Toarcian

2013.45 These maps (rectilinear projection) are from the PALEOMAP PaleoAtlas for ArcGIS (Scotese, 2013a-f).  This is a digital atlas of plate tectonic, paleogeographic, and paleoclimatic reconstructions designed for use with the GIS software, ArcMap (ESRI).  Table 1 lists the various types of maps that comprise the PALEOMAP PaleoAtlas.  The maps included in this folio are highlighted in bold text (Table 1).
The last map in each folio is a rectilinear graticule that can be overlain on the maps to provide a geographic reference frame.  A rectilinear projection was used because it can be easily georeferenced in ArcMap and transformed into a variety of other map projections.  The rectilinear, or plate caree map projection can also be directly “wrapped” onto a spherical projection, like the oneused by Google Earth. A set of Google Earth paleoglobes has made from the maps in this folio. These Google Earth paleoglobes can be downloaded at: www.globalgeology.com.

Table 2 lists all the time intervals that comprise the PALEOMAP PaleoAtlas for ArcGIS. The PaleoAtlas contains one map for every stage in the Phanerozoic, as well as 6 maps for the late Precambrian.  Eventually, Map Folios, like this one, will be published for every time interval in the PALEOMAP PaleoAtlas.  The following section is a brief description of the maps that makeup the Map Folio.

During the Pliensbachian–Toarcian interval of the Early Jurassic, there is a well-known second order marine extinction that is observable at the species and genus levels. Ammonite diversity data from successions throughout Europe and parts of the Arctic suggest that this extinction may have been multi-phased with di- versity declining over six separate intervals. The main-phase of decline begins at the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary and extends into the Lower Toarcian, to a level that is correlative with the Tenuicostatum/ Serpentinum Zone boundary. To date, only the main-phase of extinction has been demonstrated as being global in extent and affecting multiple taxonomic groups. This multi-phased extinction has been attributed to regional and global controlling mechanisms that are associated with the Volcanic Greenhouse Scenario which links the eruption of the Karoo–Ferrar large igneous province (LIP) to global warming and mass extinction.
We compare stratigraphic ranges of ammonite and foraminiferal species in Pliensbachian–Toarcian successions of western North America to the record in Europe and parts of the Arctic in order to test the geographic extent of the multiple phases of extinction. Our results show six intervals of species level decline that correlate with those recognized in Europe: 1) middle of the Lower Pliensbachian (middle Whiteavesi–middle Freboldi Zones), 2) middle of the Upper Pliensbachian (upper Kunae–lower Carlottense Zone), 3) Pliensbachian/Toarcian boundary into the Lower Toarcian (upper Carlottense–middle Kanense Zones), 4) Middle Toarcian (upper Planulata–lower Crassicosta Zones), 5) upper Middle–lower Upper Toarcian (middle Crassicosta–Hillebrandti Zones) and 6) Upper Toarcian (lower Yakounensis Zone).
Recognition of this multi-phased event in three separate ocean basins (paleo Pacific, paleo Arctic, and Tethys Oceans), in at least two taxonomic groups, greatly expands the known geographic extent of this multi-phased event and argues for a controlling mechanism that is global in its reach. In relation to the Volcanic Greenhouse Scenario, our study shows that four of the six pulses of extinction occur within the main-phase of Karoo magmatism. The decline in the Early Pliensbachian, previously thought to be separate from this event, occurs within error range of the onset of Karoo magmatism and the decline in the Late Toarcian coincides with the later stages of magmatism. These observations extend the known duration of this multi-phased extinction event to the Early Pliensbachian and support the Volcanic Greenhouse Scenario, specifically the eruption of the Karoo–Ferrar LIP, as a preeminent factor driving the multi-phased extinction of the Pliensbachian–Toarcian.

Planktic Foraminifera are an extremely abundant, important and successful group of marine protists. They are particularly useful in reconstructing past environments and for biostratigraphic dating. Despite their importance, the origin of the group is uncertain. Previous work has suggested that they evolved from a benthic ancestor during the Triassic or, perhaps, the Mid-Jurassic (?Bajocian), but a reason for their origination has remained unclear. Here, we present evidence from the Toarcian (early Jurassic) of NW Europe that the origin of the planktic Foraminifera may have been one of the results of the early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event. This event appears to have been associated with a massive dissociation of gas hydrates and other, perhaps related, water chemistry changes.

Several stratigraphic studies have proved that Early Toarcian carbonate platforms and basins suffered a sharp sedimentary and palaeoecologic evolution worlwide reflecting the onset of dramatic environmental perturbations in the atmosphere/ hydrosphere system. An upper Liassic slope carbonate succession cropping out in the Gran Sasso range (Abruzzi, central Italy) and pertaining to the transition between the Latium-Abruzzi carbonate platform and the Umbria-Marche basin has been studied in this light.

