Didn't finish. I simply stopped reading this book today, and it wasn't because it was boring or anything like that. I just did not care for Mafi's writing style. The over use of metaphors and strikeout tools caused a constant distraction, and the book was just not interesting enough for me to want to struggle through something that annoyed me so much.
The book (well what I got to, anyway) read like a super annoying IM by a 12 year old girl that just learned what a metaphor is. Do we REALLY need 50 to 100 different ways to describe his eyes? She repeats things so many times as well, and it's like she used a bunch of tools that could have been great devices had she used them once or twice. Instead she chose to beat the metaphors, strikeouts, and repetitions into your head so many times you just end up really, really, really, really wanting to kill yourself stop reading.
This book was one of the biggest disappointments of 2011 for me, and I still cannot understand why anyone would enjoy this book, let alone say this author has talent. When I read the synopsis, I thought this book sounded so good. This could have been an amazing story, but sadly the execution was horrible.

Nope, you're right. It blows my mind to see that this book has a 4+ star rating here on Goodreads...Usually I don't ever say anything THIS harsh about a book, but I couldn't help it just this once.

Your not being harsh at all, you know I would recommend this book to a certain type of people that would of been harsh if you did that.

HAHAHA.. looks like people either love or hate the craziness of the writing. Love the comparison.

Oh, that's very true. You don't see many people in between with this book. Like I said to another poster I am usually not this harsh in reviews, but this book was so annoying I felt the need to give a little back for the time I wasted.:-)

It seems that people either love or hate the writing style of this book. But I have also seen reviewers express criticism of the world-building and the fact that the main female character is the only beautiful and positively portrayed female in the whole book. I gave the sample a try and I kind of liked it, but not enough to buy the book.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Reading this review you probably would assume that I hate any purple prose or flowery writing, but I really don't...I just felt like having literally 3-5 metaphors on each page (some of which don't make sense) was a bit much.

Best one sentence summary for this book! Your whole review is full of win, but this sentence was totally awesome.

Thanks Meg for putting this review up. I thought this book was awful, and you put into words what I was thinking the whole time. Luckily you didn't finish it, because the end was the worst part!
The writing style sounds terrible, awful, dreadful, horrific, atrocious, appalling, lamentable, ghastly.
In fact, you could say that the book is like a soggy wad of paper that you wouldn't even use to prop up the short leg of a wobbly coffee table.
Thanks for yet another honest opinion Meg ♥. Your reviews are helpful.

No problem lol I would never want anyone to read this and possibly hate it as much as I did and blame me for it. ;-)

Aww I'm sad you didn't like it. I really loved this book.
I loved the repetitions and the strikeouts. I felt like the repetitions really gave you insight into her condition. With her being locked up for so long it really does have a Psychological effect on you and I thought Mafi dealt with it incredibly and I thought the strikeouts really showed insight into the characters feelings and thoughts.
Great review though.

Yeah you bring up some good points, and I'm sure that being locked up would effect anyone psychologically. That's primarily why I said that had she used them sparingly they would have been unique and interesting tools, but her writing just made me feel like she overused EVERYTHING and it seemed very amateur. Not that I'm a writing expert or anything. lol
Trust me when I say that I am also sad I didn't like it. I got it as soon as it came out and I wanted to love it!

I enjoy everyone's review whether or not it's good or bad. I love reading everyone's perspective and opinion about why they liked/disliked this book.
The only thing that caught me was when you wrote, '...I still cannot understand why anyone would enjoy this book, let alone say this author has talent.' We all have different tastes in different things: whether it's from a novel we've read, or food we eat, clothes we wear, etc. etc. Not everyone is going to like/dislike this. I enjoyed this because it was a different writing style -- the repetitions and the strike outs; how they wanted to use Juliette as a weapon for her strength/power, how she, in the end, finds shelter when she escapes and discovers other people with 'superpowers'. It's all very interesting... to me at least. :)

I completely understand that everyone has different tastes, and I don't need that spelled out for me... which is why I'm glad that recently I have been getting a good response to this review, because just like "Shatter Me" not everyone is going to like/dislike this. I didn't say "this author is a talentless hack and it's the worst book ever". I simply said I personally don't understand why anyone would like this. Until Kay commented today (and now you as well) I had never gotten any legit reasons to why anyone does like it. I like seeing reviews that differ from mine as well. Otherwise I wouldn't have written this review in the first place. Of course I knew many people would disagree. As far as this story goes I think I admitted the story seemed interesting? If not I meant to, because it seemed great and I clarified it was just the writing that ruined it for me.

I think this book was awful. If I had to give some reasons I would say the same as you plus the fact that she added random characters in the end, and Julliet was the only girl so every guy fell for her despite her stupidity and how dangerous she was.
The diversity of opinions, and the openness of members to listen to opinons that diammetrically opose their own, is something which I love about Goodreads.
I really good example of this, for me, comes with my review of The Magic Mountain. I know for a fact that I am in the minority, in the world, in disliking this book and thinking it to be thoroughly boring. Nevertheless, I respect the opinions of the vast majority, including some learned scholars, that this is the greatest piece of literature to ever come out of Germany.
Wouldn't life be so humdrum without such marvelous diversity?!

i wrote to the author regarding her writing style, and asked if she intentionally used runns and repetition to sort of make the main character come off as manic and crazy, and at time shattered....no answer from her. if it was intentional, i tihnk it was brilliant, if it wasn't, then it was dreadful....see, i haven't written my review yet because i'm waiting to find out...
I'm on page 36 and I feel like really giving up on this book. I convince myself that I can learn to be interested on a book even if others don't find it interesting but the writing style and the use of words..ugh. Can't take it anymore. Nice review, I feel the same way.
