In music class this past month, 1st graders were perfecting the songs for their spring program, which will be on May 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the FHS Performing Arts Center. We added

Bunny Blues, Bunny Boogie and Dip an Egg . 2nd graders were assessed on reading,
writing, and performing the pentatonic scale. 2nd graders learned about the composer Stephen Foster and sang two of his famous songs O Susanna and Camptown Races. They

Getting Fit with Mr. Haupert
It's hard to believe the end of the year is just around the corner! Starting the week of April
13th we started baseball. With baseball we will be covering the skills needed to play the
game. We will be learning: throwing, catching, scooping, hitting and running the bases.
Along with those skills we will be playing mini games of baseball. After baseball we will be
finishing up the year with bowling. For bowling, our students will learn: stance, approach,
rolling a ball and how to keep a general score.
Mr. Romighs Art Corner
Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to get to the Fine Arts Festival and see all of our
great Riley artworks. Now that the show is over students will soon be bringing their portfolios home with all of their wonderful projects from this school year. We will be adding a few
more before that time, however. Second graders just completed a symmetrical collage and
will be moving on to a projects dealing with the art of printmaking. First graders and finishing up a collage of flowers in a vase and will next focus on and outer space scene with the
focus on using oil pastels and their ability to resist watercolor paints. These are some of my
personal favorite projects and I cant wait to see the results.
Students are to be there at 6:30 wearing red shirts and tan khaki pants (campus wear.)

It is hard to believe summer is quickly approaching and we are finishing up the school year.
Over the past month, Ginger and I have been able to visit every classroom and follow a regular schedule. The winter months really put a roadblock in our classroom guidance lessons.
In the 1st grade classrooms, we read a storybook titled, Friendship Is An Art by Julia
Cook. It is a wonderful story to teach the kids the importance of friendship and in order to
have good friends, you have to be a good friend. Students also learned it is hard to have
friends if you dont like yourself first. We concluded our lesson with the students completing an I Am Special activity to highlight the great qualities each of them have inside of
themselves.
In the 2nd grade classrooms, we began discussing their worries, fears, and excitement
they might have as they think about transitioning onto 3rd grade and a new building. Students were encouraged to write and draw their thoughts about leaving Riley and moving on.
We concluded our final lesson with a fun activity and reflected on the two years of having
classroom guidance lessons. Students discussed character traits that are valuable to them
and how they will take them onto 3rd grade. I wish the best of luck to all the 2nd graders
and will sadly miss each one of them.

Title 1 News
Here it is May already and Summer Vacation is around the corner. Please make
it a point this summer to read to your child and have them read to you each day. This will be a great
way for your child to maintain everything they have learned and maybe go up a reading level or two!
If your child wants something fun to do over the summer, keep the Summer Reading Program at
Kaubisch Library in mind.
Keep the date of May 26 open for the Title I Family Night titled SEIZE THE SUMMER. It
will be held at Riley from 5:30-7:00 and pizza and drinks will be provided. We will have stations set
up to provide reading ideas, math help games. Any child that attends will be given a free book to take
home. Current Kindergarten, First and Second Graders are invited. A registration form and invitation
will be sent with your child soon.
Teacher/Parent
I took a piece of living clay
And gently formed it day
By day,
And molded it with power and art,
A young childs soft and yielding heart.
I came again when years
Were gone,
It was a man I looked upon,
He still that early impress
Bore
And I could change that
Form no more.
