In 1900, the German Empire was extremely shaken by a violent crime. To the east of the country , in the province of West Prussia in the town of Chojnice (Ger. Konitz), a junior high school student, Ernst Winter, was murdered. The circumstances of the case and the manner of the crime led the local population to believe that the boy had been killed by the Jews in order to win his blood for ritual purposes. The accusation of the local Jewish population resulted in a rapid increase in the hostility of Christians (Germans and Poles) towards their Semitic neighbours. The lie about the guilt of the Jews quickly went through the entire province, and then reached the furthest corners of Germany. In Chojnice, riots and numerous attacks on Jews and their property took place. Anti-Jewish excesses have spread rapidly in West Prussia. The course of the investigation and its relationship with the anti-Jewish riots was described by the main representative of the Polish press in West Prussia – Gazeta Toruńska. Było tak do czasu zmonopolizowania rynku medialnego przez telewizję w XX wie-ku. Za pośrednictwem gazet propagowano różne idee społeczne i polityczne, w tym antysemityzm, który wzmógł się w Niemczech po 1871 roku. Rynek prasowy w zjed-noczonej Rzeszy był jednym z najlepiej zorganizowanych w Europie – obok Anglii i Francji. Z każdą dekadą poprawiała się jakość i szybkość dziennikarstwa na szczeb-lach lokalnych, gdzie prowadzono dyskusje o palących kwestiach, opisywano afery kryminalne lub nawoływano do głosowania do sejmiku itp.

Obducenci uznali, że została ona zamordowana, i że post mortem wycięto macicę z płodem: Franka była w piątym miesiącu ciąży. Podejrzenie padło na żydowską rodzinę Ritterów, z którą denatka utrzymywała przyjacielskie stosunki. Ostateczni obciążył swymi zeznaniami Ritterów sąsiad Marceli Stochliński, który zeznał, że współuczestniczył w mordzie Franki. Zarówno Ritterów, małżeństwo i dwie córki, jak i Stochlińskiego zaaresztowano. Sprawę Ritterów była już wielokrotnie opracowywana: najszerzej Jola Żyndul, Maria Cieśla i Tim Buchen. Zastanawiające było to, że sprawą zajmowali się albo badacze zajmujący się historią Żydów, albo historycy antysemityzmu. Mimo niezwykłej medialności i popularności nie znalazłam wzmianek o sprawie, ani w historiach Galicji, ani Krakowa, ani historiach systemu sprawiedliwości. W dzisiejszym wykładzie będę się zastanawiać, 1) dlaczego sprawa była i jest w tych pracach historycznych przemilczana (tendencje historiograficzne). Ponadto chciałabym zastanowić się, 2) jaką rolę odgrywał proces dla miast, w których się odbywał. Folia Medialność sprawy Kontekst sprawy dość szczególny, bo szerzył się w najlepsze antysemityzm, niedługo przedtem oskarżono na Węgrzech Żyda o popełnienie mordu rytualnego. Sprawa Eszter Solymosi stała się bardzo popularna i wsławiła Tiszaeszlár , o której to miejscowości nikt wcześniej nie słyszał. Doprowadziło to do procesu głównego rzeczoznawcy i popularyzatora mordów Augusta Rohlinga, który został mu wytoczony przez Józefa Samuela Blocha. W Dreźnie odbył się pierwszy kongres antysemitów. Antysemityzm zdobywał na znaczeniu, a mord rytualny stał się tematem aktualnym i polaryzującym, bowiem ułatwiał konsolidację i mobilizację stronnictw politycznych. Procesy o mordy rytualne miały wobec tego znaczenie w powstaniu antysemityzmu, jako prądu politycznego, i dla powstania prądu przeciwnego, który eksponował walkę z antysemityzmem jako najważniejszy element żydowskiej tożsamości.

The Jewish origin of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, one of the greatest modern Polish writers, has remained a taboo in Poland for years. The Jewish thread was never significantly
thematised in his work. The strength of dismissal of this matter from his consciousness as a writer—together with the panic caused within the Polish literary milieu by the confirmation of rumours about his “foreign origin”—speaks for itself and indirectly illustrates the attitude to otherness that still prevails in mainstream Polish literature. In this article, I would like to explore the author’s literary/biographical strategy, which is outlined in two stories set in the Late Middle Ages. Both of them are based on the so-called blood libel in its early variant, which consisted of accusing Jews of desecrating the host.

This study aims to show the eminent role of the imagination and its
materialized forms in the creation of long lasting ‘knowledge’ of ‘Jewish ritual murder’.

The two examples examined here belong to the cultural history of the Tiszaeszlár blood libel (1882–1883), which has had a long-lasting effect in Hungary. Both case studies, albeit different regarding their genre and their primary audience, attest to the significance of cultural products in the creation, dissemination and survival of antisemitic prejudices.

Paintings depicting the imagined ritual murder were primarily intended for the politically active urban bourgeoisie, whereas the genre of folk songs appeared as a predominantly rural phenomenon; yet on many occasions both the actors involved and the cultural products created transcended social boundaries.

