Blood may be thicker than water, but not all families are meant to stay together.
Struggling to maintain her independence, and the life she has fought so hard to build, Max finally learns the truth about her own origins and her family.
Max has no time to absorb the shocking news. There are dead bodies missing from the mortuary, a demon on the loose somewhere in the city, and terrifying supernatural creatures on the loose that she and her fellow Marshals must contain somehow.
Max is used to working alone - can she put aside her past fears and work with her allies to keep the city safe?
Forged is the fourth book in The Grey Gates by Vanessa Nelson and continues the story which started in Outcast. If you like your fantasy mixed with a dose of mystery, a bit of magic, and a heroine who can hold her own, you will love this series. Get your copy of Forged now to continue Max's story.
I am a fantasy author living in Scotland, United Kingdom and spending my days juggling the demands of two spoiled cats, two giant dogs and my fictional characters.
As far as the cats are concerned, they should always come first. The older dog lets me know when he isn’t getting enough attention by chewing up the house. The younger dog’s favourite method of getting my attention is a gentle nudge with his head. At least, he would say it’s gentle.
This was a fun one, because we not only got some big questions answered with Max, but we also got a deepening to the mystery of this city and the larger world. I hope we get resolution on that. Like, who brainwashed everyone? And did this place just drop out of the larger world and, like, no one from the continent ever tried to go there and see what is going on? It's fascinating.
I liked that Max was better about standing up for herself, but she didn't go far enough. Look, her not doing anything to call out Kitris and Emmeline's self-serving bullshit doesn't make her a modest-type hero. It makes her an enabler. She's enabling frankly evil people to stay in power. Pretty much everything that has gone to shit can be laid at the feet of the Order not doing their goddamn jobs. They're pathetic and useless, and Max allows them to use her to prop themselves up by allowing them to claim THEY did the things she did. Kitris claiming he closed the Grey Gates himself when the truth is he sent an untrained and abused, indoctrinated child to do it...his most sacred responsibility as head of the Order. He sent her and 9 warriors there to die. And when she didn't die, he threw her out like trash. There is no excuse. For him to be so vehement about his belief that she lied about closing the gates ... is everyone fucking stupid? There were portents in the world that they were open and the dark lord was coming through from the underworld. Max was sent on her mission, came back, said she closed them but everyone else died. They said she lied ... but the portents stopped and the dark lord never showed up. What do these brain-dead fucking assholes think closed the gates? A stiff breeze? Anyone other than a goddamn moron knew she closed them, because 8 years have gone by since then and not a peep from the gates.
And then more recently, Kitris the Worthless claimed that he stopped the ritual at the docks, despite not even being there for the fight. And there were a lot of other people there - including Orshiasa (who I also think is a bag of utter shit) - so it isn't like it's a secret Kitris fucking lied about it, so why don't these stupid assholes put together that he's lied about ALL OF IT, ALWAYS.
I hope the author didn't want me to feel sad about Kitris killing himself. I don't. Not even a tiny speck of sad. As far as I'm concerned, the trash took itself out.
And I am not going to tolerate Max being sad about it. This is a man who has done nothing but abuse her. And I don't want to hear that she's sad she never found resolution with her "father" - she has known he was her sperm donor for like 2 days, so no. That's not going to fly.
I think the entire Order and priesthood is such worthless trash, across the board (all the magic users, I mean - the warriors are generally good people), that it makes me think less of the Lady, frankly. For a deity who is that able to interact with the manifest world, she has no excuses for allowing such corrupt garbage to be in control of her Order and priesthood. And yes, I'm including Orshiasa in that.
And speaking of him, I don't understand why Max talks to Orshiasa at all. If Kitris was a 99 on the 1-100 scale of assholes, Orshiasa is a 95. There's no excuse for how Orshiasa basically gaslit her into thinking she's stupid and worthless when he was her master. He's a short-sighted, hide-bound dipshit who has helped run the Order right into the toilet.
If the final book doesn't end with vast changes to the Order - including the warriors either being treated as equal members or all of them leaving - then I'm going to be deeply disappointed with this series.
