The year is already in full swing!
Halloween is coming! In order to celebrate this fun holiday, some students have taken on the task of creating their own costumes for extra credit math. From iPhones and at screen TVs to Snickers bars and soccer balls, students always come up with creative, well-crafted costumes! This year the Halloween Parade will be a bit different than in years past. Rather than the parents being on the outside of the circle and the

students running around on the inside, students will march around the track while the parents shoot photos from eld. Please be prepared for this change on Halloween day. Students will participate in a fun Halloween party following the parade. By recess time, students will change back into their regular attire which theyll wear for the rest of the school day.

THE SIGN OF THE BEAVER We are almost done with our rst class book - The Sign of the Beaver. This classic story focuses on the life of Matt, a thirteen-year-old boy holding down the fort in rural Maine in the late 1700s. While his father journeys to Massachusetts to get his mother and sisters, Matt encounters and interacts with the local Native Americans. To his surprise, he discovers that they are a wise and generous people, and has the opportunity to share some of his knowledge with them, as well. Now that we are nished with the reading we have begun to watch the movie version of this classic tale. S t u d e n t s a re t a k i n g n o t e s o n similarities and dif ferences in preparation for their rst essay. Using the proper multi-paragraph format students will compare and contrast these two pieces of work. Students will be working slowly through the essay writing process in class so that they have full mastery by the time they are asked to write research reports or essays independently.

BUDDY CLASS We are so lucky to have Mrs. Amarnaths third grade as our buddy class! Once a month we invite our third grade buddies to join us in Room 12 to complete an assignment together. Our rst assignment involved creating a venn diagram of the similarities and differences between ourselves and our buddies. It was amazing to see how many things 5th and 3rd graders share, as well as to appreciate the differences between them.
Thanksgiving is fast a p p r o a c h i n g, a n d t h a t means that a special day is just around the corner. All of the fth graders will participate in our annual Native American Arts & Crafts Day. In groups of students combined from our four fth grade classrooms, students will rotate through Native American craft stations which will teach them about the crafts and lifestyles of Native Americans. In addition to being fun and informative, this enables

impressed by the maturity my students show as they present their strengths, work samples and goals with their parents. This year was no exception. Students made insightful observations about their learning styles and areas needing improvement. Remember to look for your childs Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 goals in the December report card envelope, as well as the notes taken during the conference.