The songs and the images created a tangible materiality for the alleged ritual murder; this perceived reality was crucial for the embedding of the blood libel legend into the common consciousness and the creation of a ‘solid’ knowledge of it; this largely passive knowledge was activated decades later, in the case of the blood libel accusations, against survivors of the Holocaust.

This doctoral dissertation explores the oeuvre of János Major (1934–2008), an important member of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde and the so called Iparterv-generation, dedicating special attention to the analysis of the works created in the 1960s and the 1970s. The thematic focus of the dissertation – the result of both the oeuvre and the author’s choice – provides a prominent place within the graphic and the conceptual periods for the works dealing with Jewish identity, anti-Semitism, the Tiszaeszlár blood libel, and the Holocaust. These works constitute outstanding examples of the reception of the Holocaust and Jewish identity in Hungarian art.

This paper examines how ideas of “Jewish ritual murder” were created, transmitted and popularized. It draws on case studies from the cultural history of a Hungarian blood libel (Tiszaeszlár, 1882–83), examining two separate discourses. Firstly, the genesis, function and diffusion of anti-Semitic propaganda paintings in the last two decades of the 19th century and secondly, folk songs related to the blood libel, their characteristics and the role they played in post-WWII pogroms.

Already in 1882, a monumental propaganda painting was created in Zagreb, depicting the imagined murder scene. This image was popularized by photographs (sold locally and via mail order by the painter himself) as well as further graphic interpretations. Another monumental (2 x 4 meters large) painting related more loosely to the specific blood libel was created in the 1890s as part of an anti-Semitic business venture. This work was exhibited at multiple venues from Paris to St. Petersburg (usually in shopping arcades fashionable among the bourgeoisie), mostly with the alleged attribution to a famous Hungarian painter living in the French capital, Mihály Munkácsy. The painting was toured across Europe in order to capitalize on the international fame of the supposed creator as well as the scandalous topic, in accordance with the taste of political anti-Semitism emerging in this period.

On the other hand, from the time of the Tiszaeszlár case up until – at least – the 1970s, a substantial reception of the affair can be attested in folk songs, which showcase – rather than the original blood libel accusation – blood-drinking and cannibalism. Characteristic of these songs is the contamination of the blood libel myth with different, familiar elements (religious motifs as well as popular fables such as the Little Red Riding Hood), which helped substantially the embedding of the story. The social knowledge about “Jewish ritual murder” perpetuated in and transmitted through these songs offer an explanation for the emergence of blood libel accusations in Hungary against survivors of the Holocaust. Although this “knowledge” was not necessarily the major drive behind post-WWII anti-Jewish pogroms, it certainly guided and channelled the hostility along certain violent patterns.

The two case studies represent different facets of the cultural reception history of a specific blood libel. The paintings were intended for the bourgeoisie as part of an anti-Semitic business venture, while the folk songs developed in a rural setting. Although we are not aware of the imminent effect of the anti-Semitic imagery analysed above, the potential dangers and violent consequences of the diffusion and perpetuation of such “social knowledge” are exemplified by the role these folk songs played in post-WWII pogroms.

Our research expedition to the Hajnówka/Bielsk-Podlaski vicinity of the Podlasie area, north-east of Poland, between 2nd and 9th December 2007, marked the second stage of the Ethnographic Archive project headed “Systematic field research into Polish provinces: The memory of Jews and vitality of the blood libel in the Holocaust time and thereafter”. The project’s prospective objective is regionalisation of the memory of Polish Jews, encompassing local ideas and images of the group, their association with the blood libels thread and local images of the Shoah. The basic research method is ethnographic field interview that is meant to elaborate heuristic generalisations – local images as recorded during individual expeditions.

Miután Erdélyi József 1937-ben a nyilas Virradatban megjelentette hírhedt vérvádas versét, a Solymosi Eszter vérét,  a korszak neves újságírója, Bálint György a következőket írta: „…nem érdemes felindult hangon búcsúzni Erdélyitől, aki most »meghalt«. Dehogy halt meg! Karriert fog csinálni.”

Ennek a karriernek jelenti késői állomását egy szélsőjobboldali magyar rock együttes, az Egészséges Fejbőr kilencvenes években megjelent lemeze. Az ezen szereplő két dal közül az egyik témája a tiszaeszlári vérvád, szövege Erdélyi versének töredékeiből épül fel, míg a másik szám csak refrénjében utal Tiszaeszlárra, elsősorban egy újabban keletkezett cigányellenes toposzt tematizál. Utóbbi esetben egy szövegen belül kapcsolódik össze két, időben és térben is távoli esemény, jól példázva az antiszemitizmus és cigányellenesség hazai szélsőjobboldali szubkultúrákra jellemző összefonódását.

Előadásomban Erdélyi versét két irányból közelítem meg, elemzem egyfelől annak eredetét, inspirációs forrásait, másfelől késői reneszánszát. Egyrészt bemutatom azt a közeget – a vérváddal kapcsolatban keletkezett népdalokat és motívumvilágukat – amelyek Erdélyi versének hátországát jelentik. Másrészt a Solymosi Eszter vérének utóélete, az Egészséges Fejbőr működése kapcsán elemzem a vérvád, valamint a rendszerváltás utáni szélsőjobboldali szubkultúrák és gyűlöletcsoportok összefüggését, zene és politika viszonyát.