And if Max doesn't get her shit together and stop letting corrupt assholes walk all over her as if she's some pathetic, humble martyr, I'm going to be really mad. I was absolutely not impressed with her weird defensive impulses towards Kitris - "he always tried to do the right thing" ... uh NO HE FUCKING DID NOT - and that shit needs to end. It's why this book lands at 4 stars.

3.5 I would suggest to fellow readers who like UF and fantasy to keep an eye on this author. They may need to grow and forge their own path, but there is no doubt in my mind that they have a knack for stories. The FMC has some characteristics in common with the UF heroines that are evident even if you don’t stop and think about it (but then we know all stories follow the same pattern see Propp). And this is a sign that as an author they may need to grow a little bit more. (The pattern will remain the same, it simply will be less clear.) But the world around and the story are definitely a fresh take in my eye.
I thought I’ll write the review in the next book, but I need to say something here.
Ms. Nelson books is hard to put down, once you start read it. However, probably not everyone cup a tea. This series reminds me of her Ageless Mystery, but it’s fine.
Also her books are not a fantasy or paranormal romance, there’s possibly male interest for our heroine but nothing happens between them so far. No romance whatsoever!
Despite of that, I still read her books because she is a fabulous storyteller.
Now, this is a trigger warning. Her heroine not a Kate Daniels, Eve Dallas or the usual strong and kick ass type of heroine you know.
Physically she’s strong but that’s about it! In fighting with others she’s got kick, punch, thrown, all of those and more, it’s horrific to read how’s she’s like a boxing punch bag all the time! And Miss Nelson writes her suffering in details 😱.
Yeah, made me shudder most of the time and skipped them and it’s happening often throughout the story. She have some magic in her but up till this book she doesn’t have a clue how to use it to help her in fighting and also, the magic not helping her much so far, oh well..
But the story is interesting , so yeah I still waiting for the last book in the series.
Still enjoying this series, and this installment picked up (ei: fewer slow parts) and kept me eagerly turning pages. It seems to be falling into a little bit of the same ‘ol, same ‘ol, though. Same demons (plus a couple), same problems, same resolutions, same frustrations, etc. etc.
The character growth is somewhat stalled, as well. Except for a small (but vital) revelation for Max, not much changed or deepened with her or in any of her relationships either. I’ve read and loved other series from this author so I know she writes very little romance into her books, but it is still nice to have some growth and progression in her character’s relationships.
And what is it with Max’s power? She has known she has it for a couple of books now, AND she knows it can completely incapacitate and/or kill. Yet, she never thinks to use it until the moment everyone is going to die?! And even then she only thinks to “hold” the baddies, not STOP the baddies?!? Drives me crazy every time.
Still, I want to see her save the world and, hopefully, get some credit for everything she has done in the past four books. It might be asking too much, but it would also be nice if we saw her and Bryce actually become something together, as well… yeah, I know, but I can dream. :)
Forged is the penultimate book of The Grey Gates series - the final book will arrive on Leap Day 2024. And as it is the second to last, more information is given to us. We found out who Max's family really is - and how she ended up with light magic (). We also discovered more about the town that Max, Bryce, and everyone lived in. AND there were casualties...
I found this to to be quite exciting - probably the most versus previous three. I loved knowing more about Max. I loved watching her working together with the warriors - even if she hadn't really reach full potential of her magic yet. Max did help though, her magic enabled the warriors and the Guardians to survive on multiple ocassions. And MORE demons were coming.
Coming back to add this "Upon Further Refection" note: why did the Grey gates open at all 8 years ago? Did creatures come out then? Why was Max called to close them and then nothing? The author tells us nothing.
4.25 stars, these stories move quickly and I find myself still intrigued by this world and its characters. Happy to see it concludes in book 5 though :)
I felt the surge of sweetness at the end of the story, we get an unexpected glimpse of Max letting her guard down with Bryce. Its still a very slow burn! No spice and I think the author missed the mark by not writing more glances between them, or touches. Sometimes its a little dry and I wonder what they have to connect them besides violence and killing :)
In this book, we find out the mystery to Max's past as well as the development of a possible community (of more killers). And Max has issues with crowds, Bryce is very understanding. A little too understanding, since he basically has to analyze her non stop since she doesn't USE HER WORDS MUCH.
