In honor of the new cover re-design (which seriously needed to happen cuz that old cover was NOT doing the book any favors), I thought I'd take a moment to give a shout out to Magic Bites, which is the first book of my most absolute favorite series ever.
I love this series for so many reasons:
Kate Daniels is the BEST female lead character out there. She is funny, strong, mysterious, caring, loyal and above all, the woman can seriously kick some ass. The supporting characters are done just as well as Kate. So many times, the side characters are existing just to showcase how awesome the main character is, but that is not the case here. Each one is fully fleshed out and I can never decide who is my favorite. As to the world-building - it is done in a way that I have seen few authors perfect. This fascinating alternate Atlanta with its fluctuating hits of magic and technology and paranormal creatures that live among humans is revealed in bits and pieces and rather than confusing me, it just worked. Then there's the romance. I'm going to go all Goldilocks on you and say that there is not too much, not too little, it is juuust right. The build-up is slow and absolutely satisfying.
The problem with so many long running series is that, although they often start out great, as the years go on they just start to fizzle out. The characters say words, they act out scenes, but things are just going...nowhere really. Not so with this series, it is going somewhere OH BOY is it going somewhere. Each successive book has steadily and surely been building up to a showdown of such epic proportions that I for one, cannot wait to see.
Note: for this new paperback edition, I enjoyed the little additions of Curran's point of view for a few scenes, particularly the one at Fernando's, and also the Questionable Client short, which I had not read before.

Hey Amanda, sorry, I never saw your comment until just now :(
Yeah, I agree the new cover does feel a little YA. But still, I like it way WAY better than the original one (yucks) :)

LOL. Yeah, the original cover was awful. I had the first 3 books for YEARS before I got around to reading them, b/c BAD cover. And just in case you didn't already have this:

I DIDN'T, oh my gosh THANK YOU!! I just downloaded it and took a quick look - I think I've read most of them, but there may be a couple in there that I haven't yet. *exciting!* Thanks :)

I'M SO GLAD YOU FINALLY STARTED IT TOO! :) Now I shall have fun watching you go through the series. For real, it just keeps getting better and better (but the last two are toss-ups with many differing reactions -- I'll be very curious to see it goes for you!)
