recycling in the southeast district of Singapore.
By Charissa Joy

Lead: ITE Simei and College East students volunteered in the recent South
East Clean & Green Singapore 2015 to promote environmental friendliness to
residents.

Held at Changi City Point, on November 16 last year, the carnival served as a
platform for students to showcase their works, as well as engage individuals
and families in activities through their booths such as Do-It-Yourself Recycled
Accessories Workshop and Windmill Making Workshop.

Mohamad Rafik, currently in his first year at ITE Simei, said that he enjoys
interacting with kids, and he wants to show them the beauty of recycled
materials, hence, his involvement in the event.

Participants were able to make a customised accessory or art pieces and

students had a chance to display their one-of-a-kind innovations at the
carnival.

Waste-to-Craft Competition second runner-up Chin Shi Ling designed a lamp

made out of recyclable materials like milk cartons and used bottles. She said
that she wanted to raise awareness of the wastage of recyclable materials.
Its easy to throw away after we use it, she said, we need to teach the
public some things we learn in school.

Fellow College East student Nur Hafizah said that it does not occur to people
that waste materials are so precious and can be used for future use. Both
Shi Ling and Hafizah wanted to educate the public on recycling by applying
what they have learnt in school into the activities.

ITE College East principal, Eden Liew was present to launch the Eco Kepalas
at SouthEast Schools programme alongside Guest-of-Honour, Jessica Tan,
Grassroots Adviser and Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC and host,
Mohamad Maliki Osman, Mayor of South East District.

Ms Tan applauded the two ITE schools in her speech for being actively
involved in caring for the environment by litter picking. She added that it is a
commendable effort for engaging people in cleaning our community.

ITE Simei and College East students will be involved in the programme as
Eco Kepalas or environment champions, where they will be equipped with
skills on how to further maintain a clean and green community. According to
Kiang Siang Wei, General Manager of South East Community Development,
the programme will first start with schools, as they can become our

multiplier, reaching out to their families and peers and getting them
onboard this meaningful Eco-Kepalas programme.

Ms Jessica Tan mentioned that the programme will be one that empowers
youths to be leaders, to stimulate the progress of turning Singapore into a
clean and environmentally friendly country.