They are still trying to kill the same demons from book 1.
Highlights & Spoilers: “The Guardian’s exact words were: Get out there and find those demons and don’t come back until you know where they are.” “That’s what he said,“ Khari said, with a grin, “but what he meant was that we should follow you around until you found the demons.” “Yeah,” Osvaldo agreed, smiling, “you’ve got a serious talent for finding trouble, Marshal.” Max laughed.
This was an excellent way to segue after some shocking news: “Tough break on the family,” Osvaldo said, breaking the silence. Max choked on an unexpected laugh. “Yeah, Kitris for an old man?” Joshua added, nose wrinkling. “That is tough,” Bryce agreed. He was standing nearby. “Family evenings would be mathematical quizzes.” Max groaned, trying not to laugh. It was too easy to imagine. Kitris had tested her often enough about the magical formulas she had failed to learn.
Some dialogue with Max and Bryce: "Max put on her boots and leather jacket, holstered her gun and left the house with her dogs, wondering what horrors she would have to face this day." -------- “I want to go home,” Max said, longing suddenly taking hold of her. She wanted her own space, her own furniture, the view from her kitchen looking out onto the Wild. She wanted to fall into her bed and sleep for a week and not dream. ------- “Your pick-up is out front,” Bryce told her. He seemed on the brink of saying something else. Max took a step forward and slid her arms around his waist, leaning against the solid bulk of muscle and warmth, feeling the last little bit of tension ease out of her body. His arms came around her so she was wrapped in him, completely at peace. “You could come with me,” she said, tilting her head up to look at him. Surprise lit his face, and he smiled, then the smile faded and he shook his head. (Damn that DUTY calling)
Question- why do they keep telling Max to go back to the Order? To what end? Just to be under Kitris' (and Samuel's thumbs?) That seemed odd that the Lady would want her there when something is clearly wrong with Kitris- and why didn't she help him too??
Also, first thing after Kitris kills himself, I would be scouring that body for sigils! With all the creatures coming back to life as well as a sigil might explain his strange behavior.
Max learns the truth of her parentage in the midst of hunting demons and monsters and whew it’s a doozy!!! While Max stands up for herself more in this book, she needs to go all the way, she also needs to figure out how to use her magic!! Overall it’s was a pretty good read.
I think this is a 3.5 - while I continue to enjoy the series, and it's never dull, the character development that could have followed some of the big revelations at the beginning sort of got squashed under a stampede of giant killer cockroaches and regenerating spider things, was drowned out by a hail of bullets, and was distracted further by some twisty conversations with super powerful demons who don't actually seem to be very good at killing our heroes or saying what they want. Many of the characters from earlier books are here in cameo but not in depth.
There was a sub theme about meeting families. Hers and Bryce's. Mostly just to tease us in the interlude between firefights...
I didn't make it a secret in my first review I don't expect much from this series. I do like the characters and world in general. I appreciate the MC not being over powered but this is getting ridiculous. She gets books to help her learn other ways to do magic, nothing comes of it. Her power does something useful, nothing learned. Her power comes when called. Does she practice with it? No! I thought I might read other books from this author between publication's dates of favorites, now I'm thinking not.
NOTE: this book depends on the story told in the preceding three books of the series. You need to go read them first, don’t worry, it’s worth it!
Max has no time to ruminate on all she and Bryce learned after their time in the vault, because demons are loose in the city, and causing all manner of mischief. To top it all off, Max learns some important truths about who she is, and what is expected of her…
This is a fast, and enthralling read, back in the unnamed city where Max, her shadow hounds and her friends all live. Not that Max gets to rest much, in fact she is constantly on the go in this book, as she races after the demons stirring up a great deal of trouble. Then there are the disturbing truths she has learned, which leave our heroine quite unsettled. Fortunately Bryce, Cas, and Pol are all there to support her- and the shadow hounds definitely get star billing in this book! I can’t say much about the *very* intriguing things that are revealed, I don’t want to spoiler things, but it definitely reshapes things just a little.
Although the book didn’t have a cliffhanger (thank goodness), we did leave it on an unfinished note, and it looks like we’re gearing up for a big showdown. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes, and what happens!
