The German Masonic thought of the eighteenth century

Mozart and his connection with the Freemason have been the subject of a number of studies, most of which aiming at determining if and if so to which extent the Freemasonic milieu influenced Mozart's production. The main aim of this paper is to review critically a recent study on Mozart by two Italian musicologists claiming that Mozart was nothing but a pretty mediocre musician and composer who exploited the Freemasonic net for his own interests. A thesis in no way proved and largely based on very old anti-Masonic prejudicial ideas.

Artykuł stanowi prezentację dramatu pod tytułem ,,Le franc-maçon prisonnier'', którego francuskojęzyczna, wydana w roku 1777, wersja została napisana przez Hansa Heinricha Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffena (dłuższą, niemieckojęzyczną noszącą tytuł ,,Der Freymaurer im Gefängnis'' i sygnowaną imieniem Hansa Karla Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffena opublikowano rok później), w kontekście oświeceniowej idei tolerancji oraz działalności wolnomularskiej i literackiej obu braci (współautorów, bądź autora i tłumacza prezentowanego dzieła). Problematyka związana z utworem oraz działalnością literacką von Ecker und Eckhoffenów nie była dotychczas omawiana w publikacjach naukowych w języku polskim.
Dzieło stworzone przez Hansa Heinricha Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffena jest apologią mającego duże znaczenie w szerzeniu idei oświecenia wolnomularstwa i głoszonej przez nie filozofii. Niemiecki arystokrata i wolnomularz przedstawiając postać szlachetnego, uwięzionego masona poprzez jego postawę i słowa podważa wszelkie oskarżenia przeciwko przedstawicielom sztuki królewskiej, zabiera głos w wewnętrznym konflikcie między nimi, a jednocześnie nawiązując do bardzo popularnych w epoce ,,Inkasów'' Marmontela czyni ze swego utworu manifest oświeceniowej idei tolerancji.

This paper focuses on August von Kotzebue's play "Der Freimaurer" [The Freemason], as a piece within the prolific genre of comedies about freemasons which emerged in the 1740s, and a work which includes numerous worldview-related allusions. In this context, the author extensively discusses the life and the oeuvre of the playwright who thus far has not been devoted any thorough study in Polish, apart from relatively brief mentions in works on the period and writers he had inspired .
The work by von Kotzebue may be interpreted on many levels. On the one hand, it features an ideological layer (support for the Enlightenment idea of equality) and an apologetic one (defence of freemasonry, in which both the protagonist and the author were involved). On the other hand, there are the comedic and romantic themes (a story of how love is capable of overcoming human vices). At the same time, the piece includes numerous references to the legends about freemasons which were widespread in Europe, a fact also addressed in the paper.

This paper discusses the drama entitled “Le franc-maçon prisonnier”, whose French-language version written by Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen was published in 1777, (the longer German version, i.e. Der Freymaurer im Gefängnis, signed Hans Karl Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen followed a year later), in the context of the Enlightenment concept of tolerance, and the Freemasonic and literary activity of the brothers (co-authors, or the author and the translator of the work). The issues relating to the piece and the literary work of the von Ecker und Eckhoffens has not been previously addressed in any publications in Polish.
