Spanish Feminism

This article frames Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes within the context of Spanish neoliberalism as revealed by class distinction, urban spatial cleavages, and neoliberal feminism. Based primarily on a dual theoretical framework of neoliberal feminism and Mimi Schippers’ dichotimization of hegemonic and pariah femininities, with tangential theoretical references to bisexuality and urban policy in Madrid, I revisit Etxebarría’s relationship to feminism and interrogate her subscription to a neoliberalist world view. This conceptual basis provides a new prism for assessing Etxebarría’s feminist credentials, while also exploring her interrelated neoliberal conformity. My analysis is tripartite, consisting of an initial scrutiny of her textual encoding of a neoliberal feminism which produces a hegemonic femininity that creates stigmatized ‘pariah femininities’. In the second part of this article, I examine her representation of class and spatial striation in the urban milieu of Madrid. The final section deconstructs Etxebarría’s narrative representation of lesbianism and bisexuality. Criticism to date has tended to pivot exclusively around the figure of Beatriz, and by according critical primacy to the novel’s secondary female characters, such as Mónica, her mother Charo, Beatriz’s mother, Herminia and Cat, I aim to uncover this much-studied novel’s unexplored inferences concerning female subjectivity, urban space, and class in contemporary Spain.

RESUMEN: Este artículo analiza la representación de la violencia sexual masculina en cuatro relatos de la escritora vasca Eider Rodríguez: "Ojos de abeja", "Carne", "Calle de la Providencia" y "Puntos suspensivos", incluidos en sus libros Y poco después, ahora (2007) y Carne (2008), versiones traducidas de sus originales en euskara. Estas narraciones revelan la existencia ubicua de una cultura de la violación en la sociedad contemporánea, en la que se incentiva la agresividad sexual en los hombres y se justifican sus ataques sexuales contra las mujeres. El artículo investiga tres modalidades de violencia sexual: la violación y el acoso sexual del hombre contra la mujer, y la violencia sexual buscada por la mujer cuando ésta mantiene múltiples encuentros sexuales de carácter agresivo tras haber asumido el concepto patriarcal de la mujer como objeto sexual. En los relatos la violación aparece como un arma de venganza que el hombre utiliza para intentar dominar a la mujer, mientras que el acoso sexual revela la sexualidad depredadora del hombre. En ambos casos se aprecia cómo el violador y el acosador tergiversan la realidad o culpan a las víctimas para justificar sus acciones violentas. La narrativa de Rodríguez manifiesta cómo la violencia sexual persiste en una especie de círculo vicioso donde la cultura de la sexualidad masculina agresiva provoca el acoso y éste deriva en violación y en la interiorización por parte de la mujer de que debe supeditarse sexualmente a los hombres.

Abstract: This essay explores the complex feminist philosophy that comes to the fore in En torno a nosotras, an overlooked novel written by Margarita Nelken, one of early twentieth century Spain's most vocal and polemic feminists. The analysis juxtaposes the novel with Nelken's essays, La condición social de la mujer en España and La mujer ante las cortes constituyentes, in order to encourage a hybrid interpretation of first-wave feminist thought in Spain. Specifically, this essay concentrates on the incorporation of maternity and motherhood into modern female identities. It provides a thorough examination of the debate, defence and theorization of this traditional female role within a fictional novel by considering the implications of Platonic and Socratic dialogues. The resulting analysis argues for a re-evaluation of first-wave Spanish feminism that takes into account both liberal and conservative tendencies.

Περίληψη:

Με φόντο τη φεμινιστική άνοιξη αλλά και τη συλλογική επιθυμία για ρήξη με το καθεστώς του 78 και το φρανκικό παρελθόν, στο Ισπανικό Κράτος, οι δρόμοι, τα αγάλματα, οι διαδηλώσεις, οι λαϊκές και θρησκευτικές τελετουργίες, οι καρναβαλικές τελετουργίες και άλλες εορταστικές επιτελέσεις αλλάζουν ριζικά φανερώνοντας μια από-αποικιακή επιθυμία. Το καρναβαλικό στοιχείο, η σάτιρα και η εορταστική κουλτούρα προκαλούν τα όρια της πολιτικής και θρησκευτικής ορθότητας αλλά και των ανδροκρατούμενων τελετουργικών παραδόσεων. Τα «άγια» σύμβολα και οι «άγιοι» λόγοι γίνονται πεδία σύγκρουσης, διεκδίκησης και επιτέλεσης μιας αντι-ηγεμονίας, λαϊκής και φεμινιστικής. Το γυμνό θηλυκό σώμα με τα γεννητικά του όργανα γίνεται ο καμβάς, η σκηνή και το σύμβολο πάνω και μέσω του οποίου  υμνούνται τα αναπαραγωγικά δικαιώματα, η απελευθέρωση από το χρέος της κοινωνικής αναπαραγωγής και η σεξουαλική απόλαυση. Γιγάντιες ή μικρότερες κλειτορίδες γίνονται καρναβαλικές στολές, αφίσες και διακοσμητικά σύμβολα εργατικών και φεμινιστικών κινητοποιήσεων. Μια από τις κορυφαίες στιγμές αυτών των επιτελέσεων αποτελεί η  εμφάνιση του άγιου και ανυπότακτου μουνιού (coño insumiso) σε διαδηλώσεις στην Ανδαλουσία, που παίρνει τη μορφή μιας παρωδίας των θρησκευτικών περιφορών που λαμβάνουν χώρα την Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα στο Ισπανικό Κράτος. Το καρναβαλικό και φεμινιστικό ανατρεπτικό στοιχείο επιχειρεί να απελευθερώσει ακόμα και την «παρθένο Μαρία» από τα πατριαρχικά δεσμά με τις συμμετέχουσες να δηλώνουν ότι αν η Παναγία μπορούσε θα είχε κάνει έκτρωση.  Οι πρώτες ανεστραμένες περιφορές-περφόρμανς λαμβάνουν χώρα το 2013 και το 2014 σε εργατικές και φεμινιστικές κινητοποιήσεις και αποτελούν ανάμεσα στα άλλα διαμαρτυρία για τις προσπάθειες απαγόρευσης του δικαίωματος στην έκτρωση από την τότε η κυβέρνηση. Στην αντίπερα όχθη,  ακραίες θρησκευτικές ομάδες και αδερφότητες εξοργίζονται διεκδικώντας την τιμωρία των γυναικών που συμμετέχουν σε αυτές τις επιτελέσεις, κατηγορώντάς τις ως αιρετικές και βλάσφημες.  Καθώς οι συμμετέχουσες ως άλλες μάγισσες επί εφτά χρόνια οδηγούνται σε συνεχιζόμενες δίκες, ένα κύμα συμπαράστασης εξαπλώνεται σε όλη τη χώρα με τις περιφορές του coño insumiso και τις φεμινιστικές αδερφότητες που τις επιτελούν, να γίνονται όλο και περισσότερες. Στην ανακοίνωση παρουσιάζονται λόγοι και αντί-λογοι, μαρτυρίες των συμμετεχουσών ως «άλλες εκδοχές της αλήθειας» ενώ δίνεται έμφαση στη μορφή των ανυπότακτων τελετουργιών. Με πιο εμβληματική την υπόθεση του coño insumiso παρουσιάζεται ο λόγος της κλειτορίδας σε καρναβαλικά και θρησκευτικά περιβάλλοντα και αποκαλύπτονται οι πατριαρχικές και οι θρησκευτικές βιαιότητες. Αναδεικνύεται έτσι μια νέα φεμινιστική αγ(ρ)ιότητα.

In La rampa, while Burgos highlights the growing demographic of single, working women in Madrid, the most prominent female issue explored is the experience of becoming a mother. Drawing on Foucault and Kristeva, this paper demonstrates how Burgos demystifies the traditionally lyricized concept of motherhood (‘ángel del hogar’) through a detailed depiction of Madrid’s charitable maternity ward. In the process, La rampa fashions a modern counter-discourse to the patriarchal, anti-feminist rhetoric idealizing the mother role.

In this article, I explore the current situation of women in Spain, and I then proceed to examine the motifs of the mother-daughter relationship and childfreedom in Atlas de Geografía Humana. This novel constitutes a critique of the much vaunted notion of a progressive Spain that has rectified the gender inequalities of the Francoist era, as one of the highly educated and successful protagonists, Fran, unwittingly adopts her mother’s alignment with patriarchal norms. This novel elucidates the incompatibility of the private and public sphere in Spain, for it is only with the protagonist’s renewal of her commitment to the private sphere that she will save her marriage, despite its negative consequences for her career. Fran’s ambiguous decision to have a child sustains the view that a traditional mentality governs the Spanish private sphere, and that the demands of the public and private spheres are frequently irreconcilable.

Offers a sustained analysis of both high and low queer culture and its connections to cultural and political processes in Spain.

Gema Pérez-Sánchez argues that the process of political and cultural transition from dictatorship to democracy in Spain can be read allegorically as a shift from a dictatorship that followed a self-loathing “homosexual” model to a democracy that identified as a pluralized “queer” body. Focusing on the urban cultural phenomenon of la movida, she offers a sustained analysis of high queer culture, as represented by novels, along with an examination of low queer culture, as represented by comic books and films. Pérez-Sánchez shows that urban queer culture played a defining role in the cultural and political processes that helped to move Spain from a premodern, fascist military dictatorship to a late-capitalist, parliamentary democracy.

The book highlights the contributions of women writers Ana María Moix and Cristina Peri Rossi, as well as comic book artists Ana Juan, Victoria Martos, Ana Miralles, and Asun Balzola. Its attention to women’s cultural production functions as a counterpoint to its analysis of the works of such male writers as Juan Goytisolo and Eduardo Mendicutti, comic book artists Nazario, Rubén, and Luis Pérez Ortiz, and filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
