Remember to consider the following prompts as you compose your terminal report.
1. Who do you want to solve a problem for? What do they need solutions for? What are
your insights and takeaways from your empathy work?
There is currently a stationary ‘hoarding’ problem in our household since we had a bulk
purchase of papers, pens, and printer necessities to continue with our online learning without
having the need to risk ourselves buying outside and be in contact with other people in the midst
of the pandemic. We did not anticipate the effects of stocking-up and ended up with a
disorganized situation especially with ballpens and pencils - which are easily lost when not
placed inside a pencil case. Therefore, I have to make use of this situation to come up with an
idea that is creative and innovative in solving this problem. It is important to determine the users
of this design challenge and seek out their insights and suggestions to cater their needs and
wants. That's why I held a small meeting with my siblings, who are the main users of pens, and
addressed the problem that we usually don’t pay attention to.
2. What is the challenge? How did you determine this to be a challenge for your target
users? Why is this a challenge?
The challenge to create an organizer from scratch with zero experience in construction
and building is one of the challenges of this project. It was also difficult for my siblings to be
convinced to build a personalized organizer since it is very easy to purchase online but still
agreed that it is better to use our personal touches through our combined ideas. We also have
a limited budget but agreed to use the scrap wood that was used from the recent renovation we
had in our house.
3. What ideas can you offer? How did you come up with these ideas? What are the most
promising ideas that you want to consider exploring further? How did you determine that
these are the promising ideas worth further exploration?
They initially suggested complex designs to be used in the organizer, but one of my
siblings suggested that it is better to be practical considering our skills in carpentry is not at the
professional level. We decided to build a simple yet systematic kind of an organizer. Instead of
building a normal pen holder or organizer, we added some drawers that would fit erasers and
notepads to make use of the space below. Then, the top space is divided into sections fit for
different kinds of pens (ballpens, colored pens, pencils, and markers). The current suggestion
that we wanted to go for in the future is the rotating pen holder since it is more efficient and
innovative if we can achieve that project.
4. How did you make these promising ideas come to life? How did you assess their
potential to address the challenge? What were the issues you encountered in
prototyping and testing these solutions? How did you address these issues to move
forward to the succeeding iterations?
We are currently not in the process of making the actual pen organizer but we have
been collecting the materials that are needed to be used for the project. Our only concern is the
construction of the pen organizer and how we need to be concise in our measurements, cutting,
installation, and painting. We will go through these issues with the help of construction videos
online and make sure to follow safety precautions when using equipment such as drills or saws
to avoid any accidents in the future.
5. What were your key takeaways from the experience of going through your own design
challenge at home?
I think the most important takeaway from this design challenge experience is the
creativity and resourcefulness of this project. We have a limited budget and time to make a
personalized pen organizer but it would be a successful challenge to showcase our efforts
considering the lack of carpentry skills that we have. It is important to have at least one building
experience to be familiar with the different fields of engineering and to learn a bit of survival
skills for future purposes.
It is challenging to come up with a design that we can all agree with since there are too
many ideas that we want to put up in our pen organizer. It was important for us to be practical at
this point since we have zero construction or building experience which resulted our design to
be very simple and
