Mathematical Thinking for Primary

About this ebook
Mathematical thinking, much like language, begins to develop early in life. Yet, while we celebrate the exceptional talents of mathematical prodigies like Ruth Lawrence or McLaren, we often fail to nurture these skills at the primary level, where they can have the greatest impact. This book aims to fill that gap. Designed for young learners, it focuses on building mathematical reasoning with minimal prerequisites—just basic addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication. Not only does it help consolidate these foundational skills, but it also introduces problem-solving strategies that will prove invaluable, especially for students preparing for the 11+ exams. With the UK's GCSE math pass rate at just 40%, the need for a more innovative approach is clear. Give your child the advantage they deserve by introducing them to this unique and practical resource.

PREFACE
Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe
said the great Italian astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei. Certainly, like the acquisition of language, it develops very early. not only in mathematical geniuses like Gauss or Rao, but also in many young prodigies like Ruth Lawrence. They can think mathematically from an early age; others require guidance.
The dismal 40% pass rate in GCSE mathematics exposes the lack of mathematical thinking ability. The focus of mathematical teachers has been on content; hence, the students are not to blame. In fact, students only meet real mathematical logic at college.
The goal of this book is to remedy this deficiency at the primary level, where it will have the maximum impact. Twenty-five tasks are presented that require only the very basic skills, mostly of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They illustrate key mathematical concepts and techniques that teachers will developed and refine in secondary school and college. By teaching your young child these skills, you will give him/her the ability to master mathematics successfully later in their career.
The method is as follows:
1. Preliminary knowledge needed.
2. The problem is presented with simple examples before the student tries it.
3. The solution is given (with extension for abler students).
4. The key mathematical skill/concept developed, and examples of its link to higher mathematics problems is presented.
You do not need to understand point 4 to use this book.
