Design Cycle
Unit 2
Community Architecture: Solving Social and
Environmental Issues Through Design

Grade 9________
Name : _____________________

The Design Cycle Stages

1. The Design Cycle has four stages: Investigate, Plan, Create and
Evaluate. During the Investigate Stage you do all the things you have
to find out about your problem and gather information so that you have
a good idea what you are going to make.
2. The Plan Stage is when you take your good idea of what you are going
to make and think carefully about exactly how it will be made. You can
experiment with different ideas (prototyping) and get some ideas from
other people (user feedback). Once you have a definite idea what you
are going to make you have finished the Plan Stage.
3. During the Create Stage you make your solution. This could mean that
you are creating something a computer, or creating a solution out of a
material resource. Once for have finished making your solution you
need to check that it is going to solve the problems. If you are satisfied
that it will you have a final product.
4. Evaluation means making a judgment as to the success of the project.
You will be evaluating two things: firstly how effective was your
product at solving the solution, secondly how well did you do during
the project.

Technology Project
1. When you do a project in Technology, you will be trying to solve a
problem. The project will go through a number of stages. Each stage
will have a theme, for example finding out about the problem or
situation. These themes mean that tasks can be grouped. The
grouping of the tasks give you the stages of the Design Cycle.

2. During your project, you will keep a record of what you do, what you
have learnt, and what you feel. This is called your Process Journal.
3. Once you have finished a stage of the Design Cycle you will write-up
what you did and what you found out. You do this by writing a Design
Folder. This is a report on what you did at that stage of the project.
4. When you have finished your project, your Design Folder is submitted
for marking. Your Design Folder needs to contain all the evidence that
will get you marks. There are a set of Criteria that are published by the
IBO. These are what your teacher use to decide if you get a 3 or a 4
out of 6 for your Planning skills or a 5 or 6 out of 6 for your Create
skills. If you can show your very best work so that you have the best
chance to get the best mark.

Investigation
Criteria A: Investigate
Outcomes
Identify the problem
Formulate and discuss appropriate questions that guide the
investigation
Explain the problem and discussing its relevance
Evaluate the information from a broad range of appropriate and
acknowledge sources
Develop a design brief
Formulate design specification
Design tests to evaluate the product/solution against the design
specification
Identify the Problem
This is the first page and you must introduce your project here. First write
about the problem. Why do you think you need or want to make it? What the
things make you are interested to the project. Think about your own reason
and explain it.
The Design Brief
This is where you write a short statement of intent.
You could write more in this section but the specification is where you will
write all the details.
Formulate Questions
You develop some questions, which guide you to do your project. The
questions will help you to find out what you need to consider or prepare in
your project.
3

Evaluate and acknowledge sources

You do research from variety of sources and evaluate the result. Dont forget
to add sources, from the internet, magazine, photos, ect.
Design test to evaluate the product/solution against the design
specification
When you imagine the product that you will create from your investigation
result, what criteria you will use to judge the result (check your design
specification).

Identify the problem

4

Formulate questions to guide your investigation

1.
Will the product be functional or not?
2.
Will other people interested to buy the product? (If you sell it)
3.
Why you choose this product to become your design?
4.
Is the product will be useful to other people?
5.
What are the materials needed to make the product?
6.

Design Brief
(How you will response to the challenge and how you will solve the problem)
For the design, I will make bracelets or jewelry out of wire, as my product. As
you know many people have used bracelets as accessories. So of course is
functional for their daily life as their accessories. If I sell it, many people will
get interested to buy if the result is good. I choose this design because its
easier to make and it will be very useful to other people. My bracelets will
include some letters, and stone in it so it will be innovative. Bracelets, and
rings are the most jewelry that used by many people. Usually when I go out
with my family I like to use bracelets but not in school.

Evaluate Information
A. Primary Resources
Questions
1. Will the product be functional or not?
2. Will other people interested to buy the product? (If you sell it)
3. Why you choose this product to become your design?
4. Is the product will be useful to other people?
5. What are the materials needed to make the product?

Summary: I dont think a bracelet is
very functional, but I think that it will
still be a functional product. If she
ever decides to sell it, I think it will be
interesting enough to catch peoples
attention. I think she chose this
design because making bracelets are
simple and fun to make. I think the
product will only be useful to girls
because only girls wear bracelets, but
it will be useful to them when they
want to wear accessories. She will
need wire, scissors, stone, and a plier
to shape the wire.

