participate in meaningful discussion with their book talk partner.

Procedures
1. Students will gather on the carpet for morning meeting. They will bring their I-pads and
reading materials.

I am looking for a friend who does this quickly and quietly.

Good morning friends! Today we are going to high five our partners and tell them
good morning. Remember, when you high five your friend you make eye contact
with them and say good morning and their name.

2. We need to find the missing parts to our message. Would someone like to begin by
reading the date for us? 10-10-14
What is another way we could write the date? October 10, 2014

Goo_ mornin_!

Friend_ , we have a very special day today! Today i_ our field tri_ ! W__ nee_ to
remember th__ expectations. W__ also have p_cture day th_s m_rning. It is
importan__ that you liste_ and follow expectations today.

Love, Ms. Cash

Now that we have completed our message we can read it. Get your reading voices ready!

3. Now we are going to sing our vowels song.
Boys and girls will alternate between singing each line

4. Now we will turn on our I-pads. Please take a minute or two to review your popplet
and gather your thoughts. You will use your popplet to retell your story to your talk
partner. I will listen to book talks to choose someone for our fish bowl this morning.

5. As students turn and talk with their partners, the teacher will listen in on each group
assessing for meaningful book talk discussions. Students should discuss their five
finger retell. The setting, characters, problems, and solution.

6. The teacher will select a partnership that models the appropriate book talk
discussion. This partnership will sit in the middle of the carpet with their peers
seated in a circle around them. The partners will model their discussion for their
peers (students are the main focus in the middle of the fish bowl). The teacher will
video the fishbowl discussion on the ipad and uploads it to the partners website.

7. Whole group discussion questions:

-What did you notice about this book talk that you could use in your own
partnership?

-Why is this important?

-Give some examples of the things they did?

8. We really want to have powerful book talks within our partnerships. We can use the
strategies demonstrated today to have more meaningful discussion in our book
talks.

Activity Analysis
The first activity has students decode words to determine missing letters and sounds. Students use
the content of the message and decoding strategies to identify missing pieces. Students play I spy
using the morning message to detect certain letters, endings, sounds, etc. This engages learners and
encourages them to use reading strategies. Students sing a song about vowels. The technology used
for this activity includes a cd player and cd with the song. This is a great activity for the entire class
especially students with ADD/ADHD because it provides an opportunity to sing and move.

The second activity focuses on partnership discussions used during readers workshop. Students will
use their I-pads and an application called popplet. Students created a popplet that retells a story
they read. They use their popplet to retell their story in meaningful discussion to their partner. The
teacher selects a partnership and they model their discussion for their peers and they are also
videoed. This is a very hands-on and engaging activity that students enjoy. Students are able to use
the manipulative support of the I-pad to build effective discussion strategies.

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor
Students are seated on the carpet in assigned spots and the morning message is visible to all
students. Students that have difficulty staying focused sit at the front near the teacher to ensure they
are staying on task.