Oceanic anoxic events were time intervals in the Mesozoic characterized by widespread distribution of marine organic matter-rich sediments (black shales) and significant perturbations in the global carbon cycle. These perturbations are globally recorded in sediments as carbon isotope excursions irrespective of lithology and depositional environment. During the early Toarcian, black shales were deposited on the epi- and pericontinental shelves of Pangaea, and these sedimentary rocks are associated with a pronounced (ca. 7 ‰) negative (organic) carbon isotope excursion (CIE) which is thought to be the result of a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle. For this reason, the lower Toarcian is thought to represent an oceanic anoxic event (the T-OAE). If the T-OAE was indeed a global event, an isotopic expression of this event should be found beyond the epi- and pericontinental Pangaean localities. To address this issue, the carbon isotope composition of organic matter (δ13Corg of lower Toarcian organic matter-rich cherts from Japan, deposited in the open Panthalassa Ocean, was analysed. The results show the presence of a major (>6 ‰) negative excursion in δ13Corg that, based on radiolarian biostratigraphy, is a correlative of the lower Toarcian negative CIE known from Pangaean epi- and pericontinental strata. A smaller negative excursion in δ13Corg (ca. 2 ‰) is recognized lower in the studied succession. This excursion may, within the current biostratigraphic resolution, represent the excursion recorded in European epicontinental successions close to the Pliensbachian/Toarcian boundary. These results from the open ocean realm suggest, in conjunction with other previously published datasets, that these Early Jurassic carbon cycle perturbations affected the active global reservoirs of the exchangeable carbon cycle (deep marine, shallow marine, atmospheric).

"A biostratigraphic and systematic study based on belemnites collected along with ammonites was performed on four sections in the Subalpine Basin (SE France): Lac du Castillon and La Baume (Castellane area), Galabrun and Grand Lara (Gap area). The specimens, originating from hemi-pelagic marl-limestone alternations in the lower part of the ‘‘Calcaires a ` Zoophycos’’ Formation, are dated from Middle Aalenian (Murchisonae Zone) to Lower Bajocian (Humphriesianum Zone). Five belemnite taxa
(Megateuthis elliptica, Holcobelus munieri, H. trauthi, Pachybelemnopsis roettingensis, Hibolithes sp.) have been identified, and two more taxa are reported in an open nomenclature (Belemnitida incertae sedis sp. 1 and sp. 2). The biostratigraphic range of the belemnite fauna is established. The new findings contribute to a more detailed understanding of the paleobiogeography of holcobelid belemnites that flourished at the northern margin of the Tethys Ocean and formed a distinct sub-Mediterranean fauna. The association herein described is similar to the fauna of the Calabro-Peloritani Arc (Calabria, Italy), a further hint for the supposed paleogeographic position of the latter during the Middle Jurassic."

The Early Jurassic Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE) and concurrent negative carbon-isotope (δ13C) excursion have recently been attributed to either the release of methane (CH4) clathrates or thermogenic CH4 gas associated with the Karoo-Ferrar large igneous province (LIP) into coals and organic-rich shales. 12C-enriched thermogenic CH4 production associated with the Karoo-Ferrar would result in residual material being 12C-depleted nearer the intrusions. In this study, geochemical analyses (carbon isotopes, volatile matter (VM), vitrinite reflectance (Ro)) are reported for two coal transects associated with dykes intruding the No. 4L coal in the Highveld Coalfield, Karoo Basin, South Africa. VM decreases from over 35% to around 15% in one transect, and the second transect shows a less pronounced decrease (from ~ 25% to ~ 16%). Accompanying the decrease in VM content is an increase in Ro from background levels of around 0.7% to over 4% adjacent to the dyke; used as a palaeo-geothermometer, Ro values indicate background temperatures of ~100 °C increasing to N300 °C close to the contact. Despite changes in VM and Ro, there are no significant changes in δ13C, certainly not of the magnitude that would be expected associated with large-scale thermogenic CH4 generation. These and other Gondwanan coals have low vitrinite and liptinite contents (components more prone to CH4 generation), in part explaining the modest decreases in VM adjacent to the dykes. This, combined with the relatively narrow metamorphic aureole surrounding the intrusions and the likelihood that at least some of the volatiles generated by the intrusion were trapped as coalbed CH4 or condensed as pyrolytic carbon, suggests only limited CH4 release. In addition, based on original estimates of moisture contents in these coals and the depth at time of intrusion (1,000–2,000 m) the dykes would have lost most of their energy heating and evaporating water, thus having very little remaining energy to generate thermogenic CH4.

