This was so good. Much better than the first book. If you've read my review of This Savage Song you might know that I only rated it three stars. I struggled with the characters - especially Kate - and the predictability. Overall it just wasn't as spectacular as Schwab's previous novels. This one, however, was a huge improvement.
Where do I start? The plot was much more exciting and fast-paced. The characters felt more real and were more relatable, because of the character development they went through. And while August's and Kate's arch-enemies were a little washed up - the typical cruel and smart villains - they served their purpose. My favourite character is Ilsa. I honestly love everything about her, her grace, her wisdom, her trust in her brother and Kate.
And the writing! Don't even get me started. I wish I could write like this amazing and very talented woman. She keeps taking my breath away with her words and I'm so glad for every story she creates.
This is one of my favourite quotes from the book:
"There would always be cracks in the surface, shadows in the light, a hundred degrees of grey between black and white."
I still have so many questions about the Chaos Eater, though. Where did he come from? What cruel act created such a destructive and powerful monster? How exactly can he be killed? I wish there would have been more of a backstory to this.
The ending was on point. I think that is one of the most important things an author needs to do: keeping things real. With all these monsters, superpowers and other paranormal activities, it's easy to lose your head in the clouds. That's where many authors become distracted and the plot slips into absurdity (yes, I'm talking about you, Sarah J. Maas). This was also my problem with A Conjuring of Light. But this time, Victoria nailed it. (view spoiler)
One thing that bothered me is something that I can only talk about in another hidden spoiler section. (view spoiler)
In a nutshell: A spectacular and nearly perfect conclusion to this amazing series. Highly recommended!

Same with the Chaos Eater, I have so many questions and it was a very interesting monster to let it's story rest like that. Also, I didn't understand the kiss scene either, it's clear that they are not really a match in terms of romance and the whole scene just created another unanswered question as why did all of the soul thing happen. By the way, can we talk about Soro and Ilsa, both of them should have gotten so much more of a storyline, so much potential wasteddd

YES. But I think that it was makes them more interesting, that we don't know all about them. That's what I love/hate about stories, when I don't know all the details and backgrounds and answers but really want to. The thing is, if I had all the answers, I would stop wondering. I've read books before that had an explanation for everything and that made it less intriguing and I stopped caring. Of course, it's a whole nother story when there are too many loose ends and hence illogical. But Victoria is a talented storyteller and it's not the case with this series :)

I think even with that kiss I can say this series isn’t romantic at all what so ever. I agree that it was still kind of out of place tho. I figured the reason why Schwab included it was to show what could have been if Kate had not died. Like to maybe show a hint of possibility. But still, even if Kate had lived, I don’t think Schwab would have created a romantic relationship there. I just don’t think that kiss meant anything enough to classify it as romantic. Idk lol. I feel yah tho.

Good point, though. I'd love to know what she would say when asked why she included that kiss.

Thank you :)
Thank you :)
HEY! I also loved this book and also wondered what and who was the chaos eater and where did he come from??? I wish there was a third book to make it into a trilogy hehe
AND ALSO. I think Sarah J Maas' plots are pretty intricate and detailed & I don't think her plots slip into "absurdity". Especially, TOG series--I LOVED AND WOULD REREAD all 6 books! bc i loved them all! I think the plots of the diff characters all connected in the end. i like how she weaves everything together. (just my opinion hehe:)

Nah I'm glad it's a duology, sometimes series should stay the way they are. *points finger at Cassandra Clare* But obviously I still want to know more about the Chaos Eater :D

Well in that case we need to agree to disagree :D cause I think her plots (and books) are overloaded and overall too much. Not all the time but often enough.