A truly engrossing read, this is one for the urban fantasy fans out there (just read the first three books before you start this one!)
Max is definitely coming in to her own. She is a good character. Loyal, persistent and caring. She is finally finding out who she is. The story line is action packed. Plenty of magic, murder and mayhem. Just my kind of book. I do wish that Max would practice her magic more. I think it would build up her confidence. She is capable of much but reaches for her physical weapons before her magic. As there is only one book left before the series end, I guess that will change. I love this series!
I was very pleasantly surprised by this series which kept me reading on book after book, especially since the whole premise and execution and world building of another one of this author’s series’s, the ageless series, grated on my last nerves. Unfortunately the final book’s release is moved to another month.
I am loving this series with each book getting better and more exciting as the story progresses. Fast paced and well written plot with interesting characters. I couldn't put it down while Max raced against the clock trying to locate the demons loose in the city before more people died. Highly recommend.
"This world is yours, not mine, and not His. You are its champion. You must defend your realm, daughter. Defeat His creatures. Use what I have given you.”
Things just continue to get more dicey for our h, Max, and her circle of friends trying to stop the demonic taint spreading out into her city.
In this one we have more creepy crawlies venturing over from the Wilds, as well as bodies that just don't want to seem to stay dead. With the demons from the last few books still trying to access the Arkus Codex- Max and the crew have to solve a series of deaths as well as try to figure out their enemies ultimate goal after leaving destruction in their wake.
We also get a major revelation from the Lady concerning Max's powers and background
Also we got to know more about the city itself- still not sure about the Wilds. But that the city
I've just finished reading the first 4 books in this series.
Now the wait for book 5 begins. I'm excited 😊
This series is not perfect. I need to say it. My eyes have done a rolled once or 20 times. I still recall in book one the same word used twice in the same sentence and I was like "no one saw this?" 🙃 It needs editing, it would benefit from taking more care in building some scenes and characters. Is like a sopita, all the ingredients are there but it needs time to cook. Dejen q esos sabores se junten, q las papitas se pongan blanditas, q ese caldo espese. Let it cook.
But...the potential is such!
Reminds me of a few big names in their early days. But Ilona Andrews is the name that comes to mind first. I started Kate Daniels more than a decade ago and I recall the "I see the potential of greatness here" and book by book the good not only got better, they became part of the reading piles of many readers, specially UF readers.
So yeah, I think I will stick around and watch this one.
Fast-paced plot, very little character development aside from the main character, who is inching forward toward some understanding. I esp like the world-building and character types.
As a lifetime reader, I’ve come to want more depth and length from books, especially fantasy. In the last 15-20 yrs, however, disappointment has been the order of the day. Books are practically pamphlets compared to novels like Melanie Rawn’s Dragon series or Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. Nelson’s series, like several Urban Fantasy offerings, have tremendous potential, with great plot lines, etc, but seem thin on depth. There’s a single main character developed, so it reads like a short story. Other characters who could have parallel story lines, like Orshiasa or Lord Kolbyr, interesting character potential, remain cardboard characters with brief, tantalizing descriptions.
Personal grousing aside, I like the series and plan to finish it out. I recommend it.
I was very happy to see Max growing into her new role. The revelations about her ancestry were surprising. There was plenty of action for Max and everyone else. A welcome addition to the series.
Max is finally starting to move beyond being merely a Marshall. As she travels about with a group of Warriors, I thought she was acting like a Guardian. Her magic is increasing. Max clearly longs for her life the way it was at the beginning of the series, but she knows now that is not her fate. She has her orders, from an authority she cannot refuse.
We will see whether she is ready for the final fight in book 5. We can also hope to find out why nobody remembers the rest of the world.
I love everything this author writes so much - to the point that I am spoilt for others when I am choosing what to read next. I actually savoured the fact that I had this sat on my kindle waiting for me for a few weeks before reading it! And I was not disappointed, a favourite in a favourite series by a favourite author, really need I say any more?
There were so many revelations and developments in this instalment, I loved seeing where Max is going and the machinations of those around her, both ally and foe. The world is such an exciting place and I can't wait to see what is in store for us in the grand finale coming up next. Not sure I will cope with the ending of this series! If you haven't read these yet you're in for a wonderful treat.
