Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1)

4.5 stars
Five members of the Canterbury's crew leave to respond to a distress signal on the transport vessel, Scopulia. It's abandoned when they get there but before they can get back to their ship they are witness to the attack and destruction of the ice hauler by an unknown ship.
After a bit of Scooby-Dooing, they realize that the distress signal was Martian. Jim Holden is the officer in charge and he makes the fateful decision to broadcast that information across the universe, setting cataclysmic events in motion that will affect the people of Earth, Mars, & the Belt.
Meanwhile, Joe Miller works for a private security that provides a sort of police force at Cerces Station (on the asteroid belt) and is volunteered by his boss to track down Julie Mao, the missing daughter of a wealthy tycoon. She has disowned her family and was working for a group of rebels known as the OPA, but has recently disappeared. As Miller learns more about her, he develops feelings for this young woman who gave up everything to fight for the rights of Belters.
She becomes almost an alter ego in his mind that speaks to him and drives him to keep searching for her even after he has been ordered to let her case go.
And that's just the bare basics of the story.
This is a fully realized sci-fi world with layers upon layers of complex plotlines and rich characters. I had a feeling when I was done that I just scratched the surface of James Corey's tale, and I am looking forward to listening to Jefferson Mays narrate the rest of the books for me.
If you dig sci-fi, you'll dig this.
And if you liked The Expanse television show, you should check out the amazing books that spawned the series.
Highly Recommended.

Cool! Glad you’re getting into this series, did you watch the show at all (or only in GIF form)? 😂

I just finished the show (after a bumpy start) and not sure if the books are worth the effort...the audio version though...
Anne did the books help explain things that were unclear in the show? i got lost after season 2.
i watched a few episodes of season 3 and was like "what is going on? are they speaking english? did i miss like 10 episodes somewhere?????!!!!"

Thanks for the tip ;)

I don't know! I stopped watching after season 1 and that's kind of where the book stops, too. It's definitely different, as you don't have all the cast of political characters that are in the show.
I'll read the next book and then watch the next season to see, I guess.

Happy reading."
It only gets better! It takes a while for all of the storylines to really come together, but it's worth it.
Enjoy!

I read this years ago and really liked it, but never picked it back up again. Reading your review may encourage me to go back and start over again with the first one. They're just so long! Still, great stuff. I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks for the review. The series has been on the back burner but maybe time to start it. Sounds interesting.
Reading the books first allows your mind to fills some blanks while you watch the show. I actually always wondered whether people who hadn’t read the books would find the show confusing. That said, it’s my favourite SF show; I’ve watched it through 5 times!

I probably would have never made the effort if it hadn't been for the audiobook, so I know exactly what you mean. These books are daunting when you're staring at the physical tome.

Are the rest of the books as good as this one?

Yes, and there are actually some divergences from the show. Plus, the last three books go beyond where the show ended. The novellas are also recommended; a lot of that material is covered in the show also.
Oh, ok! I like it when they kind of each do their own things. I've got to finish up the audiobooks I've got right now and then I can go on to the next book in the series.
I have got this on the TBR list. Glad you liked it because you know, you and I are right about everything, all those other people on Goodreads, I am not so sure about

You've just nailed how I feel about the two of us having such better taste than everyone else. Pfft. Peasants...

Love the expanse books, best sci-fi series in years. Characters that are actually people (as opposed to a collection of traits in a people shaped container), with just enough of a hint of 'oddness' in the series to bring you in to the world.

Haha! You just follow them to see if Dave will jump on a thread and start taking it somewhere weird. I know how you are! lol

I have the next four books in the series sitting on my bookshelf and I haven't yet had the courage to pick them up. I don't know why! Leviathan Wakes also gave me a huge book hangover that led to a month long reading slump. It was that good but also crippling! Haha
