A massive peasant army led by a religious zealot is engaged in a Civil War with the Manchu Dynasty that will rage for fourteen years and lead to the death of tens of millions. This is history that most Western readers are only dimly aware of, but it had a world-changing impact. Here it forms a splendidly portrayed backdrop to the intrigues, machinations and fighters on both sides of the war and the foreigners trapped in the middle of it all. Epic in scale, this would make a great movie....more
