This has got to be the weirdest computer game ever invented.

Swipe right for abduction

I touch the screen with a finger, pressing lightly to steady it. My hands are bony with veins standing out. They look like they belong to a much older woman.

What the hell. I’m stuck in this hospital bed, dying of Stage IV cancer. My e-reader wants me to swipe right to play a stupid game?
I got nothing to lose.

I place a trembling finger on the screen. The e-reader gives an encouraging chirp as I slowly slide my finger to the right. The screen starts to glow.

Is something happening to my eyes now? The doctors didn’t say anything about my eyes possibly being affected, but I’m not sure that means anything. They don’t tell me a lot of things these days if they don’t think I need to know.

I can’t tear my eyes away to find the call button for the nurse though… it’s like the screen is fracturing into into rainbows, filling my vision… and it’s beautiful. Then I feel it… something tugging at me, pulling at my body.

Am I finally dying? Is this the light that I’m supposed to go toward?

I open my mouth to call for help - I’m not ready! - but there’s no air and suddenly it feels like there are tight bands around my chest, pulling me towards the light. Tears slide down my cheeks in despair. Somehow, throughout my entire illness, my grief never made it to “acceptance” but now I have no choice.

Rings of light burst ahead of me as the darkness closes in. Pain, which thankfully feels distant because of the morphine, swirls as I shatter apart.

All right, lovelies, Queen of the Underworld is out and Cora is officially a badass.



I love this cover and how Cora changed from a victim to the author of her destiny.

When I first started writing the book in my lonely college dorm, I was obsessed with the scene where she meets Marcus. Cora was lovely, young, naive and very inexperienced--just like me. It took me over a decade to get the novels to where they are now, mainly because I had some growing up to do.

I used to hypothesize that most debut authors write themselves into their protagonists. I don't think that anymore, but my characters all have pieces of me. Mostly my flaws. And my snark--but Cora doesn't have much snark. I saved the snark for Olivia.

Cora does have all the wide-eyed innocence of a sheltered homeschooled girl who's leaving her youth and coming into her own. In 2006, I had that too, plus the knowledge that I needed to change to survive and thrive. Back then, it was tempting to dream of a dark and tortured billionaire who would save me. But a true heroine must save herself.

Fury lit up her eyes but his head was already descending, taking that lush mouth. Taming it.

Or at least he tried. She bit his lip and yanked her arms down from where he held them above her head and started pummeling him with them. Well, as much as a kitten can pummel a lion.

He easily caught her wrists again and pinned them above her head. She screamed out a roar of such fury and frustration, the Shades outside would surely hear and wonder what the hell was going on in here.

But Marcus didn’t care if they heard. He didn’t care about anything except the furious, bright, and shining goddess in his arms.

Her Dueling Daddies is out (on it's own, it was part of a boxset a while back in a shorter form). I want overboard getting into Evie's head and insecurities--probably because she is me in a lot of ways! A curvy, wannabe sex goddess who dreads department store dressing rooms and bathing suit shopping. And we compensate for our rampant insecurities by being funny and cute. :D

I grab my phone again. I’m going to craft the most perfect text. Sawyer will be in awe. He will fall in love, propose marriage, and we’ll have twin blond babies before my cousin’s second anniversary.

At the very least, he’ll text me back.

After ten minutes, I’ve got it.

"What are you wearing?" I text to Sawyer. I go back and forth on emoji choices, finally settling for a winky face. I’m coy, I’m cute. I’m fucking hilarious.

Oh who am I kidding? I’m pathetic. I’m going to be regulated to my cousin’s personal assistant and dog watching duties for the rest of my life. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride--except I’m never bridesmaid, either. Bridesmaid would be a step up.

I slump over my desk.

My phone vibrates and I pop up like the demon possessed girl in the Exorcist. I cringe when I see my What are you wearing? text. I could’ve done better.

Sawyer: "That’s usually my line. Wink emoji."

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I spin around in my chair. Ben walks by, frowning at me. It’s almost three pm and I haven’t gotten to my own client case files. I don’t even care. I have left Earth and am sitting on cloud nine. Two hot guys, one day.
You’re perfect for our competition. Bear growling on the phone. Sawyer’s smooth tenor. You’re perfect for our competition. Take that, Auntie Jen! I’m not too fat to attract male attention. You’re perfect.
3:29 pm, my phone rings. Sawyer. I mime screaming before putting the phone to my ear. Deep breath, Evie. Be cool. Answer the phone.