Name : Jesslyn
Date: 29/01/14
Summary:
I think the product not really functional
because not all people wear the
bracelets. Maybe other people will
interested to buy on your product if
your result look nice and easy to use.
Maybe its more look simple and not
as hard as you thought to make the
bracelets. In one situation, other
people may use these bracelets as
their accessories. Maybe she will
need wire, glue, beads or stone to
make the product.

Evaluate Information
B. Secondary Resources
Source
What can you evaluate from this
information?
I got this idea from
Plus
http://lc.pandahall.com/articles/145
Some of the website said that its
innovative to make a bracelets and its
6-tutorial-on-making-a-coiled-wiremore simple and I can learn it by
bracelet-with-violet-red-jademyself.
beads.html on how to make a coiled
wire bracelet with violet red jade
Minus
beads.
The website say that its hard to make
a bracelets; its easier to make hanger
no need to put some accessories in it.

Conclusion..what is the good idea you want to adapt to solve your problem?
By asking some other peoples help to conduct good result for the product. Need more
time to buy the materials needed and take a longer time to finish the product. Also
find some resources from Internet to get the idea more by finding more resources I
know how to make it.

I got this idea from:

http://lc.pandahall.com/articles/698cool-bracelet-making-idea-how-tomake-stunning-wire-bracelet.html
on how to make cool stunning wire
bracelet.

Plus
I can learn how to make on bracelets
from this website and I think its easy
to make bracelets.

Minus
Some of the website doesnt say the
steps to make the bracelets.

Interesting

Summary

items, what are they and why do you want to change it?
For model 1, I feel happy and it suitable with my planning in my design
specification. Maybe I want to change the size or the diameter of the
bracelets; if it is too small or big I will change the size to fit on my hand.

Conclusion: Which model they like the most from your design? Will it change
your choice? Why do you think mostly people like that particular model?
Most of them choose the model 1 because they said that its more simple and
cute, rather than the model 2 its more complicated. So I probably will make
the model 1, because its more easier to make and more simple. Most of the
people like the simple on rather than the complicated one. If I make the model
2, its more hard and need a longer time to do it.
Evaluate the design against design specification
Tips: Transform the data from survey to bar and pie graphs
Figure 1. Bar Graph

Figure 2. Pie Graph

Conclusion: What is your final decision about your design and design
specification that you have planned?
I will plan to make the bracelets model 1,because I think many people
interested in model 1 and its simpler and more easier to make, no need a
longer time to do it. I trust my plan 100% successfully work and the design will
look 110 % successful. I really believe it because I have many sources to
make the bracelets, and I have the link to guide me to make it
Select one final design and evaluate why you choose it
Model 1

16

Evaluation for your choice. Why you choose this model as your final design.
I will choose the model 1, because I already said that its simpler and easier to
make and no need a longer time to do it. Beside that, I also like the model 2
its looked more creative and innovative but its hard to make it and need a
longer time. It takes shorter time to make the model 1 and I only need 2
weeks to make it.

EVALUATE
Criteria E: Evaluate
Outcomes
Carry out test to evaluate the product/solution against the design
specification.
Evaluate the success of the product/solution in an objective manner
based on testing, their own views and the views of the intended user.
Evaluate the impact of the product/solution on individuals and on
society.
Explain how the product/solution could be improved.
Evaluate their performance at each stage of the design cycle.
Suggest ways in which their performance could be improved.
A good evaluation should be an honest appraisal of your work. Even if you
think that your product is not as good as you would have liked, you can still
produce a very good evaluation there may be more to write about!
1. Meeting Specifications. Look back at your Product Specifications
and ask yourself if you have met those requirements. List each
specification and describe how you were successful or otherwise in
reaching it.
2. Successful Points. What, in your opinion, did you do really well during
the project? It could be your designing planning, or the general
accuracy, finish and presentation of your work. Other aspects could be
the effectiveness of your design e.g. is it aesthetically pleasing or does
it work effectively?
3. Least Successful Points. What in your opinion hasnt work very well
and for what reason? Are there areas that you need to work upon to
improve your skill? Relate your comments to the points listed above.
4. Problems. Did you encounter any unexpected problems along the
way? What were they and how did you overcome them did you need
to change your design in some way from your original plans before of
these problems?
5. Modifications/Improvements. Now that you have gained experience
in making your product, what would you do to improve it if you had to
make another one? Sketch and annotate your new proposals,
explaining why the changes would be made.
6. Management of Project. Do you think that you were well organized/
did you spend too much or too little time working on some areas of
your project?

7. Peer to Peer. Have you ask your class for feed back on your end
product. What do they think? Make a questionnaire. Use
graphs to illustrate results.
