Rusticien de Pise

La 'Compilation arthurienne' di Rustichello da Pisa (1272-74) è un florilegio di materiali cavallereschi in antico-francese estratti in gran parte dal 'Tristan en prose'. Il saggio riprende in considerazione le questioni classificatorie relative alla tradizione manoscritta e all'assetto redazionale dell'opera di Rustichello. Alcuni sondaggi nella parte centrale della 'Compilation' – dove il testo è più aderente alla fonte – consentono di giudicare, con un sufficiente grado di certezza, dell'innovatività (e della deteriorità) di alcune varianti offerte dall'una o dall'altra famiglia della tradizione compilativa, permettendo di ridisegnare, almeno in parte, le conoscenze acquisite circa la storia del testo.
Procedendo poi in senso contrario (da Rustichello alla fonte) lo scrutinio delle varianti suggerisce l'opportunità di alcuni interventi sul testo critico del 'Tristan en prose', la cui edizione, fondata sul criterio del «manoscritto-base», è stata conclusa in anni recenti.

Rusticien de Pise's 'Arthurian Compilation' (about 1272-74) is an anthology of Old French chivalry materials mainly taken from 'Tristan en Prose'. The present essay goes back over the classification of the manuscripts, also dealing with the problem of the text's versions. A survey in the central part of Rusticien's 'Compilation' – where the text is closer to its source – allow us to be quite certain about the degree of innovation of the variant readings (as well as the scribal errors) of the compiling tradition, thus permitting us to partially reshape our knowledge about the text's transmission.
If we move in the opposite direction (from Rusticien to its source), the analysis of the variant readings also suggests the possibility of some corrections to the critical text of 'Tristan en prose', recently edited with the method of the «base-manuscript».

The manuscript BnF fr. 1116 (F) is the best surviving witness of the Devisement dou monde both for the quality of its reading and because it offers the closest version to the original form of the text. The book was written by Marco Polo, who had travelled for 24 years in Asia in the last quarter of the thirteenth century, and Rustichello da Pisa, an Arthurian romance writer, while both were prisoners in Genoa in 1298. The language in which the work was first written – an Old French heavily sprinkled with morphological as well as lexical Italianisms – is considered as a representative example of «Franco-Italian». The great heterogeneity of the texts usually included within this category, however, might provide an incorrect impression as regards both the original linguistic form of the Devisement and the audience to whom it was originally addressed. The language of the ms. BnF fr. 1116 does not display strong similarities to the hybrid language used in Northern Italy for chivalric literature, which is traditionally called «Franco-Italian» or «Franco-Venetan». Some linguistic correspondences enable us to connect the ms. BnF fr. 1116  with the group of Old French manuscripts copied by Pisan scribes while incarcerated in Genoa prison, following the battle of Meloria (1284). The fragment of the Devisement recently discovered by C. Concina appears to be very similar to F. Both graphic and phonetic evidences suggest that this witness, too, has to be localised to Tuscany.

Nel sistema di produzione e fruizione dei testi, la compilazione è nel Medioevo tra i modi che riscuotono maggiore successo non solo tra storiografi e enciclopedisti ma anche tra i narratori. Il contributo prende in esame le procedure di costruzione della prosa compilativa a partire dal caso specifico della Compilation arthurienne di Rustichello da Pisa. Dopo una ricognizione interpretativa sui contesti in cui Rustichello impiega il termine compiler, ci si sofferma su vari aspetti del “mestiere del compilatore”: la selezione dei materiali, il loro riposizionamento, gli adeguamenti discorsivi dal co-testo di origine a quello di arrivo.

Various scholars have supposed that Marco Polo dictated his travel memories to Rustichello da Pisa on the basis of the details supplied in the Devisement dou monde’s prologue. According to another hypothesis, Rustichello would have reworked notes taken by Marco during his stay in Asia. The economic historian Franco Borlandi assumes the existence of a primitive version of Polo’s report, structured as a trade manual. He remarks that Oriental names and words contained in the Devisement are not transcribed according to the Old French orthographic system, but according to the Italian one. In Borlandi’s opinion, this evidence would demonstrate that Rustichello used an exemplar written in a medieval Italian vernacular for his translation. However, the analysis of Chinese toponyms proves that Marco contributed orally to the composition of the text. Oriental words are written in an orthographic system that reflects Tuscan pronunciation, rather than Venetian. Rustichello adapted to his phonologic system words which he had heard pronounced by Marco.

Col titolo Les aventures des Bruns è indicata una compilazione antico-francese, con sporadici italianismi, che vari elementi suggeriscono di attribuire a Rustichello da Pisa. Il testo si caratterizza per una ricca tradizione, che si fonde talora con quella dell’altra opera cavalleresca di Rustichello, la Compilazione arturiana. Vari manoscritti ciclici si aprono proprio con le Aventures des Bruns, cosicché, per secoli, i lettori del Guiron le Courtois hanno cominciato la lettura proprio da questa soglia. La presente inaugura la serie di edizioni in preparazione a cura del «Gruppo Guiron».

The title "Les aventures des Bruns" indicates an Old French compilation, with sporadic Italianisms, which various elements suggest may be attributable to Rustichello da Pisa. The text is characterised by a rich tradition that sometimes blends with Rustichello’s other chivalric work, the Arthurian Compilation. Various anuscript cycles open, in fact, with Les Aventures des Bruns, to the extent that, for centuries, the readers of Guiron le Courtois began their reading precisely from this material. This publication inaugurates the series of editions in progress edited by the «Gruppo Guiron».

Dalla 'Suite Guiron' (terza branche del ciclo di 'Guiron le courtois') un anonimo compilatore duecentesco - con ogni probabilità operante in ambiente italiano nord-occidentale - ha estratto alcuni racconti a cornice, riorganizzandoli in un florilegio incentrato sulle vicende dei cavalieri appartenenti al lignaggio dei Bruns.
Alcuni manoscritti saldano una parte di questa antologia - che indichiamo come "Compilazione guironiana" - con l'epitome arturiana di Rustichello da Pisa, verso il quale convergono pure elementi stilistici e linguistici.
L'intervento presenta i principali problemi di questo testo di secondo grado ed illustra le linee di ricerca (stemmatiche, linguistiche, stilistiche) presentate in una Tesi di dottorato dedicata all'interfaccia "Guiron"-Rustichello.

Un gruppo di manoscritti del 'Guiron le courtois' contiene una serie di episodi estratti dalla terza branche del ciclo (o 'Suite Guiron'). Questa tradizione compilativa – che si propone d'indicare globalmente come 'Compilazione guironiana' – si caratterizza per la sistematica riscrittura delle descrizioni dei duelli singolari. Dal punto di vista stilistico si rilevano notevoli analogie con la narrazione dei duelli nella 'Compilation' di Rustichello da Pisa, importante florilegio arturiano che alcuni dei codici in questione giustappongono appunto alla 'Compilazione guironiana'.

A group of manuscripts of 'Guiron le courtois' contains a series of episodes drawn from the third branche of the cycle (or 'Suite Guiron'). This compound tradition – for which the title of 'Guiron Compilation' is proposed – is characterised by a systematic rewriting of the descriptions of single combats. From a stylistic point of view, we can notice significant analogies with the narration of jousts in Rusticien de Pise's 'Compilation', an important Arthurian anthology that some of our manuscripts connect to the 'Guiron Compilation'.