“Hey.” My voice is a breathy melody. Alto meets Marilyn Monroe. I hope. It’s also possible I sound asthmatic.

“Hey girl.” Sawyer could give Ryan Gosling sexy lessons. If he could bottle his voice into cologne and sell it, the scent would get a girl pregnant at twenty paces.

“Did he tell you?” There’s a smile in Sawyer’s voice. I clutch the phone tighter. The competition. Bear. Sawyer. Me.

“Yeah,” I let out a shaky breath. “Is he for real?”
“Oh yeah,” Sawyer laughs. “He’s always for real. Truth is, we’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time. Just needed the right opportunity.”

“And that’s me?”

“That’s right.”

“Huh,” I say, and he laughs.

“Come on. It’ll be fun. You can’t say you don’t want to.”

“Oh I want to…” I trail off, imagining these two guys towering over me, taking my hand and leading me into a bedroom. Unreal, and yet my body sings to life. “I just don’t know if it will be...wise.”

“We’ll make it worth your while.” His voice vibrates through me.

“Do you do this a lot?”

“Nope. Like I said, we’ve been waiting for the right one to come along.”

I weigh his words. The right one sounds nice, but maybe they were waiting for someone pathetic and desperate enough to say yes to something crazy. That would explain why they picked me.

“I don’t even know you guys.”

“Get to know us,” he coaxes. He has an answer for everything. “We can spend time together...not fucking.”

“I don’t date,” I say automatically. Somehow this line has become my shield.

“We know,” he soothes. “You’ve made that clear. Think of this as...exploring. For mutual benefit. C’mon, Evie,” he adds when I hesitate. “Live a little.”

“A little? What about living large?” As soon as I say it, I curse myself. I’m already large. Don’t remind him.

“Sounds good to me. If you’re with us you better get used to large.”

“Oh my,” I warble, not even trying to be funny. Sawyer laughs.

“You are too cute.”

Cute! I’m cute! “So I’ve heard.” I twirl my hair on my finger, channeling suave and sophisticated.

My finger snags on a knot. I tug but it’s stuck.
“What you doing tonight?”

“Brushing my hair.” I yank my finger out and a chuck of my scalp comes with it. I bite back a yelp.

Sawyer chuckles. “Not washing it?”

“Oh you know, I gotta save something for weekends.” I rub my stinging scalp. “My life is so glamorous.”

“Well, if you get your hair done early, come on by the bar. I’ll be working seven to two.”

“Uh, okay. I’ll see what I can do. I got a lot of hair.” I got a lot of hair? I pull the phone away and make a face. What the hell is wrong with me?

“You do that. Oh and Evie,” his voice drops an octave. “I’m not wearing anything.”

Her Dueling Daddies

I’ve always loved Greek and Roman mythology. ‘Innocence’ is a retelling of the myth of Persephone and Hades. ‘Awakening’ goes further, using the story of Orpheus and Euridice as a subplot, and introducing more of the re-imagined Pantheon. I held nothing sacred and pulled from Ovid, Hesiod, Shakespeare, Homer, and even the Bible (‘cause why not?). Some of the references are super oblique, but if you’re a nerd about this stuff like me, you’ll appreciate this abbreviated cheat sheet (the full one will be in the back of Awakening):

The Underworld:

Cora Vestian: Persephone, Proserpina. First name comes from Kore. Last name inspired by the Vestal Virgins.

Marcus Ubeli: Hades. Last name inspired by the chthonic god Eubuleus.

Sharo: Charon. Nicknamed The Undertaker.

The Shades: Marcus’ criminal army.

The Styx: a crime ridden area of New Olympus

Brutus: Cerberus.

The Chariot: Marcus’ private club where he conducts most of his business. Contains the office where he and Cora met.

Other characters in New Olympus:

Armand: Hermes. He has wing tattoos and owns a business called Metamorphoses, a reference to Ovid.

Maeve: Hectate, goddess of the Crossroads. She advises Cora.

Zeke Sturm: Zeus. The esteemed mayor of new Olympus. Last name (Storm) inspired by the lightning bolts Zeus used.
