Safety Management
What does the word VALUE mean? If we say that Safety is a Value, what does this mean? The
dictionary defines VALUE as a principle, standard or quality considered worthwhile or desirable, a
family value. The dictionary defines a priority as a precedence established by order of importance or
urgency. Which should you chose?
If you use the VALUE definition, you are sending a message that safety is important and will not be
compromised. As the business needs change, so will the needs and focus of safety. However, if
safety is considered a value it will always be present. Another good question that should be
considered is: why does a company need a Safety program? Is it because the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration requires it or do you just want to do the right thing? The basic purpose of
any safety program is to help prevent injuries. I do not know the reference for this, but I have heard
the following statement before and I think that it fits nicely here: Managers do things right, Leaders
do the right thing.
If you were to look at the objective of regulatory requirements you will find that the Occupational
Safety and Health Administrations main objective as spelled out is: To assure safe and healthful
working conditions for working men and women.
Organizations that perform well where work involves risk are those with leadership that understand the importance of
safety. Dedication to the identification of workplace hazards and the formation of an inclusive safety culture
demonstrate leadership with a long-term view. What is it that these leaders know about safety?
Safety is efficient.
By employing certified safety professionals an organization is employing specialists who ensure their team members' work
remains productive and focused.
Safety is effective.
By preventing incidents and injury through workplace planning, training and mitigating hazards; goals are achieved and projects
are completed on schedule.
Safety is engaging.
Those who demonstrate a commitment to safety often see an increase in workplace morale as well as engagement in the
identification of potential issues before those issues become major problems, ensuring all workers go home to their families at the
end of the day.
By making safety a value of your organization, you are recognizing that safety is not the absence of incidents, but
work performed in a way that keeps incidents from happening.
Safety certification is the best method to ensure a high level of safety expertise in your organization. This is because
safety certification:
Proves safety professionals expertise by rigorous examination.
Enhances the reputation of a company by having certified individuals in safety, health, and environmental positions.
