Reviewing Single Variable Equations Through Silent Discussion

(Early Release)
Teachers: Miss Baxter and Intern Mentor Teacher

Subject: 8th grade Mathematics

Standard:
8.EE.C.7 Solve Linear equations in one variable.
8.MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively
8.MP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically
8.MP.6 Attend to precision
8.MP.7 Look for and make use of structure
Objective (Explicit):
Students will be able to evaluate and solve an equation that uses the distributive property.
Students will evaluate other students work and write a critical response to the other students work.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): All students present will participate in the activity, and of those
students, 80% of the students will solve their problem correctly or revise it appropriately.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

Students will write in complete sentences.
Key vocabulary:
Materials/Technology Resources to be used:
Distributive property
Document Camera
Equations
Whiteboard
Variable
Whiteboard markers
Combine like terms
Paper
Multiplicative principle of equality
Pencils
Division principle of equality
Additive principle of equality
Subtraction principle of equality
Engage (Make content and learning relevant to real life and connect to student interest):
Sometimes, when you are working with others, there might come a time when you need to communicate
without speaking. For example, when working with a group on a project the group members often have to
communicate via email, texts, or other forms of communication. We are going to be doing a silent
discussion, in which, you need to be able to explain you thoughts on mathematical equations.
Teacher Will: The teacher will split up the
students into groups of three or four. The
teacher will explain silent discussions. The
teacher will demonstrate what each person does
for each step After that, the teacher will assign
each student one of the 5 math review problems
written on the board. During the activity, the
teacher will instruct the students when to pass
the paper, instruct the students what to do after
each time of passing the paper, and be walking
around assisting students if they need help.

Student Will: The students will write down

their assigned math problem. Then, they will
solve the problem and pass their paper to the
next person. Then, they will look at the new
paper and evaluate what that previous student
did. Then, they will write whether or not they
agree, and why in complete sentences. Then, the
students will pass the paper again. This time,
the students will explain the reasoning behind
the mathematics. After that, the students will
pass the paper to the next student. Next, the
students will write whether they agree or not
with the logic of the previous student.
Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation: The Co-Teacher will assist the teacher by walking
around, making sure that students are on task, and assist the groups that might need extra
assistance.

Evaluate: The teacher will be doing informal evaluations of the students during the class. At the end of the
lesson, the teacher will collect the silent discussion papers to evaluate what the students did.