During the Early Toarcian there was a significant disruption in the short-term active carbon reservoir as revealed by carbon-isotope records, which show a broad positive shift that is interrupted by a large 5–7‰ negative excursion (δ13Corg). Carbon-isotope excursion co-occurs with the deposition of organic-rich shales in many areas. This perturbation in carbon isotopes is thought to be indicative of severe climate change and marine anoxia. The two leading hypotheses as to the cause of this event invoke either global or regional controls. Here we present carbon-isotope data from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada showing a significant perturbation within a temporally constrained Early Toarcian succession that was deposited in the northeastern paleo-Pacific Ocean. These data reinforce the concept that the short-term active carbon reservoir was affected globally, and assist with the correlation of ammonite zonal schemes between western North America and Europe. The δ13Corg data show a broad positive shift that is interrupted by a sharp and pronounced negative excursion of 7‰ (8.5‰ in δ13Cwood) in the Early Toarcian Kanense Zone. This negative excursion also coincides with increasing total organic carbon (TOC) from ~0.4% to ~1.2%. These data suggest that the Early Toarcian carbon-isotope perturbation was indeed global and imprinted itself on all active global reservoirs of the exchangeable carbon cycle (deep marine, shallow marine, atmospheric).

1] Profiles of Mo/total organic carbon (TOC) through the Lower Toarcian black shales of the Cleveland Basin, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and the Posidonia shale of Germany and Switzerland reveal water mass restriction during the interval from late tenuicostatum Zone times to early bifrons Zone times, times which include that of the putative Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event. The degree of restriction is revealed by crossplots of Mo and TOC concentrations for the Cleveland Basin, which define two linear arrays with regression slopes (ppm/%) of 0.5 and 17. The slope of 0.5 applies to sediment from the upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzones. This value, which is one tenth of that for modern sediments from the Black Sea (Mo/TOC regression slope 4.5), reveals that water mass restriction during this interval was around 10 times more severe than in the modern Black Sea; the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 4 and 40 ka. The Mo/TOC regression slope of 17 applies to the overlying falciferum and commune subzones: the value shows that restriction in this interval was less severe and that the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 10 and 130 years. The more restricted of the two intervals has been termed the Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event but is shown to be an event caused by basin restriction local to NW Europe. Crossplots of Re, Os, and Mo against TOC show similar trends of increasing element concentration with increase in TOC but with differing slopes. Together with modeling of 187 Os/ 188 Os and d 98 Mo, the element/TOC trends show that drawdown of Re, Os, and Mo was essentially complete during upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzone times (Mo/TOC regression slope of 0.5). Drawdown sensitized the restricted water mass to isotopic change forced by freshwater mixing so that continental inputs of Re, Os, and Mo, via a low-salinity surface layer, created isotopic excursions of up to 1.3% in d 98 Mo and up to 0.6% for 187 Os/ 188 Os. Restriction thereby compromises attempts to date Toarcian black shales, and possibly all black shales, using Re-Os chronology and introduces a confounding influence in the attempts to use d 98 Mo and initial 187 Os/ 188 Os for palaeo-oceanographic interpretation.

Variations in the seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve through time can be caused by fluctuations in the strontium flux or variations in the isotopic ratio from at least six different sources and sinks. Thus, 12 or more parameters control each single measurement although widely accepted assumptions allow this to be reduced to typically six unknowns. Interpreting the causes of time-variation in the seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve is therefore hampered by inherent non-uniqueness. However, this problem is under-constrained rather than unconstrained. As a result, whilst there are an infinite number of possible interpretations, these all come from a few families of very similar solutions. Using this insight, it is possible to find solutions having the smallest possible variations in source flux or source 87Sr/86Sr ratio. Thus, lower- bounds can be placed upon the source variations responsible for the observed fluctuations in the seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve. When applied to the evolution of the Early Jurassic 87Sr/86Sr seawater curve, this approach demonstrates that a short-lived Toarcian event is genuine since it is present in all models, regardless of the values chosen for the unknown source fluxes and unknown source isotope ratios. However, the variations in strontium flux or isotopic ratio necessary to explain the Toarcian event may be significantly smaller than would be predicted assuming modern values for the unknown parameters.

Magnasupplephlebia intercalaria n. sp., detected in the Upper Liassie of Dobbertin (G.D.R.) is figured, described and discussed. The diagnosis of Magnasupplephlebia ZESSIN, 1982 is given on the new interpretation of dragonfly wing venation by RIEK & KUKALOVA-PECK (1984).

The ontogeny of the ammonoid genus Dactylioceras is studied for the first time and the stages in the ontogenetic development of their ornament, shell shape, and suture are shown. The taxonomic significance of the characters and the range of intraspecific variations is analyzed.

ABSTRACT – Several brachiopods and bivalves coming from the Toarcian or next stages of Alós de Balaguer (Lérida Prov., NE. Spain) are studied. Specifically: Brachiopoda: Telothyris jauberti, Lobothyris punctata and Homoeorhynchia meridonalis batalleri. Bivalvia: Gryphaea cymbium, Pholadomya sp. and Pterocardia sp. The genus Pterocardia is cited in Spain for the first time.
