“People were messy. They were defined not only by what they'd done, but by what they would have done, under different circumstances, molded as much by their regrets as their actions, choices they stood by and those they wished they could undo. Of course, there was no going back - time only moved forward - but people could change."
Okay first off, if you have yet to read this book or series, I suggest you listen to the audiobook. Therese Plummer does an amazing job at the narration. I know for a fact I felt a lot more emotions listening to it than I would have if I read it.
This book was far from a disappointment. In fact, I didn't find myself bored at all during a single scene. It is far better than the first book in many aspects, such as: character development, action, writing style, and narration. If you thought the first book was dark, then this book is just downright nasty for a YA. The second installment was dauntingly dark and gritty. Not only do we get August and Kate's point of views, but we also get Sloan's. Schwab does a compelling job at writing from a villain's POV. Reading Sloan's inner blood thirsty and sadistic thoughts was SO GOOD! What can I say? I'm a masochist.
Our Dark Duet kicks off 6 months after This Savage Song ends. Kate made her way to Prosperity after the fall of her father, Callum Harker. She makes her own little squad over there. Kate becomes a working girl in a coffee shop by day, and monster hunter by night. There's a new monster in town, and its not a Corsai, a Malchai, or a Sunai. When Kate stumbles across this new monster, and finds out it's making it's way toward Verity, she knows she needs to warn the people and help take it down. I loved the entire book, but i'll admit...I was waiting desperately for the Kate and August reunion. I love the way they team up and fight together. And their friendship only got more special in this book.
Victoria Schwab might just be my new favorite author.
This entire book was perfection. Even the miserable ending was perfect. BUT SCHWAB...YOU BETTER SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN WOMAN BECAUSE WWWHHHYYYYYYY?!?!?! Jk I still love you. But on a serious note, I was BAWLING. It's a good thing I wasn't reading the book because I wouldn't have been able to see the pages. It's that fucking audiobook that did it man. That narrator was feelin' it!
Anyway, that's how a final war scene should be. It's war...and in war...people get seriously hurt. Even fictional books should be realistic in that aspect. Every main character can't come out without at least one of them missing finger. They can't come out only with little scratches and be all perfectly perfect again. Our Dark Duet ended on an exemplary note, and I don't think it could have been better. TEAM SCHWAB ALL THE WAY!
