Approach. (Describe activities, allotted time, and closure)

    1. (5-10 min.) Do-now problem: simplifying two polynomial operation problems, involving
    addition and subtraction, and rewrite them into standard form. Homework check.
    2. (5-10 min.) Short review of adding and subtracting polynomials with algebra tiles.
    3. (10 min.) First of all, the teacher will use the algebra tiles teaching website to explain
    how they work.

    teacher will show students both multiplying a polynomial by a monomial and multiplying
    a polynomial by a polynomial.
    4. (15 min.) Students will be divided into six groups with four students of each group. The
    teacher passes out the algebra tiles and worksheet (see attachments) to each student.
    Then, give students 5 problems, ask students to use algebra tiles to represent them. The
    teacher goes around to check each groups work.
    a. Sample questions could be: (3x + 7)(x - 4); (-2x + 4)(6x + 2); (2x
    2
    x + 3)(x
    2
    +
    3x - 1), etc.
    5. (5-10 min.) Distributive Method (Group practice without algebra tiles). In the final 5-10
    minutes, the teacher will introduce distributive method to do the multiplication of
    polynomials. The teacher will gives one example, and students do two multiplication
    polynomial problems. Students need to solve it without algebra tiles. Students will do
    more practice with this method next day.
    a. Instruction: The distributive method is the method of multiplying polynomials
    that utilizes the distributive property.




    Lets try to apply this property when multiplying two polynomials:

    First, split up the first polynomial:
    3x -5
    Then, multiply each part by the second polynomial




    Simplify by distributing.



    Combine Like terms.


    6. The teacher goes over the final independent practice questions. Assign homework due
    next time.

    1. Do the multiplying polynomials through algebra tiles

    Materials needed.

    24 packets of algebra tiles and worksheets

    Sponge activity (to soak up extra time).
