I had kind of written off this author a while back, but this read was free recently (amazon first read plus the audio came with it) and I was reading it for a specific video, sooo here we are! Since this was a super short read, I decided to just give it a try.
Britta is a beloved waitress at Sluggers, a popular bar and local hangout for the local hockey club, the Bridgeport Bandits. Her half-brother Bryce plays for the team as well. It’s New Year’s Eve and she finds out that Sumner, a defenseman for the team who is close to breaking into the NHL, has to return back to Canada since his work visa is ending. Her brother and the whole team have the bright idea for Britta and Sumner to marry for a green card instead!
Britta and Sumner decide to get married and fake the relationship for a year so he can get a green card and stay in the U.S. to attract the attention of the NHL. This story spends the year of their marriage together. He’s been into her for a year and has even fantasized about marrying her for a while, so it’s a dream come true for him. This moved quickly and was a typical Tessa Bailey kind of read. I just wasn’t sold by these characters and I feel like you can’t take the setup too seriously or question it too much. ...more

Lake is a popular celeb pop star and finds her boyfriend cheating on her after her concert with her tour manager. Hurt and with her heart set on revenge, she sets her sights on her ex’s dad, who happens to be the owner of the record label she sings for.
This one moves quickly and delivers on everything you’d expect from the storyline. It is full of allllll the Swift-isms (the synopsis and blurb alone, the chapter titles, the references and nods throughout the entire story). It was just a fun time! He tries to help keep her out of the public eye, occupies her until her best friend arrives, they share a New Year’s Eve kiss, hot tub times, he treats her better than anyone she has dated before, pays attention to her fav movie and drink orders. Pretty cute and very steamy!...more

So a sort of prequel if you will that takes us back to the 80s when the Eden parents get their second chance romance, before their 6 kids which the series has been following!
This story starts off on New Year’s Eve Eve, getting ready to ring in 1988! Anne Snow is home from college and ready for a weekend getaway to spend time with her two best friends from high school who she hasn’t seen much of in the past 3.5 years. Things are going great, that is until Harrison Eden shows up, her highschool ex she hasn’t seen in 6 years, and they’re forced to share a room/bed! Harrison is determined to find out why Anne broke up with him back in highschool, and maybe win her back…
“A better man would have bowed out of this trip when he’d learned his ex-girlfriend was coming along. A better man would have let her enjoy the weekend with her friends. Except I wasn’t a better man. And it had been too damn long.”
This was cute and short, like 50 pages or less, and it’s on KU now! It originally was printed in a winter anthology from multiple authors for the bookish box. Snowy cabin Montana vibes, a little second chance romance, and seeing the Eden parents before they decided on those 6 kids they’d later have!...more

Jane has always had a crush on her best friend Mike but chickened out last year on declaring her feelings because she didn’t want to lose her best friend. And then he ended up with someone else. Armed with a broken heart and a massive hangover, Jane wrote a list of New Year’s Resolutions intent on turning herself into “new and improved Jane” who doesn’t let her life pass her by. But now the year has flown by and there is just 2 weeks left for her resolutions to get checked off the list, when Mike spots the list he steps in to help. But of course all the extra time spent together is just reminding Jane of all the feels she has for him, but just maybe he’s interested too...
So this one had a strong start but then once they get together I was ready for the story to be over. But that was just the halfway point, I didn’t see the point of the rest of the story and it made the experience go downhill unfortunately for me. And after leading up to some really steamy times, it would cut away to the next day! Give me the steamy times. Also the Mike character was supposedly a Grammy winning musician which wasn’t brought up until half into the story and he’s over here dropping $1000 on ice cream sundaes. I don’t know, wasn’t a fan. ...more

Langston is a 35-year-old HR manager & newly single mom who has always dreaded her work’s NYE party. This year she decides to brave it and show up because her new co-worker (and friend) will be going too. They had first bonded at work being the only black people in an office of white co-workers, but soon realized they had more in common and this is such a believable friends-to-lovers novella. The hero Crew is a 43-year-old attorney & divorced dad of a teenage son. He definitely has some pining going on for Langston and when her ex shows up at the party he tries his best to make her feel more comfortable. Crew immediately lets Langston know all his feelings towards her and whew does this one get hot and steamy. ...more

Their lives began together, born at the same hospital on New Year’s Day just 1-minute-apart, but since Quinn was born first his family won the prize money of the first London baby born in 1990. So he started off life with all the luck, the money, and the name Minnie was supposed to have. But now 30 years later, Minnie & Quinn are about to meet again and maybe there is something there with how often their paths cross.
Minnie is at a New Year’s Eve party and gets accidentally locked in a bathroom the entire night. Her savior the next day, on their shared 30th birthday, just so happens to be Quinn. Minnie’s life is a bit in shambles at the moment; her rent and utility money is late, her pie-making business is chaotic & going under, and she might just have to move back home with her parents. Quinn on the other hand seems to have it all, but soon Minnie starts to see there is more to his seemingly picture-perfect life.
This was a cute tale of fate and I enjoyed all the flashbacks of each POV’s past, the fact that their shared birthday of New Year’s Day played into the story so much was really fun! All the flashbacks really helped pull together the “fate” idea with all the missed connections throughout the years between Quinn & Minnie. There is a lot more to this story than just the romance (which is honestly very light with no steam), both had issues to work through on their own (therapy is involved and I like seeing mental health explored in contemporary stories). There is also complicated relationships with their parents, Minnie with her mom (pushing her ideas of bad luck on Minnie, not being supportive of her adult plans, etc) and Quinn with his mom (who’s agoraphobic and has severe anxiety & panic attacks which has lead him to not want people in his life who are needy/dependent on him). I liked seeing all of these relationships being worked on throughout the book and the added in lighter-sweet romance was nice too....more
