“You’re just going to spend the whole day with me?” she asked.
“If you’ll let me,” I admitted.
“We’ll have to see if I get any better offers from random men.” She beamed up at me, her green eyes sparkling in the bright sun.
I knew she was kidding, but something fierce and protective welled up in my chest and I had to fight the urge to pull her close to me again, as if in warning that no one else would be getting near her.
What was it about this girl that had gotten under my skin so quickly? Yeah, she was cute, but working in Hollywood I was surrounded by beautiful women. I’d never been interested in anyone like this. In fact, out there, I avoided women to the point that the press had begun speculating if I was dating any of my male co-stars.
Everything seemed so superficial in California. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a forever relationship, but I also didn’t want every dinner to be a publicity stunt.
I loved my job, but everything that came with it kind of sucked.
“Uh-oh,” Bonnie said, squeezing my hand. “There you go thinking again.”
“My apologies.” I chuckled as I smiled down at her. “No more thinking.”
“That’s the spirit.” She tugged my arm, leading me toward the games pavilion. “Come on, I want to play.”
Well, that worked out, because so did I. That was what today was supposed to be all about. Playing, having fun, pretending to have a normal life.
People were still staring at us, doing double takes as they probably realized who I was, but so far no one had approached. I hoped it stayed that way.
The longer I could be just a regular guy with Bonnie, the better my chances of maybe snagging a second date with her.
Not that this was a date.
Though, someday when I told our kids about how we met, I’d probably tell them it was.

Judging Ginger - Exclusive Excerpt
Judging Ginger
Free in Kindle Unlimited - Judging Ginger by Dakota Rebel
I was itching to get started, knowing that the fats had a tendency to burn so I was going to have to make a double batch up front. That s*** was time consuming and these competitions had time limits, so I just wanted to get going. But first they had to bring out the judges.
And my entire world swam so hard and so fast, I almost fainted on camera.
Paul f****** Goldman was standing ten feet away from me. And he looked even better in person than he did on television. My heart clenched and it took every inch of self-control that I possessed not to run at him and launch myself Dirty Dancing style into his arms.
It may have been a joke at home but standing there staring at him live and in person…I fell completely in love with him. I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that I would never love any man the way I loved Paul Goldman. And now, I had to bake the best damn cookies he’d ever tasted, so that maybe when this competition was over, he’d at least remember my name.
“Ready, set, bake!” the host called out, clapping his hands and breaking through the fog in my head.
I raced to the pantry, grabbing everything I needed, though I wasn’t worried that someone else would take it. It was a secret family recipe, and I’d never heard of anyone else using the same combination.
Forcing myself to focus, I got to work, cracking eggs and creaming fats together, finally going in with my hands to gently work the dough together and make sure it wasn’t over mixed.
“How’s it going?” Paul asked from over my shoulder, making me jump.
“Great,” I said, forcing a smile like the producer had told me to. And I was great, except for the fact that I was afraid I was going to vomit on Paul Goldman’s shoes.
I know we talked for a minute, but I have no recollection of the conversation at all. Then he was gone and I had to blink back tears as I dropped rounded tablespoons of cookies onto their tray and put them into the oven.
What the hell was wrong with me? I couldn’t for real fall in love with a celebrity crush. Who the hell does that? And why was I crying? The cookies were going to be perfect and I was about to wipe the floor with that Harry dude. I should be ecstatic.
I wrapped the rest of my dough in plastic and put it in the fridge, just in case I needed it later. Then I sat on the floor in front of my oven and watched the cookies, forcing myself to keep my attention on the bake, and not let it wander to thoughts of sexy pastry chefs.
I had a competition to win, damnit.
When the cookies were shiny only on the very tops, I pulled them out of the oven and left them on the tray for a minute, then transferred them to cooling racks. I grabbed the thirteenth cookie and took a bite, thrilled that it was absolutely perfect.
“Eating your entry, Ginger?” Anthony asked with a laugh, as he walked up to me with a camera man.
“That’s why you make a baker’s dozen,” I told him, hoping my smile looked genuine and not like a grimace. “So, the baker can try one before serving.”
Everyone laughed and he wandered away. I felt my smile drop instantly as I rolled my eyes and I could have sworn I heard Paul chuckle.
Looking up I met his gaze and he smiled at me. I gave him a real smile then turned back to get my cookies plated.
When time was called, we each took our cookies up to be judged. I was at the end of the line, so I listened to all of the comments the judges made on their way down. They were pretty favorable, and I started to doubt my choice. Two people had made macaroons, for fuck’s sake. And I was about to hand them chocolate chip cookies.
Oh well, maybe I’d get to go home before I made an ass out of myself in front of Paul.
“Ginger Hamilton, I’ve been waiting for this all morning,” Paul said as he stepped in front of me. “A signature chocolate chip cookie.”
He sounded doubtful, and it made my stomach lurch. I knew my cookies were good, but at the end of the day, were they good enough?
Paul and Catherine each took one. I watched, my gaze locked on Paul’s as he took a bite. His eyes narrowed, then he looked down at the cookie in his hand as if he’d never seen one before.
“What is that?” he asked, his tongue running over his lower lip.
“Duck fat,” I offered, unsure what his response was going to be.
“This,” Catherine said, also staring at the cookie in her hand. “Is the best damn thing I’ve ever tasted.”
“Who the hell taught you to put duck fat in a chocolate chip cookie?” Paul asked, his mouth full of another bite.
“My mom,” I told him with a shrug.
“Well, Catherine’s right. It’s damn good.” Paul shook his head. “Unbelievable.” He reached out and took two more cookies from the plate.
“Bakers, return to your stations. Paul and Catherine will be back to announce the winner of the cookie challenge and decide who’s going home.”
I walked back to my kitchen, pretty confident that I wouldn’t be sent home this round. I had to imagine that the judges going in for seconds was probably a good sign.

Convincing the WolfAvailable now at Amazon
Betsy Evans graduated college with dreams of a corporate job during the day and boxed wine at night. A simple girl with even simpler plans for her life. But after being attacked in the parking lot of a bar, her whole world is turned upside down. Much to her dismay, she discovers that she is actually an Aries, a supernatural power-up for werewolves. And the attack was not to be the last as wolves begin to track her down, wanting to make her theirs.
In an effort to find a suitable mate, her best friend’s brother Nixon accompanies her on a cross-country road trip to find a pack with wolves worthy of her powers, and maybe even her love. But it becomes clear to Betsy that she needn’t look any further than the wolf sitting next to her in the truck. The hard part will be convincing Nixon that he’s the wolf for her, before someone else lays claim to her first.
