Proficiencies:(Mathematics only) Lesson Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: Correctly identify a location (i.e. Australia, or one of its capital cities) using Google Earth. Verbally and visually observe, discuss and estimate distances, differences and locations between Australia and other countries. Using an online quiz, demonstrate sound knowledge of names of places and identify specific locations in and around Australia.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organization: 10 ipads pre-prepared with the online quiz and Google Earth installed Set of instructions to accompany and reiterate verbal instructions
Provision for students at educational risk: Students who demonstrate difficulty with concentration will be reminded to keep on task, and should be closely monitored by supervising teacher to ensure Ipads are treated with respect and the privilege is not abused. High-achieving students who finish tasks quickly will have the option to continue ahead as there will be a visible list of instructions to follow. Pairing students with beneficial partners.

Show the students a short video-clip consisting of landmarks and nature images. Ask students to casually call out what they see. The teacher will then show the students what they need to do to complete todays activity and how they are going to show the teacher that they have completed it and understood the task. Today we are going use Google Earth again, but you are going to show me where you think particular locations are.

In this task, you are going to demonstrate that you know the names of some places, and you are going to try and identify other locations that might seem interesting to you. You will be given an iPad and there will be an online quiz with instructions that you need to follow. Have fun!

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions): 1. Teacher calls attention towards the front of the class. For the purpose of this activity students are allocated into pairs and one person out of the group is to come up to the front and take an ipad. They will then return to their seats, and they are reminded not to play with ipad until instructed to do so. Ipads on the desk, no hands until you are told! 2. Teach reiterates instructions and demonstrates how to access the Quia. This may need to be repeated a couple of times, to ensure complete understanding of task. (Class has a Kidblog in which instructions will be available for them to peruse at their leisure). The link to the Quia is found within the Kidblog, and this will be posted just prior to the lesson, so that it is at the top and easily accessible. Students commence the task at instruction of Teacher.

Teacher will be available to answer any questions during the lesson, as they will be roaming and supervising diligently. . Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students) 1. To conclude the lesson, ensure that students have understood and completed the Quia. Direct them to a link that shows them their own results. Make them aware that they can only view their own results, and assure them that their results will not be published for others to see. Teacher will able to view results via Grades, on Quia, and make observations and assessments accordingly.

Teacher will be using Quia to assess this task and plan accordingly for next lesson. As this task is a little advanced, this may need to be repeated as a secondary lesson to consolidate learning.
Checklist will include The teacher will be able to see who has and who has not understood or grasped the concepts; this makes it easier for the teacher to see who needs help and who is excelling in this outcome.