Well, I am still thoroughly enjoying this series and all the twists and turns, action-packed and very entertaining story. The characters are truly wonderful. On the not so bright side, I do feel it is not reaching its full potential. The “bad guys” always seem to get away and some parts feel very repetitive. Also, as I mentioned before, Max, the FMC should have shown more growth by book four. Don’t get me wrong, she has gained more confidence in her abilities, but not as much as she should, have, by this stage in the story. Additionally, there were a few too many typos for my liking. Overall, a very intriguing series, with plenty of suspense, action, amazing characters, magic and much more.
I don't review many books - and I don't rate them highly UNLESS I absolutely can't wait to get back to them to conclude the story. (I REALLY don't like the "word" "unputdownable" that is used these days.) I know, I know, tales are subjective, but I have read the first 4 books in the Grey Gates series over the last 4 days - with real life interfering as needed...and I have found myself hurrying to complete needed home tasks quickly in order to get back to these novels. If you love alternate worlds, complex characters, fantasy, mystery, action, adventure, monsters and heroes, read this series. When I finish #5 and the series today, I will be sad...but Vanessa Nelson has SEVERAL other series that I can try next!
I had hoped as the story progressed that the writing would too. It hasn't. A whole lot of nothing happened in this book. It's not until the end of it that the revelations from the previous book are even touched on. Max and Bryce speak slightly more in this book than they have in any of the others, and she's hugged him now but is still full of blushes and silence for the majority of their interactions. Things happen just to happen. The bad guys get away in a ridiculous manner. Max is left alive for no good reason after interacting with a supposedly powerful demon. All of the dialogue is stiff and jarring. I was hoping to finish this series out, but I just can't do it.
With this series it seems to be a slower read. But I think its the way the author wants it. Kinda gives the story a dated, simple read, which when you read the series you will understand the why of it. Sometimes there's too much repeating, like Max learning about parents, There's some great characters who you like hate or love. Some action, a bit of a story that only covers 1-2 days in her life so its a short read. And weird romance/wooing I can't believe moves so slow in a world so fraught w danger. It has a bit if everything so you should try it on free time, can't beat the price.
The end is coming. Lemme just say that this book starts out with a bang. No a complete eruption. Like volcano. Like I’m completely shocked. I was not expecting Max’s parents to be the parents. And now some secrets are out in the open, I have a feeling everything is changing so fast. Favorite part- we get a little glimpse of Bryce’s family. Oh man I hope I get to see more of them with Max. And the death count got real. Max lost someone in this one. It’s heartbreaking. I’ve truly come to love this series and I can’t wait to get my hands on the end and yet I don’t want it to end.
Max is on the hunt for demons on the loose and to stop the monsters with her shadow hounds. She is slowly developing her light magic, becoming more confident in her ability to wield it. Her guilt over the deaths of the 9 warriors after closing the grey gates still haunts her, but she is working on letting people in, and her relationship with Bryce is progressing well despite being part of The Order. Revelations come to light that give Max some clarity as to why she was selected to go to the underworld, although it is not the closure she was expecting. More questions than answers arise from this secret being revealed.
Vanessa starts us off, as promised, with Max's origin story and it is a surprise. There is no real clue to the "real world" and how the confusion came to be, but our characters are not shying away from the idea in a panic. The book is tied in to battles all the time with demons being behind so many issues. I would have liked more awareness or progress but battles filled the book with our storyline surviving amongst magical creatures and people. Want book 5 to tie some issues up.
I have read the first 4 books and am eagerly waiting for the last one. It is helpful to read from the first one since the characters grow and develop along the way. The first one starts off slow but then each one picks up the pace as the plot unravels. There are fights scenes but if that is a problem for anyone you can skip over them. A slow building romance that I found very believable. The world building was frustrating at times but more enjoyable as the books progressed.
Max is back kicking butt! This fourth book is filled with action, bad guys, magic, and scary creatures--just what I like. It's a huge improvement over the third book, which I wasn't a fan of.
We also get more developments about Max's background, and she grows more confident in her magical abilities. The family drama was really interesting, and it was nice to finally get some answers about Max.
