Introduction to Health and Safety

LIVE AND WORK SAFE! STAY SAFE! KEEP THE OTHERS SAFE!

Introduction:
Health and Safety plays vital part in our personal and work life and the environment around us.
The Awareness of H&S is important for us in order to perform our day to day activities at work
and life.
The purpose of H&S is to give us knowledge of the up to date H&S laws and regulations in place
and all approved methods and action plans coming from them.

H&S plan or program has to be definite plan of action designed to prevent accidents and
occupational hazard and diseases and it must include the elements required by the H&S
regulations and legislations as a minimum.

The main provisions of these regulations require employers to provide: adequate lighting,
heating, ventilation and workspace (and keep them in a clean condition); staff facilities, including
toilets, washing facilities and refreshment; and. safe passageways, i.e. to prevent slipping and
tripping hazards

We want to emphasize on three Health and Safety key components.

1. General Health and Safety.
Occupational health and safety refers to programs, guidelines and procedures that protect the
safety, welfare and health of any person engaged in work or employment. The overall goal of any
health and safety program is to create the ultimate safe working environment and to reduce the
risk of accidents, injuries and fatalities on the job. Occupational health and safety also protects
the health of customers and the general public as well as anyone else that might be affected by
the particular working environment. When health and safety procedures are followed correctly,
they can help to prevent accidents and reduce the risk of employee injury and illness. They will
also reduce costs such as sick leave, medical care and disability benefits.

Every organization, no matter what they do, has a responsibility to uphold health and safety
standards within the workplace. These guidelines are clearly outlined if a company does not
follow them, they can be liable for any damages or accidents that occur. Not only does the
company have a legal and financial obligation to conform to health and safety standards, they
also have a moral responsibility to care for the well-being of their employees.

2. Health and Safety at Workplace

Main objectives are to provide information, training, instruction and supervision - ensure staff
are aware of instructions provided by manufacturers and suppliers of equipment. provide a safe
place of employment. provide a safe working environment. provide a written safety policy/risk
assessment.

Health and Safety at Work is important because it protects the wellbeing of employers, visitors
and customers. Looking after Health and Safety makes good business sense.
Workplaces which neglect Health and Safety risk prosecution, may lose staff, and may increase
costs and reduce profitability.
Procedures:

Health and safety procedures in the workplace reduce the employee illnesses and injuries
greatly. ... Training is important and effective, as it will educate your employees on proper
workplace procedures, practices, and behavior to prevent possible injuries and illness or
contamination from improper hygiene.

Responsibilities:
 As Employee
How does health and safety affect your day to day life on the job? If you are an employee, it is
important that you have the appropriate health and safety training for the position you are
working in. If you are working with specific hazards, such as toxic materials, heights or enclosed
spaces, you will need to have additional specialized health and safety courses for these specific
risks.

As an employee, you should always follow the correct health and safety procedures as laid out
by your employer. Don’t be tempted to cut corners to make your job easier, as you might end up
putting yourself in very serious danger.

Of course, if your employer is asking you to do something that violates health and safety
regulations, you do not have to do it. You have the right to refuse a task that puts you in
potential danger without worrying about getting reprimanded or losing your job. If your
employer disagrees, you can always enlist the help of your union or health and safety executive.

 As Employer
If you are an employer, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of your workers. Make sure
that they are properly trained in the appropriate courses and that they have been fully briefed
on the regulations of their specific job.
Ensure the workplace is kept in a safe condition at all times and never ask your workers to do a
task that violates health and safety regulations. Set a good example and foster a healthy and safe
workplace.

H&S is a very important part of the job and it is absolutely essential for a safe and well-
functioning workplace.

 Health and Safety Competent Person

According to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, a person is deemed to be a competent
person where, having regard to the task he or she is required to perform and taking account of
the size or hazards (or both of them) of the undertaking or establishment in which he or she
undertakes also Person trained and competent of the Health and Safety regulations who serves
as point of contact in case of accident and provide H&S training and guidelines on site like First
Aider, H&S Executive.

A competent person is not someone who simply has the competence to carry out a particular
task safely but training, skills and experience, that someone should have to be a competent
person to perform a specific task in a particular industry or work environment

 Health and Safety Management System

A safety and health management system is a vital part of the Organization’s management system
and should cover:
 the health and safety work organization and policy within the organization.
 the planning process for accident and ill health prevention.
 the line management responsibilities and action.
 the practices, procedures and resources for development and implementation.
 the reviewing and maintaining the occupational safety and health policy.
The system should cover the entire set of an employer's occupational health and safety
organization.

3. Kids Health and Safety

Keeping children of all ages safe and healthy is one of the most important tasks of the child
wellbeing. Understanding of the major issues affecting the health and safety of children; know
how to establish and maintain an environment that ensures each child’s healthy development,
safety, and nourishment; understand health record keeping and its policy considerations; know
how to implement food safety practices, menu planning, nutrition activities for children, CPR,
First Aid, and accident and infectious disease prevention.

An early care and education program promotes good health and nutrition and provides a safe
environment for children. Basic health and safety management procedures contribute to the
prevention of childhood illness and communicable diseases. A safe environment prevents and
reduces injuries for young children who are only beginning to recognize dangerous situations.
Good nutrition is important to the physical and intellectual development of young children.
Meals and snacks are used to encourage good nutritional eating habits.

The Health and Safety awareness and training in the early stages of Children’s life will teach
them of better understanding of the environment around them and best habits and practices to
keep themselves safe, healthy and smiling all the time.
